01 / For every Genentech (Roche) candidate
The process, start to finish.
This guide covers research scientists, the track Genentech is best known for: Scientist, Senior Scientist, Associate Scientist, Senior Scientific Researcher and Postdoctoral Fellow roles, mostly in South San Francisco (one 2012 postdoc report names the gRED research organization). The pattern across candidate reports from 2007 to 2026 stays broadly the same.
First come one to three short screening calls with a recruiter or HR and the hiring manager, usually about 20 to 30 minutes each (one 2012 postdoc report describes a first call of about an hour). Then comes an onsite or virtual day built around a 30 to 60 minute research seminar, followed by many back-to-back 30-minute one-on-ones or small panels with scientists, directors, postdocs and HR.
Some reports describe a 1.5 to 2 day visit with group lunches or a dinner. Total time varies a lot: some candidates report 3 to 4 weeks, many report 1 to 4 months, and others report 6 months (2010) and 10 months (a 2025 postdoc). Several candidates describe long waits after the onsite. Genentech's own careers FAQ says only that the recruitment process varies by location and position and that recruiters invite matching candidates to an initial interview.
Roche's global application guide (Genentech is a Roche company) adds the general flow: HR review, hiring manager review, a 30-40 minute phone or video interview, up to five onsite interviews depending on location and position, and a consensus decision. Non-research tracks look different.
A Global Clinical Trial Leader report describes mostly behavioral and situational questions, and data science and ML roles add technical rounds, such as a one-hour R session with multiple-choice questions on data manipulation, or a mix of stats and ML concepts (Teamblind previews, partly truncated). Roche publishes three company values (Integrity, Courage, Passion), a Roche Denmark country page says hiring looks for candidates who will live them, and Genentech's 'Our Promise' page names inclusivity, integrity and creativity.
No page presents any of these as an interview evaluation framework or competency list, and neither Genentech nor Roche publishes one, so no framework is included.
Stage 1: Online application and HR / hiring manager resume review
HR review within the first few days per Roche; time to first contact varies
Genentech's careers FAQ says People & Culture reviews your resume and profile after you apply, and that the recruitment process varies by location and position. Roche's global guide says HR reviews the application against job requirements, then passes matches to the hiring manager. Genentech candidates report anything from about a week (one applied through a recruiter) to 4 months before first contact. One postdoc was contacted 4 months after applying; one scientist got a phone interview 4 weeks after applying. One referred Associate Scientist went straight to a phone interview, skipping the usual phone screening. A 2025 postdoc report describes an application with a CV and a choice of postdoc mentors, then a one-way video interview, and 10 months in total before the one-day interviews and an outcome.
Stage 2: Recruiter / HR screen
About 30 minutes in one 2025 report (Roche states 30-40 minutes for phone or video interviews)
A phone or video call (Google Meet in a 2026 report). It covers your CV, technical qualifications, career opportunities, culture and some behavioral questions. In some loops it comes before the hiring manager call, in others after. One 2026 report says the hiring manager call followed a couple of weeks later.
Stage 3: Hiring manager / PI screen
About 20-30 minutes; one 2012 postdoc report says about an hour
Technical discussion of your CV and the job description. For postdocs, the PI and the candidate mostly describe their research to each other. Some candidates had two or three screens with different hiring managers before the onsite invitation, and one 2018 report describes a 30-minute screen with a hiring team of about six people. Some were invited to the onsite at the end of this call. The one-hour figure comes from a 2012 postdoc report of a first phone interview whose interviewer is not named.
Stage 4: Research seminar (job talk)
About 30-60 minutes including Q&A
Often opens the onsite or virtual day. You present your research to roughly 8 to 25 scientists, postdocs and staff from the department and related ones. Candidates describe methods questions starting early (two slides in for one Associate Scientist) and one postdoc said they were grilled on all of their slides. Reported lengths are 30 minutes (a May 2018 Senior Scientific Researcher), 40-45 minutes, 45 minutes or 1 hour; one 2018 postdoc report shows a 10:00 to 11:15 slot. One Senior Scientist report (posted 2023, interview in June 2020) says there was no chalk talk. One February 2021 postdoc report describes a full virtual day over Webex.
Stage 5: One-on-one and panel interviews
30 minutes each; usually a full day (about 6-8 hours), sometimes 1.5-2 days
Back-to-back 30-minute one-on-ones (or two-on-ones and small panels) with scientists, senior scientists, directors, postdocs and collaborators, sometimes including a department VP. Reported counts range from about 4 to 15, with 7 to 8 in a January 2020 postdoc report, nine in a May 2018 report and up to 25 in a 2007 report. Group lunches, and in some reports a dinner, are part of the day. One 2022 candidate said interviewers often repeated questions.
Roche's global guide says on-site interviews are 'up to five, depending on location and position', fewer than most Genentech research reports of about 8 to 15 half-hour sessions
Stage 6: HR conversation and references
varies
Some candidates finish the onsite day with an HR interview. For postdocs this can be the HR person who runs the postdoc program. One candidate summarized by Interview Query had a separate HR conversation about salary after the hiring manager discussion and before the research rounds. One 2010 candidate was asked for letters of recommendation after the onsite. Whether this happens, and when, depends on the role and the year.
Stage 7: Consensus decision and offer
Up to two weeks per Roche; candidates report about 1-2 months, sometimes longer
Roche says decisions are made by consensus and can take up to two weeks after interviews. Genentech research candidates report a 2016 Senior Scientific Researcher decision after 6 weeks, feedback a month after the onsite, a postdoc rejection two months after the onsite, and a 2025 postdoc who heard nothing for months until following up and receiving a rejection.
Roche's official two-week decision window is much shorter than what Genentech candidates report
