01 / For every Etsy candidate
The process, start to finish.
This playbook covers Etsy's software engineering track, the role family with the most public interview coverage. Etsy does not publish a stage-by-stage interview process. Its careers page on AI in hiring gives a short outline: live interviews are video conversations (candidate screens and behavioral interviews), some roles get non-technical assignments, and coding and technical assessments are virtual and live and are meant to mirror the work of the role. It asks candidates to avoid AI tools in live interviews.
Its People page says hiring teams use a skills-based rubric tied to Etsy competencies that it does not name, keep interview questions and their order consistent across candidates, and train panel members. Third-party prep sites describe a longer flow. It starts with a 30 minute recruiter screen and a live technical screen of about 60 minutes. TechPrep names HackerRank and describes a two-part practical exercise of fixing bugs and adding features in a small codebase (Python, PHP or JavaScript).
Other guides describe a medium algorithm or data structure problem, and some mention debugging a Flask app. The virtual onsite is described as about 4 to 5 hours and mixes coding or debugging, system design (with marketplace and relational database emphasis), a deep dive on a past project, a values/behavioral round and a hiring manager conversation, but guides disagree on the exact mix.
Sources put the total at 3 to 7 rounds over roughly 3 to 6 weeks, depending on team and level. Etsy publishes five guiding principles (We commit to our craft, We minimize waste, We embrace differences, We dig deeper, We lead with optimism). None of the Etsy pages cited here says they are used to evaluate candidates, and the competencies behind the hiring rubric are not named, so no evaluation framework is recorded here. Public evidence is thin.
Glassdoor, Indeed and 1point3acres candidate reports are not among the sources, and most sources are prep sites that do not tie individual questions to a named candidate or report.
Stage 1: Recruiter screen
about 30 minutes
Background, interest in Etsy and its mission, compensation expectations, location and level calibration. One source gives 30 to 45 minutes. InterviewPal calls it a recruiter or hiring manager call, and Orbyt puts a hiring manager interview second. Etsy's own AI-in-hiring page describes a candidate screen as a conversation to learn about Etsy and the role, with preliminary questions to decide whether to move forward.
Stage 2: Technical screen (live coding)
about 60 minutes; TechPrep says 60 to 90 minutes
A live video session. Only TechPrep names HackerRank and describes a two-part practical exercise: fix bugs and add features in a small existing codebase (Python, PHP or JavaScript). CleverPrep and InterviewPal say it may include debugging a Flask app or data structure operations such as linked lists or priority queues. Final Round AI, TechInterview and CleverPrep describe a medium algorithm or data structure problem. Etsy's own page says its coding assessments are virtual, live and meant to mirror the work of the role. A 2019 Blind post (Seller Add team) reported a 45 minute phone interview, and a 2021 software engineer post said the recruiter told the candidate algorithm prep was not needed.
Stage 3: Technical assessment for senior and staff roles
2 to 4 hours
Take-home or live exercise, possibly building a small marketplace feature.
Single source; not confirmed elsewhere.
Stage 4: Virtual onsite: coding and debugging rounds
45 to 60 minutes each
CleverPrep lists two to three coding rounds for software engineers and two for senior engineers, and TechInterview lists two. Final Round AI's loop has no separate coding round, and InterviewPal lists a coding round plus a pair programming task. They range from an algorithm and data structures problem to debugging existing code, working with APIs or implementing a feature. Only CleverPrep states the per-round length. Code quality and communication are weighed alongside correctness.
Stage 5: Virtual onsite: system design
varies
Varies by level and source: one source gives 60 minutes for senior candidates; others give no duration. One source says the round is for senior roles, while TechInterview lists it in the loop without tying it to a level. Sources stress marketplace problems (search ranking, recommendations, messaging, payments) and relational database details such as schema design, partitioning and replicas.
Stage 6: Virtual onsite: technical or project deep dive
45 to 60 minutes
Walk through a complex past project and defend tradeoffs, alternatives considered and technical debt. TechPrep gives 45 to 60 minutes and CleverPrep gives 60 minutes for senior candidates. One source calls it a craft deep dive; another frames it as a code review or technical deep dive.
Stage 7: Virtual onsite: values and behavioral
45 to 60 minutes
Collaboration, ownership and alignment with Etsy's mission. Only CleverPrep states the length. TechPrep says it is often run by someone outside the immediate team. Some loops include a cross-functional interviewer. Etsy's own page lists behavioral interviews as assessing skills, experiences, problem-solving and teamwork.
Stage 8: Hiring manager interview
about 45 minutes
Team fit, career goals and project alignment. Only CleverPrep states the length. Some sources place it inside the onsite loop; Orbyt places it second, right after the recruiter screen.
Stage 9: Decision and offer
about 1 to 2 weeks after the final round
Final Round AI says offer decisions arrive within 1 week of the final loop; Orbyt and the CleverPrep company page say 1 to 2 weeks. A 2021 Blind poster in a senior non-technical role reported waiting almost a month with no update, so that report does not cover engineering. Whole process: 3 to 6 weeks and 3 to 7 rounds (TechPrep), 3 to 4 weeks (TechInterview, Orbyt), 3 to 5 weeks (Final Round AI, PracHub).

Roles are grouped by the category each question fits, not by the source. Switching roles is part of Interview Prep, included with Career. The counts show what each role holds in the full set.
Sample question, Practical coding and debugging
Debug a small existing web application (for example a Flask app): find and fix the bugs, then add the requested features.
Tests reading unfamiliar code, tracing a fault to its cause and extending a small web app.
Sample question, System design and databases
Design a search ranking system for Etsy's listings, where most inventory is unique or handmade.
Tests ranking and retrieval design when each listing is unique and has little engagement history.
Sample question, Project deep dive
Walk us through a complex project you worked on, the decisions you made, the alternatives you considered and the tradeoffs.
