01 / For every Monzo candidate

The process, start to finish.

This playbook covers software engineering hiring, mainly backend, because that is the track Monzo is best known for and the one it documents most publicly. Mobile, engineering manager and Senior Staff+ differences are noted where official pages describe them. Official Monzo sources (a backend interview blog post, a mobile interview guide, a Senior Staff+ interview blog post, an AI-use guide and current Greenhouse job listings) describe a similar shape that varies by track and level.

It starts with a recruiter call and a one hour initial call with engineers about a recent project, with no coding. Next is a practical stage where the candidate chooses either a take-home exercise followed by a review call, or a live pair coding session.

Then come a systems design interview and a one hour behavioural interview (the mobile guide lists the behavioural interview first), and on the backend page a Hiring Committee decides the offer and matches the candidate to a team. Senior Staff+ adds a sixth interview on impact and leadership and uses a structured debrief in place of a formal hiring committee.

Backend listings put the average process at about 4 weeks (3 to 4 weeks for engineering managers); one mirrored Principal listing says 4 to 6 weeks. Monzo says its pair coding stage is not LeetCode style, there is no whiteboarding or coding at the initial call, and LLMs may not be used during interviews. Listings say candidates are interviewed across the whole framework, meaning Monzo's public Engineering Progression Framework (v4.1 is the latest version found).

That framework names three areas: Impact, Technical Skills and Behaviours. It is a progression document rather than an interview scorecard. Monzo does not publish its sample questions. The questions here come from official topic lists plus third-party aggregators whose sourcing cannot be checked, and only a few appear on two independent domains. Candidate reports on Glassdoor, Indeed and Reddit are not included.

Stage 1:

Application

varies

Varies by role, and the backend pages do not describe an application stage. For mobile roles, the application includes written answers on building customer-centric apps, a technical challenge you have faced, and why you are interested in Monzo, plus your CV. The Associate Software Engineer (intern) listing describes short application questions, then an exercise testing programming and problem solving, then final interviews on Google Meet. No duration is stated.

Stage 2:

Recruiter call

about 30 minutes (engineering manager listings); not stated for backend or Senior Staff+

A recruiter learns about you, explains the process, and covers Monzo's mission and how engineers contribute to it. Monzo says the recruiter always shares the outcome or next steps. Both engineering manager listings give this call 30 minutes, and one of them calls it informal. The backend and Senior Staff+ pages give no duration.

Stage 3:

Initial call (project deep dive)

1 hour

A video call with engineers, possibly future teammates (on the mobile guide, an engineer in the same role). You discuss your background and a recent project you had significant input on: implementation details, trade-offs, data structures, language choices, performance, reliability and security, and what you would change in hindsight. No whiteboarding or coding. For Senior Staff+, topics also include leading projects with stakeholders and aligning technical work with company objectives. For engineering managers, this hour is led by a Senior Engineering Manager or Engineering Director and uses example-based questions on people leadership, product delivery and technical leadership.

Stage 4:

Take-home task or pair coding exercise (candidate's choice)

varies

Backend take-home: implement a small program in your own IDE and language, with a README covering structure, setup and trade-offs, then walk reviewers through your code on a task review call. The current backend page gives no time limit. A 2022 first-person account on Monzo's blog says there was no time limit, that the author spent a few hours on it, and that about two weeks passed in elapsed time because of other take-homes. Backend pair coding: implement functions against a provided interface with a Monzo engineer, in languages such as Go, Python or Java. Mobile take-home: strictly timeboxed to 4 hours with no submission deadline, inside an existing Android or iOS codebase, followed by a 45 minute review call. Mobile pair coding: 1 hour. For Senior Staff+, Monzo describes about one hour of pairing in Go, Java or Python and says the take-home is the option if you cannot pair in those languages. Monzo says pair coding is not LeetCode style and not a speed test, and documentation lookups are allowed. Monzo's AI guide says there is no blanket ban on AI for take-home tasks, but the test is whether you refine your own work rather than replace it, and it advises asking your recruiter.

The official backend page gives the pair coding session as both 45 minutes and an hour. Third-party guides (TechPrep, Final Round AI) claim a 3 to 4 hour take-home or a 90 minute pairing session, which official pages do not confirm.

Stage 5:

Systems design interview (final stage)

about 1 hour (stated for mobile and engineering manager roles); not stated on the backend page; described as slightly longer for Senior Staff+

Backend: design a scalable, reliable, fault-tolerant system for a hypothetical, non-Monzo problem in a collaborative sketching tool such as Excalidraw. The interviewer may add new information that forces changes, and trade-offs in performance, consistency and availability are assessed. Mobile: two mobile engineers give you a UI design and requirements, and you produce an end-to-end implementation blueprint. Engineering managers: a collaborative whiteboarding session with a Staff or Principal Engineer. The author of a 2022 first-person post on Monzo's blog called it the hardest interview of their life.

Order differs by track: the mobile guide lists the behavioural interview before systems design, while the backend page puts systems design first. One mirrored Principal listing puts system design before the practical stage.

Stage 6:

Behavioural interview (final stage)

1 hour

A video call with two interviewers, engineers or engineering managers who may come from any part of the business. It covers four areas: communication, learning, working in a team and delivering projects. Monzo's tips ask you to explain your stakeholders and how alignment was maintained. For engineering managers, the loop instead has three 60 minute interviews over 1 to 2 days (Team and Org Management, System Design, Behavioural) plus a 30 minute chat with an engineering leader. Senior Staff+ adds a separate final Impact and Leadership interview, with no stated duration.

Stage 7:

Hiring Committee decision and team matching

varies

No duration is stated. On the backend page, interviewer feedback is reviewed together, and a Hiring Committee makes the offer decision, helps spot bias and checks alignment on values and behaviours. The Senior and Staff Backend Engineer listings say the final match uses your skills, experience, preferences and business need. The engineering manager listing says applications are considered across all open EM roles and you are matched to a role. Senior Staff+ uses a structured debrief of all interviewers in place of a formal hiring committee. The mobile guide only says feedback is reviewed and successful candidates receive an offer.

02 / What Monzo scores

Engineering Progression Framework v4.1

  1. 01

    Impact

  2. 02

    Technical Skills

  3. 03

    Behaviours

Monzo publishes this framework as a PDF. The latest version found is v4.1 (status Live, last updated 15/09/2025). The v4.0 PDF (status Live, last updated 13/02/2025) is still hosted and is linked from the same Senior Backend Engineer listing, and both versions name the same three sections: Impact, Technical Skills and Behaviours. Scope is described as an additional measure of seniority, not a separate category.

The Technical Skills section replaces an earlier iteration called Mastery, and Behaviours brings together what used to be separate influence, communication and leadership sections. It is a career progression document meant to guide performance and progression conversations between managers and engineers, not a published interview rubric. Monzo's backend Greenhouse listings say candidates will be interviewed across the whole framework and that recruiters help choose a level, and the Staff Backend Engineer listing says the interview process determines levelling.

Read the rest of the framework notes

A Built In mirror of the Senior listing repeats this. The backend interview blog also says the Hiring Committee checks alignment on values and behaviours, but it does not name the values. Engineering managers have a separate Engineering Manager Progression Framework (v2.0, status Live) whose level tables use the columns Team and execution, People and Leadership; one Barcelona engineering manager listing still links a v1.0 PDF.
