01 / For every Wayfair candidate

The process, start to finish.

Wayfair's careers page lists teams including engineering and technology, fulfillment and home delivery, business and operations, customer service and sales, physical retail, category management and merchandising, and marketing and creative. This playbook covers the software engineering track, which Wayfair documents best in public through an official Wayfair Tech Blog post (Dec 2021).

That post lists the stages in order: recruiter call, technical screen (coding and system design with a Wayfair engineer, or another format such as a case study for some roles), a phone screen on soft skills whose use depends on level, then a four-session onsite or virtual panel. The panel sessions are Coding, App Architecture/Data Modeling, System Design and Team Building/Leadership, and the post pairs each with a People Principle by name.

After the panel come a rubric-based internal review and one or more fit-and-sell calls with the hiring manager. Candidate reports and prep guides last updated between 2024 and 2026 add a timed online assessment early on, described as two to three algorithm problems and sometimes a SQL question (one senior report and one prep guide include SQL; two prep guides name HackerRank; the candidate reports do not name a platform).

Two reports, one from a US intern and one from a fresher whose role location is not stated, describe a debugging round on pre-written buggy code, called Moving Truck or Moving Day. One fresher account ends with a hiring manager round and an HR round. Sources count between 4 and 7 rounds depending on level and role.

Reported total timelines run from about 2 weeks (one entry-level report) to 3 to 5 weeks (one prep guide); Wayfair publishes no total duration. Some candidate accounts do not match the official four-session panel (one US onsite report for an SDET role has cultural fit, object-oriented design, system design and database design rounds and no separate coding session), so the official structure may not apply to every role or team.

Wayfair publishes nine People Principles on its How We Work page, and its recruiting blog tells candidates to research them. The 2021 post pairs panel sessions with three names (We Drive Results, We Are Always Improving, We Win Together) that do not appear on the current list, and the current list does not name the interview rubric. Treat the principles as published values rather than a confirmed scoring rubric.

Stage 1:

Recruiter call

15-30 minutes

Officially an overview of Wayfair's business and Technology team, a review of open roles and a chance to say what you are looking for. Prep guides add background, interest in Wayfair, location and salary expectations. No code. Wayfair publishes no duration; the range comes from two prep guides (TechPrep 15-30 minutes, CleverPrep 30 minutes).

Stage 2:

Online assessment

45-90 minutes

Timed online coding test reported as two to three algorithm and data structure problems. A senior report and CleverPrep add one SQL question; the senior report describes computations, joins and nested queries across three tables. Reported lengths: 45 minutes (fresher report), 60-90 minutes (TechPrep), 90 minutes (CleverPrep). Difficulty is reported differently: two medium problems plus SQL (senior report), medium and hard plus SQL (CleverPrep). The two prep guides name HackerRank; the candidate reports do not name the platform. A fresher reported waiting about 20 days for a response afterwards.

Not part of the official 2021 process description; reported by candidates and prep guides last updated between 2024 and 2026

Stage 3:

Technical screen

40-60 minutes

Officially an assessment by a Wayfair engineer covering coding and system design, or another format such as a case study for some roles. Candidates describe live coding with follow-ups and test cases, SQL questions on joins and aggregation, or a debugging task on pre-written buggy code (1 hour in the fresher report). Wayfair publishes no duration; the range comes from TechPrep (40-60 minutes), CleverPrep (60 minutes) and the fresher report (1 hour). One prep guide (Interview Kickstart) says this screen runs on Karat; the official post does not name a platform.

Stage 4:

Phone screen

varies
Depends on level

Covers soft skills and your ability to drive impactful solutions, including technical questions about past work and why you made key decisions. STAR structure recommended. The official post says this screen depends on level; no duration is published.

Stage 5:

Panel session: Coding

45-60 minutes

Officially titled Coding and We Drive Results. In a HackerRank playground, in the language you are most comfortable with. Rubric criteria: Style, Comprehension, Speed, Testing and Communication. Wayfair publishes no duration; 45-60 minutes comes from one prep guide (CleverPrep). One senior-level report describes a separate 1:1 algorithms interview with one easy and one medium problem and test cases expected; it is not labeled as part of the panel.

Stage 6:

Panel session: App Architecture / Data Modeling (low-level design)

45 minutes

Officially titled App Architecture/Data Modeling and We Are Always Improving, with 45 minutes stated. A deep dive into two of three areas: API design (inputs and outputs), class design (encapsulation, inheritance versus composition) and data schema (tables, columns, relationships, keys). Candidates report a parking garage or parking lot problem and a Netflix/IMDb-style schema.

Stage 7:

Panel session: System Design

45-60 minutes

Officially titled System Design and We Drive Results. Design the high-level physical architecture of a full-stack system: requirements gathering, component design, protocols and networking, capacity and scaling, operational support. Done in HackerRank for video interviews, or on a whiteboard in the office. Wayfair publishes no duration; 45-60 minutes comes from one prep guide (CleverPrep) that combines system design and low-level design and says it is mainly for senior candidates.

Stage 8:

Panel session: Team Building / Leadership (behavioral)

45-60 minutes

Officially titled Team Building/Leadership and We Win Together. A two-way conversation about a significant project, a difficult working relationship and a time you compromised on a technical decision. Management candidates also discuss developing engineers and handling underperformance. The official post lists topics here, not rubric criteria, and gives no duration; 45-60 minutes comes from one prep guide (CleverPrep). The official blog gives 5-10 minutes for your own questions at the end of every panel session.

Stage 9:

Hiring manager (techno-managerial) and HR rounds

30-45 minutes each

A managerial round on teamwork, conflict, past projects and technical decisions (45 minutes in the fresher report), then an HR round on why Wayfair, strengths and weaknesses, career goals, salary and relocation (30 minutes, fresher report only). A senior report mentions a last techno-manager round, sort of a fitment round, but gives no topics. CleverPrep lists a 30-45 minute hiring manager or team fit round about team structure and no HR round.

Not in the official 2021 description. The HR round appears in only one fresher account (role location not stated)

Stage 10:

Internal review

a few days

Interviewers submit rubric-based feedback, the recruiter collects it, and the panel decides on an offer. The official blog says to expect to hear back within a few days of the onsite.

Stage 11:

Fit and sell call(s)

varies

After offer details are shared, one or more calls with the hiring manager to confirm mutual fit. The official post gives no duration and says only that there may be one or more sessions, so the number of calls is not fixed.

A tag is the condition given in brackets in the stage name.

These nine names, in this order, are copied from Wayfair's official How We Work page (https://www.aboutwayfair.com/how-we-work), which lists exactly nine. The page says the principles are anchored on three elements (Great People, Great Ideas, Great Ambition) but does not assign principles to them. The page does not say the principles are used to assess candidates; it does link to a policy on AI use in the interviewing process. Wayfair's recruiting blog tells candidates to research the People Principles before interviewing.

The Dec 2021 official Tech Blog post says each panel session is aligned with a People Principle, but it uses the names "We Drive Results", "We Are Always Improving" and "We Win Together", which do not appear on the current list. Whether those were earlier names could not be confirmed. The same post publishes rubric criteria for three sessions. Coding: Style, Comprehension, Speed, Testing, Communication. App Architecture/Data Modeling: API design, class design, data schema.

System Design: requirements gathering, component design, protocols and networking, capacity and scaling, operational support. The Team Building/Leadership session lists topics but no criteria. Treat the current principles as published values, not a confirmed scoring rubric. The principle tags on the questions below are inferred from each principle's description on the How We Work page, not from any Wayfair statement, and appear only where the question wording closely matches that description.

Roles are grouped by the category each question fits, not by the source. Switching roles is part of Interview Prep, included with Career. The counts show what each role holds in the full set.

  1. Sample question, Coding and Debugging

Given an array of weights and a target weight, find whether the array contains two values that sum to the target weight. Follow-ups: what other ways can you solve it, write test cases for your logic, and how would you handle input that is too large.

Hash set or two-pointer pair-sum lookup, plus test-case design and large-input handling.

  2. Sample question, SQL and Low-Level Design

Answer 5-7 SQL questions on sample data the interviewer provides, using different types of JOINs, GROUP BY and HAVING.

SQL joins of different types, plus GROUP BY and HAVING on interviewer-supplied sample data.

  3. Sample question, Behavioral and Team Building

Tell me about a time you developed a scrappy solution to a problem under constraints.
