HOW TO READ THIS PLAYBOOK

Independent: SupaCV is not affiliated with or endorsed by Costco. This is one well-documented shape of Costco's interviews, not a script: processes change and vary by role, team, level, and region, so confirm specifics with your recruiter.

01 / For every Costco candidate

The process, start to finish.

This playbook covers Costco's warehouse hourly track (cashier, front end, stocker, member service, food court, with notes on supervisor, manager and pharmacy). That is the track Costco is best known for. Costco's Resources for Applying page says most candidates are hired for part-time, entry-level jobs such as front end assistant, food court, member service and merchandise stocking, and that Costco selects on transferable skills, prior experience and member service skills.

One guide says supervisory roles are usually filled from inside first. Corporate and IT hiring is a separate track that this playbook does not cover; the only source on it is one software engineer guide, which is kept out of the timeline. Costco says it fills most merchandising and other corporate roles by recruiting its own employees. Hiring is location based: you apply online to a specific warehouse.

One guide says the application includes a questionnaire on handling workplace situations, and Costco says some positions may require a skills demonstration or a business-related test. If a manager is interested, a phone or scheduling call follows. Guides describe between one and three interviews, with two the most common figure: a first and longest one with a hiring or department manager, then one or two with higher-level managers. Some locations hold group interviews.

Guides disagree on the order of the pre-employment steps: a background check, eligibility verification (Costco says it participates in E-Verify) and, at some locations, a drug test, then orientation. Third-party estimates for the whole process range from about 2-3 weeks to a month, and from one week to three months depending on location, role and season. Questions are mostly behavioral and situational: member service, teamwork, reliability, honesty and availability.

Costco publishes a mission statement and a five-item Code of Ethics (Obey the law, Take care of our members, Take care of our employees, Respect our suppliers, Reward our shareholders). It also publishes four values headed "Do the right thing", "Respect our Differences", "Contribute to our Communities" and "Care for the Environment". No official Costco page says these are used to evaluate candidates, so no evaluation framework is recorded here.

One front-end supervisor candidate report (Issaquah, WA, 2023) says the candidate was asked to recite the Code of Ethics and mission statement. Costco has no official page describing the interview stages, and Glassdoor and Indeed are not among the sources. Most of the detail below therefore comes from coaching sites and a few candidate accounts.

Stage 1:

Online application to a specific warehouse

varies

You apply through the Costco careers site to a chosen location and role, with work history and availability. Costco's Resources for Applying page says online applications expire after 90 days, that locations hire throughout the year, and that you may be required to demonstrate skills or pass a business-related test for some positions. It also suggests introducing yourself to a manager at your desired location. One guide adds a questionnaire on handling workplace situations. Costco's FAQ says application updates are not sent by email or messaging apps and tells applicants to contact the location. How long it takes to hear back varies by location and season. One guide names September to November as the largest hiring wave, but Costco itself says locations hire throughout the year, not only during seasonal periods.

Stage 2:

Phone screen or scheduling call

10-15 minutes

A manager or recruiter contacts you, by phone or sometimes email, to set up the interview and confirm availability and interest. One guide says the call also covers schedule flexibility and basic work history and runs 10-15 minutes; that figure appears in no other source. Others describe this step only as an initial screening or a scheduling call, and one guide describes the recruiter screening as a review of applications, so not every report includes a call.

Stage 3:

First interview with hiring or department manager

varies

Usually the longest interview, with a hiring manager, supervisor or department lead. It covers member service, teamwork and handling stress. Interview length varies by guide: one coaching site gives an average Costco interview of about 45 minutes with roughly 20 questions, without saying it is the first interview or citing a source, and another generic guide gives 20 to 30 minutes for a first round. One guide says a saliva drug swab may be done during the interview.

Stage 4:

Group interview (some locations)

varies

Some warehouses use group interviews instead of, or alongside, one-on-one interviews. Guides do not agree on where it falls: one lists it before the first manager interview, and a 2016 first-person account by a former front-end associate at the East Harlem, New York store describes it as the main interview, which took a full afternoon, and says she had accepted the position by the end of it. Whether it happens depends on the warehouse and the role.

Not universal; depends on the warehouse

Stage 5:

Second (and sometimes third) interview with higher-level managers

varies

Guides describe one to three interviews in total, with two the most common figure. One guide says the second interview is with higher-level managers judging long-term commitment, consistency and fit. Older supervisor candidate previews say two managers or other superiors interview the candidate and that 2-3 interviews are likely; a January 2023 supervisor preview describes a single interview of 5-7 questions. No public source says who conducts a third interview. The count varies by role and location.

Stage 6:

Background check, drug test and offer

1-3 weeks from interview to final offer

Guides disagree on the order and on whether a drug test is used. One guide says the drug test and background check come before a final offer. Another puts a saliva swab during the interview, a third-party background check after a conditional offer and a urine test at orientation. Another says drug screening applies at only some locations and a background check comes before any final offer, and another says offers are conditional on background and eligibility-to-work checks. Costco says it participates in E-Verify nationwide. The 1-3 week figure (interview to offer, including checks) comes from a single guide; another says the whole process takes about 2-3 weeks. One guide says anyone who refuses or fails the drug test must wait a year to reapply; another says failing it disqualifies you.

Stage 7:

Orientation and onboarding

varies

New hires receive orientation, training and a work schedule. One guide says orientation covers policies, safety and role expectations. Costco publishes no length and none of the guides cited here gives a supported figure, so it varies by location and role.

03 / Coach's notes

Coach's tips.

  1. 01

Know your real availability before the interview and state it plainly. Costco's Resources for Applying page tells applicants to be ready for busy hours, typically nights and weekends, with merchandise stocking in the early morning. Guides say flexibility matters, and one warns against promising hours you cannot keep.

  2. 02

One guide suggests calling customers 'members'. Know the basics of the membership model, the mission statement and the five-item Code of Ethics on costco.com. One front-end supervisor candidate reports being asked to recite the Code of Ethics and mission statement.

  3. 03

Prepare about six specific stories. One guide suggests covering customer service, teamwork, pressure, mistakes, initiative and reliability. Most questions are situational, and honesty scenarios such as a coworker stealing appear in more than one guide.

  4. 04

Apply to a specific warehouse. One guide says you can apply to several locations at once, which helps if you are flexible on where you work. Costco says online applications expire after 90 days, so apply again if you hear nothing. Costco also suggests introducing yourself to a manager at your desired location, and one guide suggests a weekday morning. Costco's FAQ says application updates are not sent by email or messaging apps, so contact the location directly.

  5. 05

Be open to whichever entry-level job has the opening. Costco says most candidates are hired for part-time, entry-level jobs such as front end assistant, food court, member service and merchandise stocking, and that it selects on transferable skills, prior experience and member service skills. One guide says supervisory roles are usually filled from inside first.

  6. 06

Guides report a background check and eligibility verification (Costco says it participates in E-Verify nationwide), and at some locations a drug test; guides disagree on when these happen. One guide says anyone who refuses or fails the drug test must wait a year to reapply, so ask the location what to expect.
