01 / For every Chewy candidate
The process, start to finish.
Chewy hires for fulfillment, pharmacy, veterinary, customer service and corporate roles. This playbook covers the corporate technology track (software engineering, plus some data and analytics roles), because that is the track with the most public interview detail. Chewy's careers site gives only a general outline.
It says the number of interviews and the process length depend on the department, scope and level of the role, that some roles add case studies, assessments or portfolio reviews, and it encourages candidates to reflect on how their experience lines up with the Operating Principles and to answer in STAR format (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
Candidate reports from 2019 to 2025 describe a recruiter screen, sometimes a HackerRank assessment (reports range from a 10 to 15 minute Java quiz to a timed coding test), a technical screen of about one hour, sometimes a hiring manager call, and a final virtual loop of about four 45 to 60 minute sessions. The loop covers coding (data structures and algorithms), system design, a debugging and unit-testing round, and behavioral questions tied to the Operating Principles.
The mix and order of steps vary by team, level and year. One prep site puts it at 3 to 6 rounds, usually done in under three weeks. Candidates on Blind often describe the behavioral side as Amazon-style, and in one Data Engineer report each interviewer probed specific principles. Chewy publishes its Operating Principles on its careers site, and the current page lists seven.
An older ten-item list still appears on Chewy's customer service careers page, and third-party guides use earlier names. Customer service roles follow a separate official process: an online assessment of about 25 minutes, then a phone interview with recruiting, then paperwork and a background check. Glassdoor, Indeed, Interview Query and Dataford are not among the sources, so the question evidence leans on Blind threads, Taro reports and smaller prep sites.
Stage 1: Application and resume screen
varies
Apply through the careers site or a job board. Chewy says you get an automated confirmation email, the recruiting team reviews each application, and candidates whose qualifications match are contacted by a recruiter. No duration is published, and Chewy says response times may vary for high-volume roles. For campus roles, intern and co-op applications typically open in early January.
Stage 2: Recruiter screen
25 to 35 minutes
Phone or video call about your background, availability, why you want Chewy, and a high-level look at your technical experience. The 25 to 35 minute figure comes from TechPrep. One Blind poster called the recruiter call standard. Campus candidates may have 1 to 2 rounds of initial screening with a recruiter and/or someone from the business. One intern guide reports about 30 minutes.
Stage 3: HackerRank online assessment
varies
Not used by every team, and its position in the sequence varies. A 2019 Blind post titled for Boston describes a 10-minute Java trivia test before the phone screen. An April 2021 Blind post describes 15 minutes of Java trivia questions. A separate June 2021 Blind post describes 10 easy multiple-choice questions, and Interview Kickstart describes a 10-minute Java multiple-choice quiz. An intern guide describes 10 to 12 questions mixing Java concepts with coding problems. A December 2024 Taro report instead describes a HackerRank coding test after the phone screen, and TechPrep gives 60 to 90 minutes when it is a timed coding assessment. Length depends on the team and on whether the test is a quiz or a coding assessment.
team-dependent
Stage 4: Technical screen
about 60 to 90 minutes
Live coding with an engineer or tech lead over HackerRank or Zoom CodeShare, often one easy-to-medium LeetCode-style problem. Some screens are object-oriented, and a January 2025 Taro report describes a HackerRank problem on 2D arrays. Some add behavioral questions: a February 2025 Taro report describes one LeetCode-style question plus two behavioral questions, and a 2021 Blind poster describes a one-hour phone screen with about 30 minutes of Java trivia and one easy LeetCode problem. Front-end oriented screens can include basic JavaScript questions (a Blind commenter) or a few React questions (Taro, December 2024). One Blind commenter was asked for an extra technical interview before the final panel. One Data Engineer III candidate was told the screen would cover only Operating Principles but got coding instead. Blind posts give about one hour, and TechPrep gives 60 to 90 minutes.
Stage 5: Hiring manager conversation
varies
Some loops include a separate round with the hiring manager or the team, by Zoom or on site. Checkr says candidates who advance may complete one or more interviews with the hiring manager or team, and a February 2025 Taro snippet describes a hiring manager discussion about past experience before the virtual loop. Blind posts mention a manager round after the phone screen (Data Engineer) and a first Zoom round with the hiring manager (SDE, April 2024). Whether it happens, and when, depends on the team and the role. No duration was stated.
not in every loop
Stage 6: Final loop (virtual onsite)
about four sessions of 45 to 60 minutes each
Usually four back-to-back interviews with engineers, a tech lead and a hiring manager. Rounds reported: data structures and algorithms, system design (high-level and low-level, or database schemas and API endpoints), a debugging, extend and test round, and behavioral. Taro reports from December 2024 and January 2025 describe four one-hour sessions, and a February 2025 report describes four panel rounds (coding, behavioral, debugging, JavaScript/React); one adds a meet-the-team culture-fit conversation. Behavioral questions can come up in any round, and in at least one Data Engineer loop each interviewer covered specific Operating Principles. On system design, one Blind commenter says SE I candidates also get it, while another says a design interview applies to SE III and above. Shorter processes are reported too: a Taro snippet describes a technical and a behavioral interview of 45 minutes each (Boston, April 2024), and an intern guide describes a recorded video interview plus two 45-minute rounds.
Stage 7: Debrief and decision
a few business days, per one report
In one Data Engineer report, the interviewers met afterwards to decide whether the candidate raised, met or lowered the bar. One Blind commenter on an SDE2 thread says Chewy commits to giving a result within a few business days. Chewy publishes no decision timeline; its careers page says only that candidates who are not selected are notified once a decision has been made.
single-source duration
Stage 8: Contingent offer and background check
3 to 5 business days for the background check
Selected candidates receive a contingent offer of employment. After accepting it, they are asked to authorize a background check run by a third-party consumer reporting agency, which typically takes three to five business days. It can take longer depending on the number of counties, court record processing, manual verification and previous-employer response times.

Shape the Future
These are the seven principles listed at careers.chewy.com/us/en/operating-principles, which presents them as the framework behind Chewy's character, capabilities, ingenuity and operations. The official Interviewing at Chewy page calls the Operating Principles the foundation of Chewy's culture, encourages candidates to reflect on how their experience aligns with them, and recommends answering in STAR format.
One 2021 Data Engineer report says each interviewer focused on specific principles and that the bulk of the interview centered on an Operating Principles PDF supplied by the recruiter; that report predates the current names. A 2023 Blind commenter tagged as Chewy says only one interviewer in their loop really focused on principles, so the split varies by loop. The list has changed.

Chewy's own customer service careers page still shows an older ten-item list (Customer First, Deliver Results, Earn Trust, Operate At Depth, Accelerate Time, Act Like An Owner, Debate Openly; Commit Fully, Build High Performing Teams, Keep It Simple, Think Big), and TechPrep cites five of the older names. The current page shows no date. Candidates should prepare against the current seven.
