01 / For every Klarna candidate
The process, start to finish.
Klarna's careers site says it hires for skill sets ("competences") rather than specific positions. The competences page lists 11 (Engineering, Product Management, Analytics, Business Development and others), while the careers home page says 10. This playbook covers the software engineering track, the best-documented one, but the early logic test appears to apply across roles. Klarna's careers pages do not describe interview steps.
Older official pages on the application process and interview tips show up in search results, but they now return 404, so nothing here is taken from them. The picture below comes from candidate reports on Blind (2021 to 2023), two Taro reports (2025) and third-party prep guides (2026), several of which state no sources. A common sequence in these sources, with wide variation by team, level and office: 1. Recruiter screen of about 30 minutes. 2.
A short abstract-reasoning logic test. Prep sites name it the Kattis test and describe 18 picture-pattern questions in 15 minutes. It can be supervised and guides call it a filter. Reports disagree on whether it comes before or after the recruiter call. 3. An online coding assessment or take-home (not in every report). 4. A live coding screen of about 60 minutes. 5. A "skills" interview or virtual onsite.
Reports include coding, a system design round of about 1 hour and a behavioral round on Klarna's leadership principles. One 2023 Blind post gives 60 minutes each. 6. Sometimes a team-fit or hiring-manager conversation. In one NYC marketing thread the loop also had a "bar raiser" and a presentation. Prep guides give 5 to 7 rounds, but a November 2025 Berlin first-hand report lists only three (HR, technical, behavioural).
Total time is reported as 4 to 6 weeks, 6 to 8 weeks, or about 36 days on average. Candidates report long silences after final rounds (a 2022 Blind poster heard nothing for about 3 weeks after a final interview), and a 2025 Paris candidate reports no news after being asked to book a second round. Job postings and a 2022 press article refer to eight leadership principles, and prep guides say interviewers map behavioral answers to them.
Klarna's official principles page is no longer available: the known URL returns 404. Two third-party lists differ in wording for at least one item (Deliver Results versus Deliver quality results). So no framework is included here and no question is mapped to a principle. Glassdoor, the largest store of Klarna candidate reports, is not used as a source here.
Stage 1: Recruiter screen
about 30 minutes
Covers background, motivation (why Klarna), salary expectations and notice period. One guide also lists hybrid work and visa sponsorship. Light on technical content. One guide puts it at 20 to 30 minutes. Reports disagree on whether it comes before or after the logic test (see next stage). A 2025 Berlin candidate calls it an HR round and gives no length.
Stage 2: Logic / abstract reasoning test
about 15 minutes (sources vary: 12-15 min, one guide says 30-60 min)
Multiple-choice next-in-series picture patterns, described by one prep site as the Kattis test: 18 questions in 15 minutes. Reported for marketing, data engineering and back-end applicants alike, and one prep site says anyone applying to Klarna takes it. One Berlin back-end candidate took it supervised (15 min), and other guides call it video-proctored. Order varies: Blind reports from a Berlin back-end candidate, a NYC marketing candidate and a poster in the logic-test thread put it after a recruiter call, while Calibrd and a 2021 Blind poster put it before any chat, and one prep site says a recruiter arranges the interview after the test is passed. One Blind commenter cites a bar of 15 of 18, and one prep site says candidates usually need at least 15 of 18 but each role has its own pass mark; Klarna has not confirmed either. One Blind poster says they were told the result is not strictly pass or fail. Prep guides call it a hard filter, and a commenter tagged as Klarna says low scorers are eventually disqualified. One prep site says no retest on the same application.
Order relative to the recruiter screen differs between reports
Stage 3: Online coding assessment or take-home
varies
Varies by team, office and pipeline. One guide describes 2-3 medium DSA problems on HackerRank or similar within a set window. Another reports receiving a codebase about 24 hours ahead and then improving it in a live session. CleverPrep lists a logic and coding assessment of 1-2 hours. Blind posters report an online coding assessment before the skills round.
Stage 4: Live coding / technical phone screen
about 60 minutes (one report: 1 hr 15 min)
Guides describe medium-difficulty data structures and algorithms. A 2021 Berlin back-end candidate got a sliding-window problem in a 75-minute live session. A November 2025 Berlin candidate reports a LeetCode hard problem where an optimal solution was not expected, with no duration given. Talking through the approach before coding is advised.
Stage 5: Skills interview / virtual onsite: coding and craft
about 3-4 hours in total per one guide (another guide gives 4-6 hours)
Guides describe two coding sessions plus a craft deep dive on a past project. A 2023 Blind poster described the skills round as 60 minutes coding, 60 minutes system design and 60 minutes behavioral. One guide gives 4-5 rounds of 45-60 minutes each. In these accounts the system design and behavioral rounds below are sittings inside this block, whereas some candidates describe them as standalone interviews, so the stage count varies by team and office.
Stage 6: System design round
about 1 hour (one guide says it can run up to 2 hours)
A mid-level front-end-leaning candidate had a 1-hour system design interview with an Engineering Manager, told only that it would be about designing a web service. Prep guides say prompts center on checkout payments, duplicate charges, fraud and ledgers. Not every report includes one: the 2021 and 2025 Berlin first-hand reports do not mention system design.
Stage 7: Behavioral / leadership principles round
45-60 minutes
Focused on Klarna's leadership principles. A Berlin back-end candidate passed live coding but was rejected on feedback from a 45-minute behavioral interview. A November 2025 Berlin candidate also describes a behavioural round on leadership principles. CleverPrep describes it as 45-60 minutes. For a NYC marketing role, this was a separate leadership 'bar raiser' round where STAR answers were advised.
Stage 8: Team fit / hiring manager round
varies (reports give 30 minutes; one prep site says 30-60 minutes)
Reported as a 30-minute team-fit interview for one engineer, and as a separate team round after the skills round for another. In one NYC marketing thread the loop also included a presentation. Whether this round happens varies by team and role.
Stage 9: Decision and offer
1-2 weeks per one guide; candidates report longer waits or no reply
A prep guide says decisions typically come within 1-2 weeks. A 2022 Blind poster reports about 3 weeks with no update after a final interview. A 2025 Paris candidate reports no news after being asked to book a second-round slot, and says an earlier application also went unanswered.
Slow or absent follow-up is a recurring complaint

02 / What Klarna scores
No publicly documented framework
03 / Coach's notes
Coach's tips.
01
Prepare for the logic test early. It is an abstract picture-pattern test (one prep site describes 18 questions in 15 minutes) that back-end, data engineering and marketing applicants all report taking, sometimes under supervision. Prep guides call it a hard filter, and one Blind commenter tagged as Klarna says low scorers are eventually disqualified. Practice timed next-in-series pattern puzzles.
02
Do not treat the behavioral round as a formality. A Berlin back-end candidate (2021) solved the live coding problem and was still rejected on feedback from the 45-minute behavioral interview. Job postings say Klarna has eight leadership principles, but the official page is no longer available, so ask the recruiter for the current list, then prepare a concrete STAR story for each.
03
Give payments-flavored system design answers. One prep guide says prompts center on checkout payments, duplicate-charge prevention, fraud and ledgers, so cover idempotency keys with safe retries, ledger consistency and auditability (the same guide says interviewers value strong consistency and append-only ledger records), fraud scoring inside the checkout latency budget, and reconciliation.
04
Ask the recruiter exactly which rounds your loop includes. Reports range from a take-home or provided codebase followed by a live discussion, to LeetCode-style live coding, to a short three-step loop (Berlin, 2025), and some loops add a separate system design interview with an Engineering Manager or a team-fit call.
05
Have one real story about using AI tools in engineering work. Three prep guides report a question about how you use AI tools in your workflow, and one of them names GitHub Copilot and Cursor.
06
Plan for slow decisions. Some candidates report weeks of silence after final rounds or no reply at all, so confirm next steps at the end of each round, follow up politely, and keep other processes running.
