01 / For every CVS Health candidate
The process, start to finish.
CVS Health hires across retail pharmacy (CVS Pharmacy stores), insurance (Aetna), pharmacy benefits (CVS Caremark), primary care (Oak Street Health) and corporate and tech roles. This playbook covers the track the company is best known for: retail pharmacy and store roles (pharmacy technician, pharmacist, store associate and store or pharmacy management).
The official careers site describes five steps: search jobs, apply, review (some roles may require a virtual job tryout), interviews (which may include a phone or video interview), and offer. Its FAQ calls the Virtual Job Tryout (VJT) a step in the interview process, says it is launched from Candidate Home after the application is complete, and mentions a background check and pre-hire paperwork.
Coaching sources add, with some disagreement between them: an online VJT for most in-store and pharmacy roles, a short recruiter phone screen or recorded video screen, a 30 to 60 minute behavioral interview with the store or pharmacy manager, an extra round with a district manager or panel for some candidates (management candidates in one source), and a background check plus, for pharmacy roles in one source, a drug screen.
CVS publishes no stage durations, no first-hand candidate reports are among the sources, and total-length estimates range from about 1 to 2 weeks up to 2 to 4 weeks (one source cites about 20 days from Glassdoor data, another says sometimes over a month). Interviews are mostly behavioral and situational: upset customers, insurance and prescription problems, patient confidentiality, catching errors, prioritizing during a busy shift, and availability for evenings, weekends and holidays.
CVS publishes four company values on its official purpose page (We care, We innovate with purpose, We are accountable, We prioritize safety and quality). CVS does not publish them as an interview scoring rubric, and its own FAQ says hiring decisions consider experience, job related skills and interview performance, but the values are the closest official framework and one coaching source recommends preparing a story for each.
One coaching source says corporate and tech roles may add a technical screen or take-home assignment; those tracks are not the focus here.
Stage 1: Online application
varies (one source: recruiter call within 3-7 business days)
Apply through jobs.cvshealth.com, which uses a Workday candidate portal; the official FAQ says status shows under Candidate Home, My Applications, and CleverPrep advises using one email address throughout. Review time depends on location, role and recruiter workload; CVS publishes no official timeline. One coaching source says qualified applicants usually get a recruiter call within 3 to 7 business days; no other source gives a figure.
Stage 2: Virtual Job Tryout (online assessment, some roles)
20-60 minutes per JobTestPrep; 30-45 minutes per ClimbTheLadder
Official site says some roles may require a virtual job tryout as part of the application, and its FAQ calls it a step in the interview process launched from a Candidate Home task in Workday after the application is complete. ClimbTheLadder says it applies to most in-store and pharmacy roles. JobTestPrep and ClimbTheLadder list the sections: working with customers and colleagues (situational judgment), what drives you, your story, your approach, and Ensure Quality (spotting discrepancies between prescription details and a medication bottle picture), plus a Fill Prescriptions math section for pharmacy technicians. JobTestPrep describes it as not timed overall but says responding too slowly can hurt the score. One source reports that failing blocks reapplying for six months; this is not confirmed on official pages. Sources differ on order: JobTestPrep, ClimbTheLadder and SkillScouter put it before the store interview, while The Interview Guys mention a brief online assessment for some positions under their assessment and background check section, after the interview sections, without stating an order.
Stage 3: Phone screen or recorded video interview
15-30 minutes (15-20 per The Interview Guys, 20-30 per CourseTake for technicians)
Official site says next steps may include a phone or video interview. Coaching sources describe a short recruiter call covering availability, schedule flexibility and basic qualifications; some candidates instead get a HireVue recorded video interview. Not every candidate gets this step: SkillScouter and Yoodli say it may happen, and sources do not say which roles skip it.
Stage 4: Hiring manager interview (store manager, pharmacy manager or pharmacist-in-charge)
30-60 minutes (30-45 per two sources, 45-60 per one)
Usually the first real interview, in store or by video, mostly behavioral and situational questions. Pharmacy roles may include both the store manager and the pharmacist-in-charge.
Stage 5: Additional round: district manager or team panel (some candidates)
about 1 hour panel, or several 30-minute one-on-ones
The Interview Guys say management candidates often have a second round with a district or regional manager. Yoodli describes either a 1-hour panel with several team members or a few one-on-one interviews of about 30 minutes each. Sources do not say which roles include this round, so treat it as role and level dependent.
Stage 6: Background check and drug screen (plus technician licensing)
1-3 weeks (per one source, for background check and licensing)
The official FAQ mentions background checks and pre-hire paperwork but does not say when they happen or mention a drug screen. ClimbTheLadder says a background check is conducted before a final offer becomes official, with scope varying by role and location. The Interview Guys say offers are contingent on a background check and, for pharmacy roles, a drug screen. Yoodli says a pre-employment drug test is standard (typically urine, run by a third-party lab) but not every location tests every employee, and JobTestPrep lists a drug test after the store interview and before the offer. CourseTake lists background check and licensing together for technicians.
Stage 7: Offer
varies
Official site says an offer is extended if selected, and its FAQ says candidates receive an email asking them to review the offer in Candidate Home and that job offers will not be included in a chat or email directly. Timing varies by role and by whether a location is actively hiring: ClimbTheLadder says hourly store roles often move within 1 to 2 weeks when a location is actively hiring and corporate roles take longer. Overall estimates differ by source: a decision within 1 to 2 weeks (The Interview Guys), hearing back within 1 to 2 weeks (SkillScouter), 2 to 3 weeks (JobTestPrep), 2 to 4 weeks (CourseTake), about 20 days (a Glassdoor average cited by one source), or a few weeks and sometimes over a month (Yoodli).

02 / What CVS Health scores
The framework.
CVS Health values (company values from the official purpose page, not a published interview scoring rubric)
01
We care
02
We innovate with purpose
03
We are accountable
04
We prioritize safety and quality
Source: https://www.cvshealth.com/about/our-people/our-purpose.html, which lists the purpose "To simplify health care one person, one family and one community at a time" and exactly four values, each written with a closing period on the page (We care. We innovate with purpose. We are accountable. We prioritize safety and quality.); item names are given here without the closing period.
The same four values appear on jobs.cvshealth.com/us/en/life and, with the same one-sentence descriptions, in CVS Health's 2026 proxy statement, which says the company aligned around a new ambition, purpose and set of values in late 2025. CVS does not state that interviewers score candidates against them: the official hiring FAQ says hiring decisions consider experience, job related skills and interview performance, and CleverPrep (which recommends preparing one short true story per value) does not claim values-based scoring either.
Read the rest of the framework notesShow less
CleverPrep's question list is a flat list with no value labels; the four value tags on questions here are an editorial mapping from the official one-sentence value descriptions (compassion, listen and adapt, fulfill commitments, safety and quality at the center) and from CleverPrep's own "what CVS Health looks for" wording, not a mapping CVS publishes. Older material is not used as the framework.
CVS job postings dated 2023 to 2025 appear to carry boilerplate saying Heart At Work Behaviors support the company purpose, without listing them. Two pages on The Interview Guys conflict with each other and with the official pages: one lists six behaviors (put people first, rise to the challenge, join forces, create simplicity, inspire trust, champion safety and quality), which no public source confirms are the Heart At Work Behaviors, and another claims five values (collaboration, innovation, caring, integrity, accountability) are used to score candidates. Neither appears on the current official pages, so the five-value scoring claim is treated as outdated and unverified.
03 / Coach's notes
Coach's tips.
01
Treat the Virtual Job Tryout as a real interview round: CVS calls it a step in its interview process and launches it from a Candidate Home task in Workday after you finish the application. CleverPrep advises checking that page soon after applying and setting aside quiet time to finish it. JobTestPrep says it is untimed overall but responding too slowly can hurt the score, and describes an Ensure Quality section that asks you to spot discrepancies between prescription details and a medication bottle picture; technicians also get a Fill Prescriptions math section. JobTestPrep, ClimbTheLadder and SkillScouter put it before the store interview, but sources do not agree on the order.
02
Know which CVS Health business the posting sits in (CVS Pharmacy, Aetna, CVS Caremark, Oak Street Health, MinuteClinic) and tailor your examples to the patients, members or clients it serves, as CleverPrep advises.
03
Prepare one short true story for each of the four current values (We care, We innovate with purpose, We are accountable, We prioritize safety and quality), as CleverPrep recommends. CVS does not say interviewers score against them. Two Interview Guys pages list other value sets (six behaviors on one, five values on another) that do not match the four on the official pages; use the current wording from cvshealth.com.
04
For pharmacy roles, expect questions on catching errors and discrepancies, patient privacy, insurance coverage problems, and a prescription that is not ready for a frustrated patient; prepare a true example for each.
05
Be ready to state your availability clearly and positively: the pharmacist question in MockQuestions says the pharmacy is open evenings, weekends and most holidays, and The Interview Guys say the recruiter phone screen covers availability and scheduling flexibility.
06
Offers come through the Workday Candidate Home portal. The official FAQ says job offers will not be included in a chat or email directly, and CleverPrep says CVS Health never asks applicants to buy their own equipment or pay to apply and never emails from a service such as Yahoo or Gmail; treat any message that does either as a scam.
