How PayPal Interviews in 2026: Process, Questions & What They Score
Compiled from 26 public sources: candidate interview reports, coaching guides, and PayPal's own hiring pages. Interview processes change and vary by role, team, level, and region. This is one well-documented shape of PayPal's interviews to prepare against, not a script of what your interview will be. Confirm specifics with your recruiter. SupaCV is not affiliated with or endorsed by PayPal.
PayPal Holdings is a payments company whose largest and best documented hiring track is software engineering (backend, largely Java and Spring, plus platform, data and infrastructure roles). This dossier covers that engineering track; PayPal also hires into product, risk, compliance, sales and customer operations, but public evidence on those loops is thin and none of it is covered here. PayPal does publish an evaluation framework that it points candidates at directly. Its careers site tells interviewees to "Learn about our company values and Leadership Principles", and the official company page lists three Leadership Principles: Put People First, Work Customer Back, Win Together. Those three names are reproduced verbatim in the framework field. The same careers page tells candidates to give a detailed account for each competency and to vary examples across jobs, which implies competency based interviewing, but PayPal names no competencies and publishes no scoring rubric, per-stage timetable, or statement that interviewers grade candidates against the principles. Treat the principles as stated company language rather than as a confirmed interview scorecard. PayPal's own careers pages describe the process only as a recruiter phone screen, interviews with team members, then next steps and an offer, with no durations and no round counts. Everything more detailed comes from coaching guides and candidate write-ups, which consistently report: recruiter screen, a HackerRank online assessment, one or two live technical rounds (some run by the third party vendor Karat), a design round, and a hiring manager or managerial round. The online assessment format splits by hiring route: on-campus reports describe eleven questions in 90 minutes with only two coding problems, while experienced and coaching sources describe two to three coding problems. Reported end-to-end duration conflicts: one coaching guide says three to five weeks, while Indeed respondent data quoted by one coaching site says a majority finish within two days to one week and 11 percent wait over a month. No single total is asserted here.
The Process
- 1
Application and resume review · varies
PayPal's official Applying page says to apply directly or create a profile; it does not accept email, fax or paper resumes, and offers a Get Matched resume analysis that suggests roles. The official How We Recruit page describes the process only as Applying, Interviewing and New Hire Experience, with no stated durations. One aggregator adds recruiter outreach and employee referral as entry routes. Duration varies by requisition and region.
- 2
Recruiter phone screen · 20 to 30 minutes
PayPal states officially that recruiters reach out by phone to discuss the position and your experience and, if there is a match, set up interviews with team members. The duration is from coaching guides only: one says 20 to 30 minutes, two say 30 minutes. Topics reported: background, level, location, compensation expectations and why PayPal.
- 3
Online assessment (HackerRank) · 60 to 90 minutes
Format depends on hiring route. Coaching guides and a freshers guide describe two to three data structures and algorithms problems at easy to medium difficulty in 60 to 90 minutes (one guide says one to two). Experienced candidate reports describe two problems (one easy, one hard) or three medium to hard dynamic programming and string problems. Two on-campus reports describe eleven questions in 90 minutes, of which two were coding and the rest multiple choice on C, JavaScript and SQL; a 2023 report describes ten multiple choice questions on operating systems and networks plus one coding problem; a 2020 on-campus report describes two coding problems. Not every requisition includes this stage: one coaching guide's sequence has no assessment, and another says the sequence varies by role.
- 4
Technical screen (live coding) · 45 to 60 minutes
One to two live coding rounds in a shared editor, focused on data structures and algorithms plus language fundamentals (Java in most candidate reports; one coaching guide also lists JavaScript questions such as closures and the event loop). Durations: one coaching guide says 45 to 60 minutes each, another says two rounds of one hour; a 2020 on-campus report had two one hour technical rounds and a 2023 report a 45 minute one. Two candidate posts (an Android engineer in 2024 and a Python backend engineer in 2025) say their first live coding round was run through Karat, a third party interviewing vendor, rather than by PayPal engineers; both were written before the interview, so no round detail is available. One coaching guide says a take-home assignment with five to six days to complete may follow the technical rounds; no candidate report reviewed mentions one. Number of rounds varies by role and by how the earlier rounds went.
- 5
Onsite or virtual loop · 4 to 5 rounds of 45 to 60 minutes
The core of the evaluation. The round count and per-round duration are from a single coaching guide; other guides describe up to five onsite interviews (one lists pair programming at 30 to 40 minutes, system design, project experience, a behavioral or hiring manager interview and an engineering manager interview; another describes a two hour session with two coding questions). Candidate reports show three to five interview rounds in total after the assessment, covering coding, core language and low level design, system design, a project deep dive and behavioral questions. One SE 2 report says its middle rounds were held on a single day with results returned within about two hours, with the hiring manager round the following week (the report is internally inconsistent on whether that final round was the same day). Number of rounds varies by level and team.
- 6
System design or low level design round · 45 to 60 minutes
The duration and the claim that this round applies only to mid and senior roles both come from one coaching guide. Another coaching guide includes a system design round in the final loop without any level restriction and instead adds a techno-managerial round on architecture and technical debt for mid to senior roles; a freshers guide says the design round applies to specific roles. Coaching prompts skew toward payments infrastructure. Candidate reports show pure low level or object oriented design prompts (a login and profile REST API, files and folders modelling, a RESTful CRUD service, a library management class design) rather than only large distributed system prompts. Whether you get this round varies by level and role.
- 7
Hiring manager or managerial round · about 45 minutes
A mix of project deep dive, architecture trade-offs and behavioral questions. The 45 minute figure comes from one coaching guide and matches a 2020 on-campus report. Candidate reports show this round can still contain coding problems (merge K sorted lists, heap internals and external sorting in one SDE II report; backtracking and hash set problems in an SE 2 report; Java 8, stateless REST and code quality tooling in a backend Java report), so do not treat it as behavioral only. One coaching guide says mid to senior candidates often get a techno-managerial round blending architecture with technical debt questions.
- 8
HR culture fit, debrief and offer · varies
PayPal states that once all interviews are complete the recruiter reaches out to discuss next steps, and that an offer is followed by a background check and onboarding. One SDE II report describes a short HR round on location, aspirations and compensation. One coaching source says the recruiter contacts candidates within two to three business days and offer letters typically arrive within a week. Overall time to offer is disputed and thinly evidenced: one coaching guide says three to five weeks end to end; one coaching site, citing Indeed respondent data, says 51 percent finished within two days to one week and 11 percent waited over a month, and an aggregator repeats that Indeed claim without the percentages. One backend Java report had a one week gap between the assessment and the interview rounds. Varies by level, team and region.
Evaluation Framework
PayPal Leadership Principles
These three names are copied verbatim from PayPal's official Mission, Vision and Values page at about.pypl.com, which lists exactly three items under Leadership Principles. PayPal's careers site connects them to hiring directly: its official Interviewing page tells candidates to "Learn about our company values and Leadership Principles" as preparation. PayPal's official descriptions, verbatim: Put People First means "building the next generation by unlocking their superpowers, providing and seeking constructive feedback, and fostering belonging". Work Customer Back means "starting with our customers' biggest needs and solving them through technology and innovation to create simple, valuable experiences". Win Together means "moving quickly, working as one PayPal, and delivering great end-to-end results". The same official page separately lists four core values, also verbatim: Inclusion, Innovation, Collaboration, Wellness. These are company values rather than a stated interview rubric, so they are not included in the framework array and no question is mapped to them. Important limits. PayPal does not publish an interview scorecard, competency ratings, or a statement that interviewers score candidates against the Leadership Principles by name. The official Interviewing page does say "Be specific and give a detailed account for each competency" and "Vary your examples, as much as possible, try not to make them from only one job", which implies competency based interviewing, but it names no competencies. None of the nine candidate reports reviewed shows an interviewer naming a principle in the room. Several coaching guides assert that PayPal evaluates against its principles or values but either misname them or substitute their own lists (see correctionsMade). The mappings in frameworkRefs below are therefore topical (the question probes the subject matter the principle's official description covers), not evidence that PayPal grades that question against that principle. PayPal's official 2024 interview tips article endorses the STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action, Results) for answering, so structure behavioral stories that way.
Sample Interview Questions
Coding and data structures19 questions
- Write code to print a given linked list in reverse.Tests recursion or an explicit stack to emit nodes in reverse order without mutating the list.
- Design a data structure such that insertion and deletion are done in constant time.Tests pairing a hash map with an array or doubly linked list for O(1) insert and delete.
- Write a program to validate IPv4 addresses.Tests string parsing with edge cases: exactly four octets, range 0 to 255, leading zeros, empty parts.
- Given a board of m by n cells containing '+' and '0', a source and a destination, determine whether you can reach the destination without moving into a '+' cell. Follow up: compute the minimum moves to exit from any boundary '0' cell.Tests BFS or DFS over a grid with blocked cells; the follow up needs shortest path to any boundary cell.
- Find the intersection point across multiple linked lists when nodes can hold duplicate values.Tests intersecting by node identity rather than value, via length alignment or a visited node set.
- Find all elements in an array that appear more than n divided by k times.Tests the Misra Gries generalisation of Boyer Moore majority voting with at most k minus 1 candidates.
- Given two nodes that carry parent pointers, find their lowest common ancestor.Tests walking up parent pointers with depth alignment or pointer switching for O(1) extra space.
- Merge K sorted lists.Tests a min heap of list heads for O(N log K) merging; asked in the managerial round, not only coding rounds.
- Find the first and last position of an element in a sorted array in logarithmic time.Tests two modified binary searches for the leftmost and rightmost occurrence in O(log N).
- Merge two arrays that contain null values and return the median.Tests null filtering then merge or a partition based median; the interviewer expected two approaches.
- Reverse a singly linked list without using recursion.Tests iterative pointer reversal with prev, current and next references.
- Count the number of inversions in an array.Tests modifying merge sort to count cross pairs in O(N log N).
- How do you generate all permutations of an array?Tests backtracking with swaps or used flags; handle duplicates if the interviewer adds them.
- Write an algorithm to convert roman numerals into integers.Tests a symbol value map with the subtractive rule when a smaller value precedes a larger one.
- Given a number n, find integral pairs x and y such that 1/x + 1/y = 1/n!Tests number theory: rewrite as (x-n)(y-n)=n^2 and count divisors; the source writes 1/n! which may mean factorial.
- Convert a string into a zigzag pattern over N rows and read it out row by row.Tests index cycling with period 2(N-1) or simulating direction flips across rows.
- Find the largest subarray with an equal number of zeros and ones.Tests prefix sums with 0 mapped to minus 1 and a hash map of first seen sums.

Coach's Tips
Prepare in Java and Spring even if it is not your daily language. Three of the four experienced candidate reports reviewed here lean on Java internals: HashMap implementation, HashMap versus HashTable thread safety, Java 8 streams and CompletableFuture, Spring versus Spring Boot, @Controller versus @RestController. Coaching guides describe the technical screen as data structures plus language fundamentals, and one also lists JavaScript questions (closures, the event loop, var versus let versus const), so the language depends on the team. If your background is another stack, say so early with the recruiter and confirm which language the loop will use, and ask whether your live coding round is run by Karat, since two candidates report that vendor handling the first technical interview.
Bring one system you can defend for an hour. A project architecture deep dive with explicit trade offs appears in three of the four experienced candidate write ups reviewed, and it recurs in both the technical loop and the managerial round. Know why you chose the datastore, where the bottleneck is, what you would change now, and what the failure modes are.
Frame designs around money moving correctly, not just around scale. The design prompts sourced here cluster on payment pipelines and gateways, an idempotent payment processor, fraud detection and notification services. Volunteer idempotency keys, retry and reconciliation behaviour, double spend and duplicate charge handling, and audit trails. Reliability and data integrity are the axis this company cares about.
Use STAR and vary your stories, because PayPal says to. Its official 2024 interview tips article expands STAR as Situation, Task, Action, Results and gives a prompt for each letter. Its official Interviewing page adds two instructions: be specific and give a detailed account for each competency, and vary your examples so they do not all come from one job. Prepare several distinct stories rather than recycling one project, since the behavioral questions sourced here cover mistakes, initiative, ownership, customer impact, negotiation and learning under a deadline.
Read PayPal's Leadership Principles and values before the behavioral round. PayPal's official Interviewing page tells candidates to learn its company values and Leadership Principles as preparation. Put People First, Work Customer Back and Win Together give you the vocabulary the company itself uses, even though PayPal does not publish that interviewers score against them by name. Ignore coaching guides that list different principle or value names; several were found to be wrong or outdated.
Do not treat the manager round as a soft round. Candidate reports show the managerial and hiring manager rounds still containing live coding (merge K sorted lists, backtracking and hash set problems, sorting and heap internals) alongside the behavioral questions. Stay warmed up on code through the final stage.
If you are interviewing on campus, expect a different assessment. On-campus reports describe an eleven question, 90 minute HackerRank test with only two coding problems and the rest multiple choice on C, JavaScript and SQL, followed by a technical round (arrays, heap implementation, time complexity) and a behavioral round (self introduction, projects, why PayPal, a product feature prompt). Experienced hires report two to three coding problems instead.
