01 / For every EPAM candidate

The process, start to finish.

EPAM Systems is a software engineering and IT services firm, best known for hiring software engineers (mostly Java, also .NET and Python) and test automation engineers for client delivery projects. This playbook covers experienced software engineering hires. Campus hiring of Junior Software Engineers in India is a separate track and is noted where it differs, since many public reports come from it.

One third-party guide (hyring.com) that attributes the sequence to EPAM's careers page lists: apply, a conversation with a Talent Acquisition Specialist, an online technical interview plus a hiring-manager interview, an offer, and onboarding. This sequence could not be confirmed on an official EPAM hiring-process page, and guides disagree on where the online test sits. Candidate reports from experienced hires describe two or three interview rounds, and most do not mention the recruiter screen.

Round 1 is coding and core stack, about 1 to 1.5 hours in most reports, with live coding (Java roles lean heavily on the Stream API). Round 2, where reported, covers design, microservices and system design. A final round with a manager covers projects and expectations, and in one senior report it was still technical.

EPAM's own Campus blog (a January 2022 post written for beginners and QA engineers) says the technical interview lasts about an hour and a half on average. It includes practical tasks (predicting code output, writing a code fragment, code review, and test cases for testers) and a roughly 20 minute soft-skills part built around an imaginary troubled project. Campus hiring adds long proctored online tests and a group discussion.

Third-party guides put the whole process at about 2 to 3 weeks, and one cites a Glassdoor average of 23 days. No public interview evaluation framework was found, so none is given here.

Stage 1:

Application and Talent Acquisition (recruiter) screen

varies

A phone or video conversation with a Talent Acquisition Specialist covering role fit, motivation, salary, location and expectations. One coaching guide and EPAM Campus (for EPAM University programs) describe an early English check. The recruiter may ask a few basic technical questions but does not run a full technical interview. No source gives a duration for experienced hires, so length varies by role, region and program as far as reports show. For some EPAM Campus training programs, EPAM says an AI-led interview of about 20 minutes is used and recruiters make the final decision; this is not described for experienced hiring.

Not mentioned in the experienced-hire reports

Stage 2:

Online assessment (proctored coding and MCQ test)

varies; about 1 to 3 hours per test in reports

Aptitude, Java and CS fundamentals MCQs plus 2 to 3 coding problems, on platforms such as Codility, DoSelect or MyAnatomy. Reported lengths differ: about 1.5 to 2 hours in one coaching guide, 2.5 to 3 hours in another guide and some campus reports, and 1 hour in one campus report. Some campus processes split it into an online test and a supervised offline test. Sources disagree on position: one coaching guide places it after the recruiter screen, another places it before the general interview. The two coaching guides list it for all applicants, but candidate reports of it are campus or junior, and none of the senior reports mention it. Experienced-hire reports usually go straight to a live technical interview.

Mostly campus or junior track

Stage 3:

Group discussion

about 10 to 35 minutes

A moderated group discussion on a general topic, used in Indian campus hiring to check communication and English. Reported lengths range from 10 minutes total to about 35 minutes. One off-campus report says it is sometimes skipped. Not reported for experienced hires.

Campus track and one off-campus report only

Stage 4:

Technical interview 1: coding and core stack

about 1 to 1.5 hours in experienced-hire reports; campus reports range from 30 to 70 minutes; one QA automation report says 2 hours

Live coding, sometimes in the candidate's own IDE, plus questions on the main stack (Java core, collections, multithreading, Streams). EPAM Campus describes practical tasks (predict code output, write a code fragment, review code, or write test cases for QA), a technical interview of about an hour and a half on average, and a soft-skills segment of about 20 minutes. One QA automation report describes a 45 minute OOP pre-screen before the 2 hour technical round. Campus candidates are often asked to re-explain their online-test solutions.

Stage 5:

Technical interview 2: design, microservices and system design

about 1 hour in one report

For experienced roles: microservices patterns (Saga, Circuit Breaker, API gateway), Kafka, caching, REST, Spring Boot, plus a high-level design problem. For junior roles this round is reported as a project deep dive. The number of technical rounds varies by level and team (two rounds in one senior report, three in others).

Stage 6:

Hiring manager / managerial round

about 45 minutes

Discussion of past projects, role expectations and fit with delivery and client work. In one senior report this round also included Java 8 coding and HashMap internals, so it can still be technical.

Stage 7:

Offer (and an HR round in campus reports)

HR round about 10 to 30 minutes in campus reports; full process about 2 to 3 weeks

The careers-page sequence reported by hyring.com has no separate HR step; the hiring manager stage leads to the offer. One coaching guide and several campus reports describe an HR round covering motivation, background, relocation and compensation. One guide says candidates who clear the technical interview hear back within 48 hours. Third-party totals range from 2 to 3 weeks to a Glassdoor-cited average of 23 days (21 days for software developer roles). Timing varies by region and track: one 2022 campus account describes five rounds over about three months.

HR round mostly in campus reports

Reported interview time, one scale in minutes

Where the minutes go
