01 / For every Marqeta candidate
The process, start to finish.
Marqeta is a modern card issuing and payment processing platform, and it is best known for hiring software engineers to build and run that API platform, so this playbook covers the software engineering track (backend, full stack and test engineering) with a secondary section on SQL and data roles. Product management and go-to-market tracks exist but are thinly documented publicly. Marqeta does not publish an interview rubric, a scoring scale, or a description of its interview loop.
Its official careers page does publish five company values, and its official interview-prep blog post confirms that interviews are run remotely as "virtual on-sites" and that its recruiting team will share interviewer names and LinkedIn profiles in advance and run practice sessions on request. Those values are reproduced below as the closest thing to a published framework, with the caveat that Marqeta nowhere states it scores candidates against them.
The publicly reported shape of the process is: recruiter screen, a technical or coding screen, a hiring manager conversation, and a virtual onsite loop mixing coding, system design and behavioral rounds. One coaching source puts the end-to-end process at about 2 to 4 weeks.
Reported round counts differ by role and level: unverified search-result excerpts from a Glassdoor page mention as few as three onsite rounds, while the one detailed candidate account cited here describes a five-round loop for a senior test engineering role that also included a take-home framework design assignment. The three-round figure should be read as unconfirmed rather than corroborated.
Content from several major aggregators (Glassdoor, Comparably, InterviewQuery, Indeed, 1point3acres) is not reflected here, so corroboration is thinner than the raw number of sources suggests. Confidence here is medium: the general process shape (recruiter screen, technical screen, onsite loop) is corroborated across multiple official, coaching and candidate sources with explicitly stated variance, but no individual question is confirmed by two independent sources and the round-count conflict is unresolved, so confidence stops short of high.
Stage 1: Recruiter screen (video or phone)
varies
Reported as an initial phone or video screen with a recruiter covering background, motivation and fit. Length is not stated by any public source, and it likely varies by role, level and individual recruiter rather than following a fixed script. Marqeta's own blog says recruiters share the names and LinkedIn URLs of upcoming interviewers and will run a practice session on request, so this is the stage to ask for both. One coaching source puts the whole process at roughly 2 to 4 weeks.
Stage 2: Technical / coding screen
varies
Reported in two forms: a HackerRank coding assessment, and a live technical discussion by phone. One candidate reported an LRU cache problem and a medium string plus hashmap problem here, with the interviewer expecting full class and data structure implementation rather than just the method body. Format and length appear to vary by role and by interviewer; no source states a duration.
Stage 3: Take-home assignment (some roles)
varies
Reported by one senior test engineering candidate as a take-home framework design exercise (API-based or UI-based) issued before the onsite, then discussed in the loop. Only one source reports it, and it appears to be role-specific (test engineering) rather than universal, so treat it as possible rather than expected. No source states how long candidates are given to complete it.
Stage 4: Hiring manager interview
varies
A conversation with the hiring manager covering scope, responsibilities, past project experience and, for test roles, testing strategy. Duration is not stated by any source and likely varies by role, seniority and how much scope discussion the hiring manager wants to cover. Sources disagree on placement: one coaching source puts it before the loop, one candidate report puts it as a round inside the loop.
Stage 5: Virtual onsite loop
varies
Marqeta officially calls these "virtual on-sites" and runs them remotely under its Flexible First model. Round count varies by role and level: one senior test engineering candidate reported five rounds (framework and CI/CD, technical deep dive on the take-home, pair programming, product and team fit, hiring manager), while another described it simply as a virtual loop with several interviewers. The one round length stated by any source is a 45 minute pair-programming round, in which that candidate got the Trapping Rain Water problem. Behavioral rounds in the loop were described by that same candidate as standard team-fit questions.
Stage 6: Additional director round (sometimes added)
varies
One candidate reported that after the onsite went well, Marqeta added one further technical round with a director before deciding. Single report, so treat it as a possibility that can extend the timeline rather than a standard stage; whether it recurs by role, seniority level, or is simply discretionary cannot be determined from one report, and no duration is stated.
single-source
Stage 7: Decision and offer
varies
One candidate reported that HR usually follows up the next day when the interview has gone well. No public source states a formal offer or debrief SLA, and timing likely varies by role, level and internal approval steps rather than following a fixed timeline. Marqeta's blog advises candidates to send thank-you notes to the panel and to ask the recruiter for feedback if not selected.

Marqeta company values

Win as a Team
02
Make it Count
03
Solve for the Customer
04
Do What's Right
05
Simplify and Innovate
These five item names are the ones Marqeta publishes on its official careers page at https://www.marqeta.com/company/careers, which presents them as the company's values. The list matches that page word for word and is complete (exactly five items, no additions or omissions). Marqeta does not publish an interview rubric, competency model, or scoring scale, and it does not state anywhere public that interviewers score candidates against these values, so this is a values list rather than a confirmed evaluation framework.
It is still the best public signal of what Marqeta says it cares about, and a Marqeta employee posting on Blind said culture fit weighs heavily in the decision alongside technical performance. Links between questions below and values are conservative: only questions that unmistakably probe one value are linked to it, and most behavioral questions are linked to none rather than to a stretched match.

For the same reason, the functionality/security/usability trade-off question is not linked to Do What's Right, whose published text is about responsible business disruption, not engineering trade-offs. Marqeta's own blog separately names STAR (spelled out exactly as "Situation, Task, Action, Resolution" on Marqeta's own page, a nonstandard fourth word), SOAR and CAR as answer-structuring methods candidates use, but those are answer formats, not evaluation criteria.
