01 / For every Booking Holdings candidate

The process, start to finish.

Booking Holdings owns several brands (Booking.com, Priceline, Agoda, KAYAK, OpenTable and others). This playbook covers the track the group is best known for: software engineering at Booking.com, mostly in Amsterdam, where the candidate reports cited here are based. None of the sources here describes how the other brands hire.

Booking.com's official "How we hire" page lists four stages: Application, Interview (a first call with sourcers or recruiters), Business (rounds with the future manager, teammates and colleagues, which may cover technical expertise) and Feedback. The Booking Holdings careers page describes the same four steps for the group.

Booking.com's page says the process can take 3 to 6 weeks depending on the complexity of the interviews each role requires, that some technical roles have technical tests and coding interviews, and that candidates should hear back from their recruiter within a week of their interview. Both official pages say the number of rounds depends on department and seniority. Neither mentions HackerRank or names rounds beyond those four stages.

Candidate reports and prep guides describe the engineering version in more detail, and they disagree in places. These write-ups all start with a timed HackerRank online assessment, then a recruiter call of about 30 to 45 minutes, sometimes a hiring manager chat, and then roughly three virtual rounds: coding, system design and a cultural fit interview. One first-hand SDE-2 Amsterdam report, posted in July 2025, lists an online assessment, a recruiter screen and three virtual rounds before the offer.

One aggregator (4dayweek) says the algorithms and system design rounds are held with two engineers. System design prompts tend to come from Booking's own business, such as fraud checks on pay-later bookings, hotel availability and a centralized logging system. The same hiring page lists five company values under the heading "Our values".

The page does not say interviewers score candidates against them, but the cultural fit round is described by candidates as behavioral, and one prep guide says the values are tested there. Glassdoor and LeetCode Discuss, where most first-hand reports sit, are not among the sources here, so the evidence base is thin.

Stage 1:

Application and CV review

varies

Official page (stage named Application): it says Booking.com relies on AI to analyse your CV and enrich it with market data, and recruiters review applications and discuss motivation later. No duration is given. The SDE-2 report says the online assessment link arrived the day after applying. Timing varies: the official page says the whole process depends on the complexity of the interviews each role requires, and the Booking Holdings careers page says the number of rounds depends on department and seniority.

Stage 2:

Online assessment (HackerRank)

75 to 150 minutes

Reports disagree on the length: 90 minutes with three problems (SDE-2 Amsterdam report), 75 minutes with 5 challenges, or 4 per some candidates (4dayweek), 75 to 90 minutes (CleverPrep, which says no time limit is published so its figure is unverified) and 90 to 150 minutes of machine coding with hidden tests (TechPrep). The format ranges from algorithm problems to building a small module or REST API. The official page does not mention HackerRank; it says only that some technical roles have technical tests and coding interviews.

Stage 3:

Recruiter screen

30 to 45 minutes

Official stage name: Interview. The official page says the first call is with sourcers or recruiters and covers experience, expectations and motivation, plus an introduction to the company, its culture and the team. It gives no duration. The SDE-2 report and TechPrep say 30 minutes; CleverPrep says 30 to 45. The SDE-2 report lists experience, expectations, current compensation and other ongoing interview processes; TechPrep adds high-traffic systems, microservices and Agile experience.

Stage 4:

Hiring manager chat

30 to 45 minutes

Not always included. TechPrep describes it as conversational, covering your background and role fit, and places it before the virtual onsite. CleverPrep instead lists a 45-minute hiring manager interview after the cultural fit round, so its place in the sequence is disputed. The SDE-2 report has no such round.

optional

Stage 5:

Coding interview

60 minutes

In the SDE-2 report, the candidate processed JSON payment and booking logs into a report, then got follow-up scenarios and questions on complexity. 4dayweek describes an algorithms round with two engineers, solved on paper. TechPrep puts virtual onsite rounds at 60 to 90 minutes each. CleverPrep also lists a separate 60-minute technical phone screen before the onsite loop, which the SDE-2 report does not have. No public source confirms a pair programming or take-home format.

Stage 6:

System design interview

60 to 90 minutes

The SDE-2 report says 90 minutes; TechPrep puts virtual onsite rounds at 60 to 90 minutes each. 4dayweek describes this round as held with two engineers. Prompts are usually drawn from the Booking domain (fraud, availability, logging).

Stage 7:

Cultural fit interview

45 to 60 minutes

60 minutes in the SDE-2 report, and 45 to 60 minutes per CleverPrep. The SDE-2 report says behavioral topics covered conflict, leading initiatives, delivering under pressure, teamwork and feedback, compared the style to Amazon's Leadership Principles interviews and found follow-ups light. TechPrep says candidates report 35 or more questions, including follow-ups.

Stage 8:

Senior or principal engineer round

varies

Only 4dayweek reports this: a final meeting with a senior team member or principal engineer, where the candidate shares the business impact of their work. 4dayweek says the number of onsite rounds (2 to 4) depends on the position. No duration is stated.

single-source

Stage 9:

Feedback and decision

about 1 week

Official page (stage named Feedback): the recruiter collects interviewer feedback and candidates should usually hear back within about a week of the interview. The official total for the whole process is 3 to 6 weeks. 4dayweek reports 2 to 4 weeks.

02 / What Booking Holdings scores

Booking.com values

  1. 01

    Think customer first

  2. 02

    Succeed together

  3. 03

    Own it

  4. 04

    Learn forever

  5. 05

    Do the right thing

These five values are listed under the heading "Our values" on Booking.com's official How we hire page, in this order. The same five names appear on the careers site's Our impact page under the heading "It starts with our values". Neither page says interviewers score candidates against them or ties them to interviews. CleverPrep says the cultural fit round is where the values are tested, but the company has not confirmed this.

DesignGurus names a different set of themes (customer focus, learning and growth, humility, ownership, data-driven decisions) that does not match the official list, so only the five official names are used. Paraphrasing the How we hire page: adding value for customers, meaning guests, partners and colleagues (Think customer first); team success, trust and diverse perspectives (Succeed together); delivering on promises, informed decisions and prioritising (Own it); resilience, reflection and learning from failures (Learn forever); right results the right way (Do the right thing). Booking.com does not publish a scoring rubric.

03 / Coach's notes

Coach's tips.

  1. 01

Explain your reasoning out loud in technical assessments and interviews. Booking.com's own hiring page says a technical assessment is just as much a communication exercise, so interviewers want to see how you think through each step.

  2. 02

Treat the HackerRank assessment as a test of efficiency, not just correctness. TechPrep says hidden tests are used and passing the visible cases is not enough. Practice data-processing and ranking problems such as Award Top K Hotels, plus interval problems based on hotel bookings.

  3. 03

TechPrep reports that the machine-coding version of the assessment may expect Java, often Spring Boot, even when the posting is language agnostic. Check the language and environment before you start the test.

  4. 04

In the coding round, ask clarifying questions before you write code, and expect follow-up scenarios plus questions on runtime complexity and optimization. The SDE-2 candidate says they asked clarifying questions about what the report should include.

  5. 05

For system design, prepare travel-domain problems: pay-later fraud checks, hotel availability, search at scale and centralized logging. The SDE-2 author says high-level distributed systems reasoning, scalability, fault tolerance and confirming assumptions mattered more than implementation detail, and TechPrep suggests raising experimentation and observability.

  6. 06

Prepare many STAR stories for the cultural fit round, since TechPrep says candidates report 35 or more questions including follow-ups and suggests 10 to 15 distinct stories, while the SDE-2 author found follow-ups light. The five published values (Think customer first, Succeed together, Own it, Learn forever, Do the right thing) are a reasonable lens for choosing stories, but Booking.com does not say it scores against them. The SDE-2 author suggests stressing ownership and collaboration.

  7. 07

Treat the business interviews as two-way. The official page describes them as a two-way dialogue and says to have questions ready for the teams. Expect the recruiter screen to ask about your expectations, your current compensation and any other processes you are in.
