01 / For every The Home Depot candidate
The process, start to finish.
The Home Depot runs separate hiring tracks. This playbook covers hourly in-store and distribution center roles, such as cashier, customer service or sales associate, freight associate, lot associate and warehouse associate, because that is the track the company documents publicly.
The official assessment page lists assistant store manager, store manager, DC area supervisor or manager, delivery driver, outside sales and PRO roles, and Store Support Center roles (administrative, supply chain, marketing, technology) as salaried, corporate and support roles whose applications are tracked in Workday. Public sources describe those processes only thinly. A Department Supervisor posting carries the same online assessment text as the hourly postings. For hourly roles the official careers site documents only the first steps.
You apply online and are directed to an online assessment right after you submit. If your application is selected, the company may contact you by email or phone for an interview. Third-party guides describe a short phone screen, then an in-store interview of roughly 15 to 45 minutes with a department supervisor or manager.
Sources differ on the number of rounds: one guide says most hourly roles have a single interview and that specialist, supervisor and assistant manager roles often add a second one or a panel. Pre-employment checks and orientation follow, and the details come from third-party guides. In a 2022 release the company said its accelerated process could produce an offer within one day of applying.
The only evaluation characteristics the company publishes are the four that its online assessment questions focus on for hourly roles: Professional Experience, Customer Focus, Responsibility and Learning Potential. Job postings introduce them with the word including, so the list may not be complete. The company also publishes eight Core Values but does not present them as interview criteria. Interview questions listed by prep sites center on customer service, availability, teamwork, safety and willingness to learn.
The company's own interview tips tell candidates who have never worked in retail or are not home improvement experts not to worry.
Stage 1: Online application
varies
Apply at careers.homedepot.com to a specific store or building. How long you wait for contact varies by store and role, and one guide puts application review at 1-2 weeks. Hourly store and DC roles are tracked separately from salaried and corporate roles, whose application status is checked in Workday per the official assessment page.
Stage 2: Online assessment
about 17 minutes (official job postings); 72-hour or 96-hour completion window
Text-based and mobile-enabled, with 53 questions in which you rate your level of agreement with statements, per the official assessment page. The questions focus on Professional Experience, Customer Focus, Responsibility and Learning Potential, and one completion covers multiple hourly store and DC roles. The link appears right after you submit the application. You can stop and restart within the window.
Official pages conflict on the window: the assessment page says 96 hours and the job postings say 72 hours. Third-party guides give 20-45 minutes. One guide says progress cannot be saved, which contradicts the official pages, and one says the assessment includes basic math, which the official page does not mention.
Stage 3: Phone screen
10-30 minutes (third-party guides)
A short call with store HR or the hiring manager about availability, basic qualifications, customer service experience and interest in the role. One guide says 10-15 minutes and another says 15-30. A third guide says the process includes a phone interview and a face-to-face one. Not every guide lists this as a separate step, and no official page describes it.
Stage 4: In-store interview
15-45 minutes (third-party guides)
Guides disagree on length: CareerTestPrep says 15-30 minutes, while CleverPrep and The Interview Guys say 30-45. Usually one-on-one with a department supervisor, assistant store manager or store manager, and sometimes by phone or video. Behavioral and situational questions focus on customers, teamwork, availability and safety. The company's own 2020 tips say to arrive at least 15 minutes early, since stores are large, and to dress well while remembering it is a casual company.
Stage 5: Additional interview or panel (some roles)
varies
Varies by role and location. CareerTestPrep says most hourly store roles involve a single interview, that specialist, supervisor and assistant manager roles often have a second interview or a panel, and that the process varies by location. No official page gives a number of rounds.
Stage 6: Offer and pre-employment checks
varies; background check about 3-5 business days (one third-party guide)
In February 2022 the company said applicants could receive an offer within one day of applying. Guides disagree on order: CareerTestPrep says an offer is typically followed by background and eligibility checks, CleverPrep says the background check is completed before the formal offer, and The Interview Guys put the check at 3-5 business days.
Stage 7: Orientation and training
2-3 days orientation (one third-party guide)
Onboarding includes training, with an early focus on safety. One guide says training can start 1-2 weeks after the offer.

The framework.
Online assessment characteristics for hourly roles
01
Professional Experience
02
Customer Focus
03
Responsibility
04
Learning Potential
Taken from the official Online Assessment page (careers.homedepot.com/online-assessment/), which lists four areas under the heading Assessment questions focus on, and from the assessment section of official hourly job postings, including a Department Supervisor posting. The postings say the questions are based on characteristics related to success in hourly roles, "including" these four, so the list may not be exhaustive. The official definitions are as follows. Professional Experience covers your work or school experience.
Customer Focus covers how you would interact with customers and others in a retail environment. Responsibility is how dependable you are and whether you complete tasks reliably and on time. Learning Potential is your willingness and ability to learn new things. These four characteristics are published for the online assessment, not as an interview rubric.

The company also publishes eight Core Values: Creating Shareholder Value, Entrepreneurial Spirit, Taking Care of Our People, Respect for All People, Doing the Right Thing, Building Strong Relationships, Giving Back and Excellent Customer Service. Prep sites report questions about them, and the company's 2019 interview tips say it is eager to hire people who share its values, but no official page says interviews score against them, so they are not mapped here.
03 / Coach's notes
Coach's tips.
01
Treat the online assessment as the first screening step. The official page says it has 53 questions in which you rate your agreement with statements on Professional Experience, Customer Focus, Responsibility and Learning Potential, and one completion covers multiple hourly store and DC roles. Do it somewhere free of distractions, and check your posting for the deadline, since official pages give both 72 and 96 hours.
02
Build most of your stories around customers: going above and beyond, calming an upset customer, juggling several customers at once, and what you do when you do not know an answer. The company's own 2019 interview tips tell candidates who have never worked in retail or are not home improvement experts not to worry, so be honest about gaps and show you want to learn.
03
Give a clear, honest answer on availability. Weekend, evening and holiday availability comes up in several prep guides, and The Interview Guys calls weekend availability typically non-negotiable. Know your real hours before the interview.
04
Learn the eight Core Values by name (Creating Shareholder Value, Entrepreneurial Spirit, Taking Care of Our People, Respect for All People, Doing the Right Thing, Building Strong Relationships, Giving Back, Excellent Customer Service), since prep sites list questions about the company's values. The company's 2019 tips single out willingness to give back and mention Team Depot volunteering.
05
Prepare one safety story and one integrity answer, such as speaking up about an unsafe practice or refusing to help a coworker steal. CareerTestPrep, MockQuestions and CleverPrep all list safety questions, MockQuestions adds the coworker-theft question, and CareerTestPrep describes lot associate interviews as availability and safety focused.
06
For the in-store interview, follow the company's own advice: arrive at least 15 minutes early because stores are large, dress well while remembering it is a casual company, and ask questions about teamwork and benefits. If you do not hear back after an interview, the company's 2020 tips say you can submit a new application for another store or role through the careers site.
