How Target Interviews in 2026: Process, Questions & What They Score

HOW TO READ THIS PLAYBOOK

Compiled from 14 public sources: candidate interview reports, coaching guides, and Target's own hiring pages. Interview processes change and vary by role, team, level, and region. This is one well-documented shape of Target's interviews to prepare against, not a script of what your interview will be. Confirm specifics with your recruiter. Target is best known for its US retail stores, and this dossier covers the track it hires most for: store hourly roles and store leadership (Team Member, Team Leader, Executive Team Leader), with notes on how the same process stretches for corporate roles at its Minneapolis headquarters. Target runs applications through Workday and uses a mix of interview formats that it picks per role: live phone or virtual interviews, in-person interviews, and recorded video interviews on HireVue. The recorded video interview is the most distinctive stage and takes about 30 minutes; Target says recruiters respond within five business days of a submission. Target does publish an evaluation framework, in the form of its own Interview Prep Guide, which states that each example interview question assesses one of four areas: job knowledge, Inclusivity, Connection and Drive. Rough total time to hire is not published by Target; coaching sources report roughly 3 to 10 days for store roles (about 14 days on average across job titles) and 4 to 6 weeks for corporate roles, with 1 interview round typical for entry-level hourly jobs and 2 to 3 for leadership and corporate jobs. All offers are contingent on a background check, and some roles add a drug screen within 24 hours of accepting.

The Process

  1. 1

Online application in Workday · varies

Applications are submitted through Target's careers site into Workday. A resume is not required but is highly encouraged; you can also enter skills manually or autofill from LinkedIn. Target says some applications require supplemental information such as work availability or a quick assessment on job-related skills. Status is tracked under My Applications on the Workday Candidate Homepage. Varies by role and by whether an assessment is attached; one coaching source reports initial screening within 24 to 72 hours.

  2. 2

    Recruiter review · varies

Target's recruitment team reviews applications and may contact you to talk about the role, the team and the company, or you may only get email updates. Varies by req volume, role and season; Target does not publish a service level for this stage.

  3. 3

Recorded video interview (HireVue) · about 30 minutes

Used for some business areas rather than all; Target's own page says candidates may experience one or more interview formats depending on the position and other factors. You set up camera and microphone, watch an intro video, get unlimited practice attempts, then record answers to pre-set questions. You can re-record answers before final submission and Target only sees the final submission. Coaching sources report 5 to 8 questions with roughly 2 minutes to prepare and 3 minutes to answer each. Target says recruiters respond within five business days of submission, and that answers must be your own without AI assistance except for approved accessibility accommodations.

  4. 4

Recruiter phone screen · 15 to 30 minutes

Reported as optional and role-dependent, covering qualifications, availability and interest. Not described as a separate named stage on Target's own hiring process page, which groups phone, virtual and in-person interviews together; coaching sources give only response-time windows for this stage, not where in the overall sequence it typically falls.

  5. 5

Live interview (in-person or virtual) with the hiring leader · varies

Target describes phone and virtual interviews as live conversations and in-person interviews as meeting the interviewer face to face. Target's own prep guide says the interview opens with introductions and a role overview taking about five minutes, and advises aiming for about five minutes per answer. Reported lengths vary by source and level: 30 to 45 minutes, 30 to 60 minutes for entry level, and in some stores two shorter back-to-back conversations of about 20 minutes each with a team lead and then a manager. Varies by level, team and store.

  6. 6

Additional leadership or panel rounds (leadership and corporate roles) · varies

Reported as 1 round for entry level and 2 to 3 rounds for leadership and corporate roles, sometimes as a panel covering role-specific topics, traits and career goals. Varies by level and function; corporate and tech interviews are reported to weight role depth, guest impact, data, product, process and values fit, while store interviews weight guest service, reliability, teamwork, availability and conflict handling.

  7. 7

Offer, background check and pre-employment screening · varies

Target sends a written offer by email or phone detailing position, pay and benefits. All offers are contingent on pre-employment screening including a background check run by Accurate Background after you accept. Certain positions require a drug screen within 24 hours of accepting, and not completing it forfeits the conditional offer. Coaching sources report the check taking 3 to 5 business days; Target itself does not publish a duration.

  8. 8

    Onboarding (Target Welcome) · varies

Target Welcome is the orientation and onboarding experience, covering Target's values and expectations, followed by role training and development resources. Varies by role and location.

  9. 9

    Training and development · ongoing

Target's own hiring-process page names this as a sixth, final step after onboarding: ongoing support and skill-building resources meant to help employees advance their careers. No duration or further detail is published for this step.

  10. 10

    Total process · varies

Target does not publish an end-to-end timeline. Coaching and aggregator sources report roughly 3 to 10 days for store roles, an approximately 14 day average across job titles, and 4 to 6 weeks for corporate roles with multiple rounds. Varies heavily by level, function and hiring season.

Evaluation Framework

Target Interview Prep Guide assessment areas

job knowledgeInclusivityConnectionDrive

Target publishes an Interview Prep Guide on its own corporate careers site. It contains four practice prompts, and above each one the guide states what that question assesses: "This question is assessing job knowledge", "This question is assessing Inclusivity", "This question is assessing Connection", and "This question is assessing Drive". The item names above are copied exactly from that guide, including its lower-case rendering of "job knowledge", and were re-confirmed in this pass by reading the PDF directly page by page (not from a search snippet or a lossy HTML conversion). The guide does not give the set a collective name, so the framework name here is descriptive rather than an official title. The guide also tells candidates to "Give responses that relate to the required skills and Target values mentioned in each question to succeed in the job," which confirms Inclusivity, Connection and Drive are being used as values-based interview criteria, and it paces the interview at about five minutes per question plus a five-minute opening. Two cautions. First, the guide is marked "(c) 2022 Target Brands, Inc. (rev. 01/2022)" (confirmed on the cover page by direct read), so it may lag current practice. Second, Target's separate careers culture page presents "Care", "Grow" and "Win" as culture pillars ("we show up for each other... invest in our people... do the right thing"); re-fetching that page confirms these are presented only as culture description, with no statement anywhere that they are used as interview scoring criteria, so they are deliberately not listed as framework items here.

Coach's Tips

Prepare four stories, one per assessment area, and pace them long. Target's own Interview Prep Guide states that each question assesses job knowledge, Inclusivity, Connection or Drive, and tells candidates to allow about five minutes per response. A crisp 60 second answer is under-length for this interview; add the people you worked with, the process you used and the outcome.

Use the word guest, not customer. Target's careers material and its reported interview questions both refer to shoppers as guests, and mirroring that vocabulary signals you have actually read about the company.

Treat the recorded video interview as a rehearsed take, not a live one. Target says the tool gives unlimited practice attempts, lets you re-record before final submission, and only shows the interviewer your final submission. Use the practice question to fix lighting, framing and audio before the real questions start, and check your device is charged with a strong connection.

Do not use AI help on the recorded interview. Target states explicitly that responses must reflect your own knowledge and judgment without AI-generated assistance, with an exception only for approved accessibility accommodations. Reading from a script on screen is visible on camera.

Know the follow-up clock. Target says recruiters respond within five business days after a recorded video submission. Separately, a coaching source that tracks response times recommends waiting about 5 to 7 business days after any submission or interview before a first follow-up, and treats silence past the 3-week mark as the point for one final follow-up rather than continuing to wait.

Have your availability and screening answers straight before you apply. Target's FAQ says some applications include supplemental work-availability information or a short skills assessment, that all offers depend on a background check run by Accurate Background, and that some roles require a drug screen within 24 hours of accepting. Track everything through the Workday Candidate Homepage under My Applications.
