01 / For every Expedia candidate

The process, start to finish.

Expedia Group is best known to job seekers as a travel technology employer, and almost all public interview evidence covers software engineering (SDE intern, SDE I/II), so this playbook covers that track. Expedia's official interview guide describes three parts: a skills and experience assessment (for certain roles, a technical assessment, business case or work sample), a cultural assessment that compares your work style with the Expedia Group Behaviors, and behavioral interviews modeled on the STAR technique.

The guide gives no stage lengths and says timing varies by position and team. Expedia's early-careers page adds that applicants are invited to an online strength-based assessment and a skills-based assessment, and that final-round candidates have two virtual interviews covering specialized and behavioral skills.

Candidate reports and prep sites describe the experienced-hire engineering loop as a recruiter screen, a HackerRank online assessment (early-career candidates may also get a strengths or situational test first), a technical or hiring manager phone screen, and then a final loop of about 3 to 4 interviews: data structures and algorithms coding, system or low-level design, and a behavioral or hiring manager round.

Stage counts differ by source: TechPrep says 4 to 5 stages, one 2025 US SDE II report describes 3 rounds, one Gurgaon SDE II report describes 4 interviews, and intern and campus reports describe an online test followed by 2 to 3 interviews. Reported end-to-end times run from about 3 to 4 weeks (Interview Kickstart, one 2025 US report) up to 4 to 8 weeks (TechPrep). Expedia publishes its values as the five Behaviors.

The official guide ties the cultural assessment to them, and Expedia's technology careers page says interview questions are competency and strength-based, based on the five Behaviors. Most available first-hand reports are from India campus, intern and SDE-2 hiring, and Glassdoor reports are not among the sources.

Stage 1:

Recruiter screen

15-30 minutes

Covers your background, interest in Expedia, and what the role expects. The recruiter also sets up the later interviews and tells you who you will meet. The 15-30 minute figure comes from TechPrep. A 2025 US SDE II report also describes a standard recruiter phone screen. The campus and off-campus drive reports from GeeksforGeeks start at the online test and describe no separate recruiter screen.

Stage 2:

Cultural / strengths assessment (reported as an online situational test)

45-60 minutes

Expedia's guide lists a cultural assessment that compares your work style with the Expedia Group Behaviors, but it does not say what format it takes. Expedia's early-careers page says suitable applicants are invited to an immersive online strength-based assessment and a skills-based assessment. Prep sites (TechPrep, Graduates First) call it the Cappfinity strengths test and describe an automated situational judgment test that acts as an early filter; Expedia's own pages never name Cappfinity. One intern reported 20-25 situational questions where every option looked right and advised answering in line with the company's values. The 45-60 minute figure comes from TechPrep and one Graduates First article; the FAQ in that same article says most versions are untimed.

Official early-careers page confirms a strength-based assessment; TechPrep lists it for the general SDE loop. The SDE II reports (US 2025, Gurgaon) do not mention it, so it is not confirmed for experienced hires. Length is contested (45-60 minutes vs untimed). The official guide numbers the skills assessment before the cultural assessment, while TechPrep and the intern report put the strengths or situational test before the coding test.

Stage 3:

Online coding assessment (HackerRank)

60-120 minutes

Usually 2 to 4 easy-to-medium coding problems. Some versions add multiple-choice questions on OOP, databases, operating systems or output tracing. Reported time limits: 75 minutes (Interview Kickstart), 60-90 minutes (TechPrep), 90 minutes (several GeeksforGeeks reports) and 2 hours (one Dec 2020 report). Expedia's guide says some roles get a technical assessment as part of the skills assessment, and its early-careers page lists a skills-based assessment. An Expedia graduate-program blog says candidates generally have an online assessment such as HackerRank or HireVue.

Stage 4:

Technical phone screen or hiring manager call

30-60 minutes

TechPrep describes a live 60-minute screen: a resume or project deep dive, one coding problem, and Big-O questions. A 2025 US SDE II report instead had a 30-minute hiring manager call at this point. Algo.monster says there can be one or two phone screens. A 2018 Gurgaon SDE II report describes two Skype rounds with two coding questions each. The campus and off-campus drive reports go from the online test straight to technical interviews.

Stage 5:

Final loop: data structures and algorithms coding rounds

about 45-60 minutes each

Usually 1 or 2 coding rounds on a shared editor or HireVue. Expect arrays, strings, linked lists, trees and heaps, with interviewers asking for working code and optimal time and space. Algo.monster puts onsite rounds at about 45 minutes, and reports cite 45-minute (HireVue) and 1-hour (Dec 2020) rounds. One Gurgaon SDE II report (Dec 2022) had two DSA rounds, then system design and hiring manager rounds.

Round count conflicts: TechPrep and algo.monster say 3 to 4 final interviews, while Expedia's early-careers page says final-round candidates have two virtual interviews (specialized and behavioral skills) and intern reports describe 2 to 3 interviews.

Stage 6:

Final loop: system design or low-level design round

varies

Length depends on level and team. TechPrep says SDE I and new-grad candidates often get object-oriented or low-level design rather than full distributed-systems design. A Gurgaon SDE II report had a system design round, and an intern reported an OOP design discussion such as a travel application. Prompts lean toward the travel domain: booking, pricing and availability, payments, lodging search. TechPrep says some 2026 candidates also got a scenario-based incident investigation round.

Stage 7:

Final loop: behavioral / hiring manager round

varies

The official guide says behavioral interview questions are rooted in prior experiences and modeled on STAR. It ties only the cultural assessment, not the behavioral questions, to the Behaviors, but Expedia's technology careers page says interviewers ask competency and strength-based questions based on the five Behaviors. Hiring manager rounds also dig into a current or past project and the technical choices behind it. One intern report (HireVue) gives 45 minutes. Others give no length, so treat it as varying by team. Campus loops may run this as an HR or managerial round with CS fundamentals mixed in.

Stage 8:

Decision and offer

about 2 days to 1 week after the final round

The official guide says your recruiting partner keeps you posted after the interviews and that the timeline varies because positions and teams differ. Expedia's early-careers page says your recruiter reaches out with the hiring decision. Interview Kickstart says you usually hear back in about a week. Candidate reports cite a call about a week later and a rejection email two days later. Reported totals: 3-4 weeks (Interview Kickstart, a 2025 US report), three weeks (a 2018 Gurgaon report), 4-6 weeks (a company-wide FAQ on Graduates First, not specific to early careers) and 4-8 weeks (TechPrep).

  3. 03

    Operate with Excellence

  4. 04

    Ownership Mindset

  5. 05

    Succeed Together

These are the five Behaviors from the "Living our Behaviors" section of Expedia's official interview guide (careers.expediagroup.com/interview-guide); Expedia's technology careers page lists the same five and calls them "these five Behaviors". The guide says a "Cultural assessment in relation to our Behaviors" compares your work style with them, and that behavioral interviews are modeled on the STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action, Result), with guiding questions under each letter but no sample behavioral questions.

The guide does not tie the behavioral questions to the Behaviors; the technology careers page does, saying interviewers ask competency and strength-based questions based on the five Behaviors. The official one-line descriptions: Traveler First, putting the traveler first in every action and decision. Think Big, being ambitious, seeing opportunities others do not, and quickly taking bold bets that create long-term value. Operate with Excellence, being tenacious and driving improvements day after day.

Read the rest of the framework notes

Ownership Mindset, looking at the business as if it is your own and thinking beyond your role and metrics. Succeed Together, collaboration and candor, which means challenging directly, debating hard, disagreeing when necessary, then committing fully to deliver as one team. Expedia does not publish a scoring rubric that maps questions to Behaviors. Four CleverPrep questions plus the reliability question carry Behavior labels from CleverPrep itself (a third-party prep site).

The two teamwork questions marked Succeed Together are tagged by inference from the official description (collaboration, disagreeing, then committing). CleverPrep's incident questions carry no Behavior label, so none is assigned.
