01 / For every HCLTech candidate
The process, start to finish.
HCLTech (HCL Technologies) is an Indian IT services company. Its best-known hiring track is high-volume entry-level hiring in India: campus and off-campus drives for Graduate Engineer Trainee (GET) and Software Engineer roles. This playbook covers that track and adds short notes on experienced lateral hires. HCLTech's official recruitment page lists five steps: Application, Shortlisting, Technical interview, HR Interview, and Offer roll-out.
It says the technical interview "may include puzzle, problems and other out-of-the-box questions", and that the HR interview explores career goals, skills, strengths and passion. For fresh engineering graduates, the official campus hiring page describes a merit-based program called AMP (Ascend, Momentum, Polaris): an Ascend test made of a cognitive test, a coding or technical test and a Versant English test, followed by technical and HR interviews.
Six candidate reports (all GeeksforGeeks, last updated between June 2023 and March 2024) describe an earlier fresher sequence: an online assessment (quant, logical reasoning, verbal, computer fundamentals, sometimes 2 coding questions), sometimes a group discussion, one or two technical interviews driven by the resume, and an HR round heavy on logistics (relocation, night shifts, weekends). Some drives merge the technical and HR rounds into one, and one on-campus drive skipped the technical interview entirely.
Coaching guides say experienced hires may face an added managerial or account round, but none of those candidate reports confirms it. Candidate reports describe 2 to 5 rounds in total, most often 3 (online test, technical interview, HR interview). HCLTech does not publish an interview evaluation framework or scoring rubric, so none is included.
Stage 1: Application (or campus or off-campus drive registration)
varies
Per the official page, you apply through the HCLTech careers section with a resume that lists your credentials and gives detailed experience for the role. Campus and off-campus candidates may instead register for a drive. How long this takes depends on the drive calendar (campus vs off-campus) and the role. For fresh engineering graduates under AMP, the official campus hiring page sets minimum academics of 65% or above throughout Class 10, Class 12 and graduation for Lucknow, Nagpur, Vijayawada and Madurai postings, and 70% or above for other locations, with an engineering degree in any branch. A coaching guide also mentions branch and backlog checks, which the official pages do not state.
Stage 2: Shortlisting (resume screen by recruiter or technical panel)
varies
Per the official page, a recruiter or technical panel screens the application and contacts candidates whose credentials match. Timing varies by route (campus, off-campus, lateral), role and drive. One off-campus candidate reports their resume was shortlisted for the graduate trainee profile before a three-round process. An aggregator describes a recruiter screen by resume review, phone or video on eligibility, skills, location, salary and availability; no candidate report confirms a phone or video screen.
Stage 3: Online assessment (aptitude or cognitive, computer fundamentals, coding)
Official AMP page: about 90 minutes cognitive plus 60 to 90 minutes coding or technical. Older reports and guides: about 60 to 120 minutes in one sitting
Mainly for freshers. The official AMP FAQ says the Ascend test starts with a cognitive test (numerical, verbal, reasoning) and a coding or technical test, and that only candidates who clear both go on to the Versant test. Candidate reports from 2023 to 2024 describe an earlier, single-paper format: 75 questions in 75 minutes with no negative marking in one; sectional timing totalling about 95 minutes in another (quant 15 Qs, logical 15 Qs, verbal 15 Qs, computer fundamentals 30 Qs, 2 coding questions in 20 minutes); and 5 sections of 15 questions in 90 minutes, with a score above 80% needed to be shortlisted, in a third. A 2026 coaching guide lists a separate 45 to 60 minute coding assessment, which differs from the official 60 to 90 minutes. Some drives add basic coding problems (Armstrong number, counting array elements divisible by k). Described as an elimination round.
Format differs between the official AMP page and 2023-24 reports
Stage 4: Versant English test (AMP Ascend test, engineering freshers)
varies
The official AMP FAQ says this test assesses English speaking and listening, that a score of 46 to 56 (B1 level) is required to qualify, and that only candidates who clear the cognitive and coding tests proceed to it. After it, candidates move to the technical and HR interviews. The page gives no duration. None of the candidate reports mention it.
Official campus page only; no candidate report mentions it
Stage 5: Group discussion (some campus drives)
about 10 to 20 minutes
Only some campus and fresher drives include it, and the official campus hiring page does not mention one. Reported lengths differ: 20 minutes in the one on-campus candidate report, 15 to 20 minutes in one guide, 10 to 15 minutes in another. In the on-campus report it came first and decided who sat the aptitude test; the coaching guides list it after the aptitude test, so the order varies. Communication relative to peers was assessed, not who spoke most. One guide reports panels of 8 to 12 candidates.
Some campus drives only; not on the official pages
Stage 6: Second written round
30 minutesGET INFRA profile only
Reported by one on-campus candidate for the GET INFRA profile: 20 MCQs on computer networking, cyber security and Linux/Unix, easy to medium difficulty. In that report, shortlisted students went either to the combined interview round or, for GET INFRA, to this second written round first.
Single source; profile-specific
Stage 7: Technical interview (one or two rounds)
about 10 to 60 minutes per round
Built around the resume: projects, internships, and the languages listed (often Java or C/C++), plus OOP, DBMS/SQL, OS, networks and basic-to-moderate DSA. Some panels set live coding (one candidate had 2 coding tasks in 40 minutes). One on-campus drive held two technical rounds, the second a deep project discussion on tech-stack choices. In that report the author was not asked any DSA questions; the DSA list in it describes what other candidates were asked. Per the official page, the round may include puzzles and out-of-the-box questions. Some drives merge it with HR, and one on-campus drive skipped it entirely.
Stage 8: Managerial or client/account round (experienced roles)
varies
Described only by coaching guides and an aggregator, not by any candidate report. Said to cover delivery experience, production incidents, client communication, shift and on-call work, the account's technologies, and, for senior hires, project architecture and system design. Format and length vary by account and level.
Coaching-guide evidence only
Stage 9: HR interview
about 10 to 45 minutes
Reported lengths range from 15 minutes to about 45 minutes in candidate reports, and 10 to 45 minutes in guides. Covers self-introduction, goals, strengths and weaknesses, why HCLTech, what you know about the company, and logistics: relocation, night shifts, weekend work. Academics were asked about in one drive's combined technical and HR round. Coaching guides add notice period, mainly relevant to experienced hires. In one report the HR interviewer also explained the training period and a service agreement. Per the official page, candidates may question the recruiter about the role and the company.
Stage 10: Offer roll-out
varies
Per the official page, the offer comes with the compensation structure and employment rules. Reported timing uses different starting points and varies by drive: one candidate got a selection email one week after HR; one on-campus process took about two weeks from the first round; one on-campus candidate saw results the day after the final round; one candidate was told of the offer at the end of the HR call; a coaching guide says others waited two to three weeks or more for the offer document; an aggregator cites a Glassdoor average of 17 days for the whole hiring process. For fresh engineering graduates under AMP, the official campus page says everyone who clears selection receives an Ascend offer, the top 10% of Ascend candidates are evaluated further (additional interviews, hackathons or technical tests) and may be upgraded, and candidates from non-Primus colleges or off-campus drives take mandatory pre-joining training and a post-training assessment.
A tag is the condition given in brackets in the stage name.
