01 / For every Warner Bros. Discovery candidate
The process, start to finish.
Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) is best known as a media and entertainment company, but public interview detail is thickest for software engineering and for intern and early-career programs, so this playbook covers the software engineering track first, with notes on business and creative roles where sources exist. WBD hires across technology, games, news (CNN) and other business and creative teams.
Important context: the acquisition of WBD by Paramount Skydance closed on October 6, 2026, and the combined company operates as Skydance (company press release filed with the SEC, corroborated by a news report). The old wbd.com guiding-principles URL now redirects to a Skydance values page, so expect recruiters, portals and culture material to shift during integration. WBD's own careers pages describe only the intern and early-career process.
For tech interns the steps are a recorded behavioral HireVue interview, a timed 20-question multiple-choice assessment for software engineering candidates, a recruiter phone screen and final-round Zoom interviews, with offers by the end of December. The careers site also says the first WBD interview will be virtual.
For experienced engineers the best detail is one first-hand report (senior full-stack role in the CNN division, reported Nov 2025): an HR screen, a live coding screen with two senior developers, then a final loop of about three hours with system design, a behavioral round with the hiring manager and another live coding round.
Prep sites describe a similar mix, one general software engineer guide lists HireVue as the first step, and round order and count vary by team, level and region. Overall length is reported as 3 to 5 weeks by one prep guide for software engineers, over a month in the senior report, and from mid-September to December for the tech intern cycle. WBD does not publish an interview evaluation rubric.
Its former Guiding Principles were company values rather than a published hiring framework, their official page now redirects to Skydance's four values, and so no evaluation framework is listed here. Most evidence comes from prep sites and one detailed candidate report. Glassdoor reports are not included.
Stage 1: Online application
varies
Apply through careers.wbd.com. One aggregator says WBD runs hiring on Workday; no official WBD page confirms that. Most roles need only a resume (one guide says DC Comics is the exception and wants one PDF with resume and cover letter). One intern post says large corporate internships often use a general pool with a recruiter assigning the department, and describes being moved forward in a communications intern pool after applying in October. Timing depends on program and region. WBD's US intern page lists application windows of May to June for the fall program, September to October for spring and January to February for summer, and the tech early-talent page lists mid-September to the end of October. Other locations have no set timeframe.
Stage 2: HireVue online assessment (documented for intern and early-career programs; reported for some software engineer roles)
Software engineering intern candidates: 20 multiple-choice questions in 30 minutes (WBD). Length of the recorded behavioral interview is not stated.
WBD describes a recorded behavioral HireVue interview for tech interns, followed immediately by the timed multiple-choice assessment for software engineering candidates. Third-party guides add detail: about 5 pre-recorded behavioral questions, and multiple-choice topics of data structures, algorithms, OOP, DBMS, operating systems and schemas. One intern described a timed one-way video interview and prepared a one to two minute pitch; no per-answer limit is stated. Non-tech intern tracks reportedly use a behavioral-only HireVue with no multiple-choice section. UK and Ireland programs use a written HireVue assessment and, for placements, a pre-recorded video assessment (December and January on WBD's page). A 2022 graduate internship listing (appears to be UK) used a written HireVue questionnaire due one week after the CV deadline. One guide repeats an unconfirmed community claim that answers are scored mainly by matching transcript content to the job description; the guide says WBD has not confirmed it. The tech intern page labels its roles Summer 2026, so check current dates.
The one first-hand experienced-hire report started at the HR screen. A general software engineer prep guide lists HireVue first without a seniority limit, so whether experienced hires get this step varies.
Stage 3: Recruiter or HR screen
varies
Reported topics: background, why you are job searching, motivation and role fit, and logistics such as start date, notice period, work authorization, location and hybrid expectations, on-call and compensation. One senior engineer said the HR screen also included a few technical questions. For tech interns, WBD lists a recruiter phone screen after the HireVue step. Length is not stated in any source and likely varies by recruiter, level and region. Start date, work authorization and on-call come from PracHub; the Hyring page lists notice period, location, expected compensation and motivation, and is a generic guide that says WBD has no single fixed process.
Stage 4: Technical screen (live coding)
varies
One senior candidate did live coding with two senior developers on an array-shift problem. JobMentis describes a coding screen of LeetCode-medium style problems under time pressure. Intern guides describe a Zoom interview with two interviewers covering coding and system design, followed by a managerial follow-up that digs into earlier answers and personal projects; WBD itself says tech intern final-round Zoom interviews are with technologists from the business and members of the hiring team. A truncated preview of one developer review (France, Nov 2024) mentions a coding skills test, phone screens and in-depth rounds on algorithms and system design. Format varies by team and level.
Stage 5: Final loop: system design, behavioral with hiring manager, live coding
about 3 hours total (three back-to-back rounds) in one senior report
The reported senior loop (senior full-stack role, CNN division) had a system design round (an ad content delivery system with A/B testing), a behavioral round for which HR sent a core-values booklet in advance, and a live coding round (keyword search in a CSV). The candidate was rejected after the system design round ran long. Other guides describe a similar mix but not the same order: PracHub lists system design, coding, operational excellence (including debugging and refactoring a provided codebase) and behavioral questions, and JobMentis lists system design, an onsite coding round with debugging prompts, then a behavioral and leadership round last.
Round order and count differ between sources, and only one first-hand loop is publicly reported.
Stage 6: People and Culture or cultural assessment round
varies
An intern guide describes a People and Culture round on values alignment and team fit for the tech track, and one truncated candidate preview (software developer, France, Nov 2024) mentions a culture-fit assessment. WBD's own tech intern page does not list this round. It is not clear whether experienced hires get this as a separate round. It may be folded into the hiring manager behavioral round.
Stage 7: HR discussion and offer
3 to 5 weeks for software engineers (one prep guide); over a month in the one senior report; mid-September to end of December for the tech intern cycle (WBD); about 6 weeks, February to April, for non-tech intern cycles (one guide)
One generic aggregator guide says final stages can cover compensation, joining date, documents, background checks and written offer terms. Tech intern offers are finalized by the end of December per WBD. The non-tech intern path in one guide is a behavioral-only HireVue then one or two Zoom interviews with the hiring manager (2 to 3 stages), with offers March to April. One intern got an in-person interview a few months after her video submission. WBD says application volume prevents individual status updates for its intern programs.

03 / Coach's notes
Coach's tips.
01
Ask about the merger up front. The acquisition of WBD by Paramount Skydance closed on October 6, 2026, and the combined company operates as Skydance. Ask your recruiter which entity is hiring, whether the team's scope or reporting line is changing, and whether the loop format described here still applies. As of October 2026, the careers.wbd.com landing page did not mention the merger.
02
In the system design round, manage your own clock. The one detailed senior report describes a rejection after the ad delivery and A/B testing design ran long and never reached the deep dive. Agree on scope early, sketch the high-level design quickly, and leave time for depth.
03
Ask HR for any values or culture material before the behavioral round. One candidate received a core-values booklet to prepare from. The old WBD Guiding Principles page now redirects to Skydance's four values (Aim High and Deliver With Excellence, Champion the Best Ideas, Earn Trust Every Day, Win Together). Bring stories that fit whichever set your recruiter points to, without treating either as a published scoring rubric.
04
For HireVue, rehearse timed answers. WBD says software engineering intern candidates take a 20-question multiple-choice assessment in 30 minutes right after the recorded behavioral interview. Third-party guides say about 5 recorded behavioral questions and quiz topics of data structures, algorithms, OOP, DBMS and operating systems. One guide passes on an unconfirmed community claim that answers are matched against the job description by transcript, so give specific, on-topic answers rather than trying to game it.
05
Prepare engineering stories at scale. Prep sites repeatedly bring up rate limiters, caching, outage root-cause analysis, intermittent 503s under peak load and high-volume event ingestion. These are third-party prompts, and the one first-hand senior report was for a JavaScript full-stack role in the CNN division, so ask the recruiter what the team's stack and domain are.
06
WBD's careers site says your first interview will be virtual. Test your camera and audio, and keep notes nearby without reading from them.
07
Expect slow or thin communication. WBD's intern page says it cannot accommodate status update requests because of application volume, and intern cycles run from about 6 weeks (non-tech, one guide) to mid-September through December (tech). One intern advised an emailed thank-you note after interviews. For non-intern roles, ask your recruiter at each stage when to expect the next step instead of reading silence as a rejection.
