01 / For every Cigna candidate

The process, start to finish.

The Cigna Group operates through Cigna Healthcare and Evernorth Health Services, and Evernorth is home to Express Scripts. Its US careers site lists hiring areas such as Customer Service & Claims, Medical & Pharmacy, Technology, Finance and Operations. Cigna publishes one hiring-process description for its US careers site and does not split it by track, so this playbook follows that general flow and adds question sets for software engineering and data science roles because CleverPrep has role pages for them.

The official How We Hire page lists four steps: Explore and Apply (some roles include an assessment or a conversation with an AI recruiting agent), Recruiter Interview, Interview(s) with the hiring team, and Decision (an offer from the recruiter, then a drug screen and background check once the candidate accepts, then onboarding).

Cigna's recruitment-fraud page says the company typically holds 2-4 interviews, including at least one in-person or video interview, and that the process typically begins with a phone or video conversation with its Talent Acquisition team. The How We Hire page says candidates may meet one, two, or five or more team members. One Blind reply (2022) about a tech role says Cigna has no standard process, and that a recruiter screen plus one half-day remote or onsite round is typical.

Third-party guides describe mostly behavioral questions answered in STAR format, technical rounds for tech roles, a group day for some software engineering positions and a super day for leadership programs; Cigna's own pages do not describe the group day or the super day. Cigna publishes five company values on its About Us page but does not present them as interview criteria, and it publishes no interview evaluation framework, so no framework is listed.

Candidate-report sites (Glassdoor, Indeed, AmbitionBox, Interview Query) are not among the sources, so every sample question here comes from third-party prep guides (How2Become, CleverPrep), not from verified candidate reports, and CleverPrep labels its role-specific items as question patterns.

Stage 1:

Online application

Confirmation email within 24 hours; review can take several weeks

Apply on the Cigna careers site. The FAQ says recruiters review every application individually, that you should get a confirmation email within 24 hours, and asks candidates to allow 1-3 weeks for a status follow-up. How We Hire says reviewing all applicants may take several weeks. Candidates can check status by logging in to their candidate account.

Stage 2:

Assessment or AI recruiting agent conversation

varies
Some roles only

Cigna's How We Hire page, under the Explore and Apply step, says some roles may include an assessment or a conversation with an AI recruiting agent. It does not say which roles, what the tool is, how long it takes, or where it falls relative to the recruiter interview, so the length and format depend on the role and are not published. A third-party guide (CleverPrep) lists aptitude tests, HackerRank coding challenges for tech roles, or situational judgment tests, depending on the role, and gives no duration.

Not used for every role

Stage 3:

Recruiter interview (phone or video)

About 30 minutes (third-party estimate); Cigna says it can take 1-3 weeks after applying to learn whether you have moved on to the interview stage

Cigna says that if you are selected you discuss your work experience and skills related to the position, and that the process typically begins with a phone or video conversation with its Talent Acquisition team. The FAQ mentions a phone screen where you may share additional materials with the recruiter. The 1-3 week figure on How We Hire is the wait to find out whether you advance to the interview stage after you submit your application. CleverPrep (general, software engineer and data scientist pages) puts the call at 30 minutes, covering background, salary expectations and interest in healthcare, with the recruiter explaining Cigna's structure and the team.

Stage 4:

Hiring team interviews

varies

An Interview Scheduling team coordinates these, and you meet the key decision makers for the role. Cigna says candidates may meet one, two, or five or more team members depending on the role's size and scope, and that it typically holds 2-4 interviews, at least one of them in person or on video. CleverPrep describes 2-4 interviews with hiring managers, team members and possibly senior leadership, which may be behavioral, technical or panel. For software engineering it lists a 45-60 minute technical screen and a 60-90 minute panel; for data science it lists a 60-minute technical screen, a 2-4 hour take-home or live case study and a 3-4 hour panel. A Blind reply about a tech role describes a screen plus one half-day remote or onsite loop. The number, length and content of rounds vary by role, seniority and team, and Cigna publishes no durations.

Format and length depend on the role

Stage 5:

Group day or super day (some positions)

2-3 hours for the software engineer group day (third-party estimate; the same page's description says 3 hours); otherwise varies

CleverPrep's software engineer page says that for some positions the final round is a group day: a group setting with other candidates, a technical assessment, team collaboration exercises and a final hiring manager conversation. CleverPrep's general page says leadership programs may include a super day with multiple interviews. Cigna's own How We Hire page and the early-career program pages cited here do not describe this stage, and no source gives a super day duration.

Third-party only; applies to some roles

Stage 6:

Decision and offer

varies

If selected, the recruiter extends the offer. Cigna says candidates who are not selected will still hear from the company. Timing is not stated officially and depends on the role and team. CleverPrep says the whole process averages 24 days but does not say how it measured this.

Stage 7:

Pre-employment checks and onboarding

varies

After you accept the offer, the pre-employment team contacts you to start the drug screen, and a background check is also run; the page then says your team contacts you to welcome you and explain next steps. Cigna does not state how long the checks take. Cigna has a tobacco-free policy: in the states it lists (for example Alabama, Florida, Texas and Washington State), it may decline to hire self-identified nicotine users unless they enter a qualifying cessation program before their start date.

A tag is the condition given in brackets in the stage name.
