01 / For every Modern Health candidate

The process, start to finish.

Modern Health is a workplace mental health benefits platform sold to employers. This playbook covers its corporate (non-clinical) hiring, which is where nearly all public candidate reports sit: software engineering, plus go-to-market roles such as sales, SDR and client success. The provider network (therapists and coaches) applies through a separate channel (the official providers page links to an external application form and describes no steps) and is barely documented in public, so it is not covered.

Of 77 Glassdoor reports, about 47 are readable without signing in, and this playbook rests on those. In them, the corporate process commonly runs: a recruiter screen of about 30 minutes, a hiring manager call, for many roles an exercise (an SDR report and a digital producer report say there was no assignment), a virtual panel or onsite often booked as one 2 to 6 hour block, and for some roles a final call with a VP or other senior leader.

That is roughly 3 to 7 stages depending on the role. Glassdoor puts the average hiring process at 22 days, with role averages from 7 to 49 days. In 2021, engineering candidates reported two screen options: a take-home project (reported at 2 to 8 hours) or a Coderbyte assessment (about 1.5 hours). Take-home candidates then reviewed the code live with an engineer (30 minutes in one 2022 report), and the onsite mixes technical and behavioral sessions.

The technical sessions repeatedly cover pair debugging and optimizing provided code, API and data-model design from a product scenario, and React UI work. A 2025 Staff report says there were no pointless leetcode exercises or gotchas. Go-to-market roles often include a presentation, case or mock discovery call, and one 2024 enterprise sales report lists SVP Sales, CRO and CEO interviews.

Many reports, mostly from candidates who did not get an offer, mention slow communication and little or no feedback after rejection, while several accepted-offer reports praise responsive recruiters. Modern Health publishes company values on its careers page and in job postings, but it does not publish an interview evaluation framework or say how the values are scored. For that reason no framework is listed here. Most engineering reports date from 2021 to 2022.

Stage 1:

Application or recruiter outreach

varies

Glassdoor reporters: 58 percent applied online, 20 percent came through a recruiter, 19 percent through an employee referral and 3 percent through a recruitment agency. Engineers describe recruiter outreach on LinkedIn or job platforms. Speed varies by role and recruiter.

Stage 2:

Recruiter screen

about 30 minutes

Covers work experience and role expectations; one senior engineer report says the call also covered the company, the role and the interview process. Several reports say recruiters kept candidates informed of next steps.

Stage 3:

Hiring manager or engineering manager call

30-60 minutes

Reported at 30 minutes for client success, operations and account executive roles, and 45-60 minutes for a renewals role. Engineering candidates have reported a phone screen with an engineering manager, with no length given.

Stage 4:

Engineering assessment: take-home project or Coderbyte

about 1.5 to 8 hours

In 2021, candidates were offered a choice: a take-home (reported at about 3 hours, 2-6 hours, up to 6 hours, or 2-8 hours depending on effort) or a Coderbyte assessment (about 1.5 hours). Not every engineering report shows this step: one Nov 2021 candidate described an engineering manager phone screen followed by a four-interview virtual onsite and mentioned no assessment, and one Feb 2021 senior candidate had a tech screen where they shared a repo from their portfolio. A 2025 Staff report names Coderbyte and Figma as interview tools but does not describe a take-home.

Stage 5:

Take-home review with an engineer

about 30 minutes

An engineer reviews your submitted code with you over screen share. The 30 minute figure comes from one 2022 senior report; other reports give no length. Engineering roles only.

Stage 6:

Non-engineering exercise: skills assessment, case, project or presentation

varies

Length varies by role. Reported formats: a 30-45 minute skills assessment (renewals), a 1 hour Zoom presentation (client success), a presentation to a Director (enterprise sales), a mock discovery call (mid-market AE), a take-home (care operations), a case study a finance candidate said took 10+ hours, and a case that took a marketing candidate several days. Not every role has one: an SDR report and a digital producer report say there was no assignment. Order varies: in the enterprise sales and enterprise client success reports the presentation came after the panel.

Stage 7:

Virtual onsite or panel

about 2-6 hours

Often booked as one block. Engineering: reported at 4-5 hours, or as four interviews (two technical, two soft), mixing coding or debugging, app or API design, a PM sync and behavioral sessions. One 2021 senior report describes a technical day followed by a behavioral day. Data science (2021): 5 hours, including live modeling and ML system design. Go-to-market and operations: 2-3.5 hour panels, commonly 30 minutes with each cross-functional panelist. A 2023 product manager report describes a 4-6 hour day with little break, and a 2022 clinical role report describes a 5 hour team interview.

Stage 8:

Senior leadership or final interview

about 30 minutes

Not every role has this stage. Reported as a 30 minute call with a VP (client success, clinical role) or a 30 minute final interview (renewals). One 2024 enterprise sales candidate went on to SVP Sales, CRO and CEO interviews, with no lengths given.

Stage 9:

References and offer

varies

Some candidates were asked for two or three references, or had a reference check before the offer. Glassdoor's average for the hiring process across all roles is 22 days, with role averages from 7 to 49 days.
