01 / For every RTX candidate
The process, start to finish.
RTX hires through three businesses (Raytheon, Collins Aerospace and Pratt & Whitney). This playbook covers engineering roles (systems, software, test and hardware), the track the company is best known for. RTX's careers site describes the process in general terms: apply, application review by recruiters, interviews (it mentions initial phone screens and reference checks), a background check tailored to the role, then an offer.
It says the time to hear back varies by role and department, and it lists hirevue.com, workday.com, yello.co and nc3.com as official sender domains for communications such as interview requests and job offers. RTX publishes no stage counts or durations.
Third-party guides and candidate reports add detail: a 20 to 30 minute recruiter screen that covers citizenship and clearance eligibility, sometimes a one-way HireVue video, a 45 to 60 minute technical or hiring-manager interview, and a panel with the hiring manager and 2 to 3 engineers. That comes to roughly 2 to 4 interview rounds. Guides report about 2 to 6 weeks to an offer, with averages of about 28 to 29 days.
Cleared Raytheon roles add about 4 to 12 weeks or more for clearance adjudication after the offer. RTX publishes six company values (Safety, Trust, Respect, Accountability, Collaboration, Innovation) with key behaviors and says they drive actions, behaviors and performance. It does not publish them as an interview scoring rubric. Format varies by business unit, site and team. Most question-level evidence comes from prep sites, not first-hand candidate reports.
Stage 1: Online application (Workday via careers.rtx.com)
varies
Apply to a specific requisition. RTX advises customizing your resume to the job and requesting a referral if you have connections at RTX. Check the citizenship and clearance fields on the posting first. CleverPrep reports that postings say the application window is expected to close about 40 days after posting and may be shortened or extended. Time to hear back varies by role and department.
Stage 2: Application review by recruiting team
varies
Per RTX, a submitted application is made available to the recruitment team to review that you meet the basic qualifications, and candidates identified to move on may be invited to interview. For defense roles, ResumeAdapter reports that US citizenship and ITAR eligibility are screened before the resume is reviewed and that the recruiter confirms clearance requirements first. Timing varies by role and department.
Stage 3: Online assessment (one campus report, India)
60 minutes
A single candidate report from an October 2024 Pratt & Whitney graduate engineering trainee campus drive in Bangalore describes a 60-minute, 60-question test (20 each verbal, analytical and numerical) as round 1, followed by an on-campus technical interview and an HR interview. That report mentions no recruiter phone screen and no HireVue. Not reported for US experienced hires.
single source, campus hiring in India only
Stage 4: Recruiter phone screen
20-30 minutes
RTX lists initial phone screens among its hiring stages. Guides report it covers citizenship and clearance status, location, start date, pay expectations, motivation and general fit. NoraHQ gives 15 to 30 minutes for software roles. Ask here how many rounds follow and which steps are in person.
Stage 5: HireVue one-way video interview (not every role)
About 30-60 seconds to prepare and 2-3 minutes to answer each of 4-6 questions; one guide reports a 5-7 day window to complete it
RTX lists hirevue.com among its official sender domains for communications such as interview requests and job offers, but it does not describe the HireVue format. Guides report preset behavioral questions, typically a why-RTX question, a values question and a role scenario, with no live interviewer. OphyAI and ResumeAdapter place it after the recruiter screen. TechPrep instead describes it as recorded before speaking with a recruiter, calls it optional, used for some entry-level or high-volume roles, and says not every candidate gets it.
optional; varies by role
Stage 6: Technical or hiring-manager interview
45-60 minutes
Phone or video (Zoom or Teams), led by the hiring manager or team engineers. Covers engineering fundamentals for the discipline and a deep dive on resume projects. Some software roles include live coding.
Stage 7: Panel interview (virtual or onsite)
60-90 minutes
One guide gives 60 to 90 minutes; others give about 45 to 60. Hiring manager plus 2 to 3 engineers or managers, mixing STAR behavioral questions tied to RTX values with program-specific technical questions. Guides describe it as by video or sometimes in person. One systems engineer guide lists a separate final hiring-manager round of 45 to 60 minutes after the panel.
Stage 8: Reference checks, background check and offer
1-2 weeks
RTX lists reference checks among its stages and says that if you are chosen you undergo a background check tailored to the role, after which it extends an offer and starts onboarding. The 1-2 week figure is from one guide. Guides say cleared roles also require the SF-86 clearance questionnaire; OphyAI places it in this step and ResumeAdapter lists it under offer, clearance and onboarding.
Stage 9: Security clearance adjudication
About 4-12 weeks or longerCleared roles only
Mostly Raytheon defense roles. Guides disagree on how common clearance is at Collins and Pratt & Whitney: one says mostly uncleared unless a role touches a classified program, another says many of their defense roles need it. One guide says offers are often contingent on clearance eligibility, and an interim clearance sometimes shortens the wait.
A tag is the condition given in brackets in the stage name.

Six values published on rtx.com (https://www.rtx.com/en/who-we-are/our-values), each with a one-line definition and key behaviors, for example "Speak up, and support those who do" under Safety. The Collins Aerospace values page on rtx.com also lists the same six names. The RTX careers site (https://careers.rtx.com/global/en/rtx-philippines) says the values drive actions, behaviors and performance. The corporate page says everyone at RTX is responsible for living the values. RTX does not say the values are used in hiring or as an interview scoring rubric.
Third-party guides recommend mapping STAR stories to them. ResumeAdapter's interview-process guide says Safety and Accountability are weighted most heavily, which is that guide's claim, not RTX's; OphyAI and CleverPrep do not make it.
03 / Coach's notes
Coach's tips.
01
Settle your citizenship and clearance facts before the recruiter call. Defense roles screen for these first, and cleared roles can add 4 to 12 weeks or more of adjudication after the offer, so start gathering SF-86 history (residences, employment, foreign contacts) early.
02
Know which business you are interviewing with (Raytheon, Collins Aerospace or Pratt & Whitney) and its products and customers. Name it in your answers, since 'why this business' is the most repeated question and guides say the depth of technical questions differs by business.
03
Prepare a STAR story for each of the six published RTX values. Safety is RTX's first listed value, and one guide advises leading with Safety (speaking up about a concern) and Accountability (owning a mistake or catching one before it reached the customer). That weighting is the guide's advice, not RTX's. Keep classified or export-controlled details out of your answers.
04
Follow RTX's own application advice: customize your resume to the posting and request a referral if you have connections at RTX. Expect a deep dive on every tool and project on your resume, be ready to trace one requirement from specification through verification, and list only tools you can defend under follow-up questions.
05
Ask the recruiter which steps are in person and how many rounds follow. CleverPrep reports that postings say RTX may ask for select in-person interview steps even for on-site, hybrid or remote roles. If you get a HireVue invite, practice timed answers to camera: guides report about 30 to 60 seconds to prepare and 2 to 3 minutes to answer.
06
Check where interview and offer emails come from. RTX says employee emails come from @rtx.com, @collins.com or @prattwhitney.com, that it uses hirevue.com, workday.com, yello.co and nc3.com addresses for communications such as interview requests and job offers, and that it never asks for sensitive personal or financial information via LinkedIn, Teams or other collaboration and social media channels.
