01 / For every Unilever candidate
The process, start to finish.
This playbook covers early-careers hiring, mainly the Unilever Future Leaders Programme (UFLP, the graduate management trainee scheme) and the UK industrial placements. These are the routes with the most public documentation. Experienced-hire processes are not covered. Unilever's UK UFLP page lists four steps: an online application, a profile assessment (a portrait personality test plus an online assessment), a self-recorded digital interview of three short questions followed by a business case, and a face-to-face Discovery Centre day.
The Netherlands page also lists four steps (online application, a digital assessment covering motivation, personality and cognitive tests, a digital interview about motivation and experience, and an in-person Discovery Centre at the Rotterdam office) and describes the UFLP selection as resume-free. The UK UFLP page says the Discovery Centre includes project meetings, business challenges, a team meeting with Unilever colleagues and an interview; the Netherlands page gives no activity list.
In the Netherlands, candidates learn at the end of the Discovery Centre day whether they have an offer. The official UK industrial placement page lists five steps: an application plus an interactive simulation with situational judgement questions, numerical and verbal reasoning tests, a video interview, a virtual half-day Discovery Centre and an invitation-only in-person half-day. The functions on offer differ by country (the UK page lists seven, the Netherlands page six).
The UK UFLP page says applications open once a year, around Q4, and run on a rolling basis, with a role closing once enough applications arrive; the Netherlands page says selection is first-come, first-served. The UK UFLP page and a UK placement listing say a real person reviews each digital interview and that AI is not used as a screening tool; the official UK placements page is silent on this, and several prep sites claim AI scoring instead.
Unilever's pages give no stage durations, so every timing here comes from prep sites and those sources conflict. No official, complete evaluation framework is publicly available. Prep sites refer to Standards of Leadership, but their lists differ, so no framework is included here. Question examples come from prep sites and guides, not first-hand candidate reports, and many are single-source or worded differently across sites. Glassdoor reports are not included.
Stage 1: Online application
20-30 minutes to complete (one prep site); the Netherlands page says completing all online stages may take a few days; review time varies
Online form, which can be pre-filled from LinkedIn (UK page). Candidates apply to one function only, and the UK page says only the first application is considered. The functions on offer differ by country: the UK UFLP page lists seven, the Netherlands page lists six. The Netherlands form asks about motivation for choosing Unilever and the chosen programme, and that page describes the UFLP selection process as resume-free. For UK industrial placements, the official page puts an interactive simulation in this same first step.
Stage 2: Profile / online assessment
varies; prep sites cite about 20-25 minutes for the game-based version
The UK UFLP page names a portrait personality test and an online assessment covering cognitive, emotional and social traits, with personalised feedback after each stage. The Netherlands page names motivation, personality and cognitive assessments. UK industrial placements use numerical and verbal reasoning tests after the application and simulation step; the higherin placement listing instead describes a personality, motivation and cognitive ability assessment. Guides describe 5 games (quarterdeck) or 12 games (opportunitydesk, careertestprep), and some prep sites name Pymetrics or HireVue games. The format varies by country, programme and year.
Stage 3: Digital interview (self-recorded)
varies; prep sites cite roughly 30 seconds to prepare and up to 2-3 minutes per answer, longer for the business case
UK UFLP page: three short questions followed by a business case that asks candidates to solve real-world problems using Unilever scenarios, recorded anytime and anywhere. The official UK placement page says only 'video interview'. The Netherlands page describes a set of questions about motivation and experience and mentions no business case. Prep-site details conflict: one says 90 seconds prep for the questions and 3-4 minutes prep for the case, and another describes eight questions with 30 seconds of think time and 2.5 minutes to answer, which does not match the official three questions plus a business case.
Unilever's UK UFLP page and a UK placement listing state that a real person reviews the submission and AI is not used as a screening tool. theinterviewguys, cleverprep and one careertestprep page claim AI scoring, while another careertestprep page says human judgment plays a significant role. Trust the official statement.
Stage 4: Discovery Centre
one face-to-face day (UK UFLP page); two half-days for UK placements, virtual then in person; in person at the Rotterdam office in the Netherlands; prep sites cite about 3-4 hours for a half-day virtual version
A 'day in the life' format: project meetings, business challenges, a team meeting with Unilever colleagues and an interview (UK UFLP page). The UK placement page adds immersive business challenges and interviews in the virtual half-day, and an office visit, interviews with business leaders and function-related challenges in the in-person half-day. Third-party guides describe an individual written or presented case, a group exercise with a presentation, and a one-to-one interview with a line manager. Some prep sites (quarterdeck, careertestprep, cleverprep) describe a virtual or part-virtual UFLP Discovery Centre, which differs from the UK UFLP page's face-to-face day. The format varies by country and programme.
Stage 5: Offer decision
Netherlands: by the end of the Discovery Centre day. Overall process length is not stated by Unilever; one prep site page says 6-10 weeks from application to offer, another page of the same site applies 6-10 weeks to application close to Discovery Centre, and a third site relays a Glassdoor figure of about 59 days average time to hire
This is an outcome, not a separate step on the official UK pages, which end at the Discovery Centre and say nothing about offer timing. The Netherlands page says candidates know at the end of the Discovery Centre day whether they have an offer. The 59-day figure comes from one site with no stated start or end point and has not been confirmed against Glassdoor's own data. Time from application to offer depends on when the candidate applies in the rolling window and on the country's Discovery Centre dates.

03 / Coach's notes
Coach's tips.
01
Do not tune your digital interview for an algorithm. Unilever's UK UFLP page says a real person reviews each digital interview submission and AI is not used as a screening tool, despite prep-site claims of AI scoring. Expect three short questions followed by a business case that asks you to solve real-world problems using Unilever scenarios, and prepare STAR-style examples as cleverprep advises.
02
Apply early and choose your function deliberately. The UK UFLP page says applications are processed on a rolling basis and roles close once enough applications arrive, and that only your first application will be considered. The Netherlands page says selection is first-come, first-served.
03
Prepare brand-specific answers rather than talking about Unilever in the abstract. Prep sites report questions on which Unilever brand you are most passionate about and how you would grow it, and on Unilever's sustainability commitments; cleverprep advises knowing the brands in depth, including strategy, competitive positioning and campaigns you admire. Check the current portfolio first: the ice cream business was demerged in December 2025 (foodmanufacture), so older material may be out of date.
04
For the Discovery Centre, practiceaptitudetests advises inviting every group member to contribute and keeping to the time limit in the group exercise. In the individual written case, some documents may be irrelevant, so work out which are useful; that guide says assessors look at how you prioritise information and at the structure and quality of your writing.
05
Prepare a separate past example for each common competency theme (leadership, influence without authority, data-driven decisions, failure and learning, prioritisation, working across cultures). careertestprep lists Discovery Centre follow-ups that ask what you would do differently and how you know the result came from your own actions, so be ready to be probed on each example.
