01 / For every Adyen candidate

The process, start to finish.

Adyen is a Dutch payments company. Its offices page lists Amsterdam as headquarters and San Francisco, Sao Paulo and Singapore as regional headquarters, and names many local offices including Bengaluru, Chicago and Madrid; it does not say which offices hire engineers. The candidate reports used here come from Amsterdam (2020), the Netherlands with no city given (2025), Bengaluru, Madrid and Chicago, plus one 2025 US report that only mentions the Chicago office. One candidate calls Amsterdam the main tech centre.

This playbook covers software engineering, mostly Java backend roles, because the available candidate reports come almost entirely from that track. Adyen says the skills step is either a technical test or a case study presentation depending on the role, and it does not publish which roles get which. Commercial and other non-engineering loops are not covered here. Adyen publishes its hiring process on its careers FAQ in six stages, and says the order of interviews may vary slightly: 1.

Application review 2. Recruiter screen 3. Team interview 4. Skills assessment (a technical test or a case study, depending on role) 5. Leadership interview 6. Final interview with a member of the Management Board or Global Leadership team Adyen's Knowledge Hub adds that for some roles steps three and five (the team interview and the leadership interview) are reversed. The FAQ says the process takes a little over a month on average.

Job postings say about 4 weeks and that the company is office-first, with no remote-only roles. Engineers report a different order than the FAQ. Most describe an online assessment, usually HackerRank, right after the recruiter call. One 2020 Amsterdam report used Codility. One 2025 Netherlands report lists a programming assignment (format not stated) after two interviews, reviewed in a final interview, and one 2025 Chicago report describes a timed coding test followed by a review session.

In the 2020 Amsterdam, 2024 Bengaluru, 2025 Madrid and 2025 US reports (one of them from Chicago), engineers then go through the assessment code, sometimes in the same sitting as a system design discussion, before the leadership conversations. The 2026 Bengaluru reports instead describe a separate live coding (DSA) round, then system design, then leadership conversations, and they do not mention an assessment review.

The timeline below is stitched together from partial reports of different years and regions, so treat the order as indicative. Adyen publishes an evaluation framework, the Adyen Formula: eight principles that its recruiters tell candidates to study and link to their own experience.

Stage 1:

Application review

within 5 business days (stated target)

Official FAQ and engineering job postings say Adyen aims to respond within five business days. The FAQ cites a 30-day wait before reapplying for the same position. One 2026 Bengaluru candidate who reapplied after a rejection was told there is a 6-month cool-off, so ask your recruiter which rule applies.

Stage 2:

Recruiter screen

15-30 minutes

Background, current role and tech stack, why Adyen, relocation (why Amsterdam or Madrid) and compensation. Candidates describe it as a getting-to-know-you call. Reported lengths are 15 minutes (2025 Madrid) and 30 minutes (2022 Madrid, 2026 Bengaluru); TechPrep also says about 30. In one 2022 Madrid report the intro call was with a team member, not a recruiter. In the 2025 Netherlands report the first interview listed was a quick conversation with the team lead, and the 2025 Chicago report lists a brief recruiter call followed by a team lead conversation.

Stage 3:

Online assessment (usually HackerRank)

1 to 3 hours

This is the 'skills assessment' on the official FAQ, which says it is either a technical skills test or a case study presentation depending on the role. Engineers take it in Java, usually within a few days of the recruiter call. Recent reports (mostly Bengaluru) describe 2 problems in 60 to 120 minutes, sometimes including a task that calls an HTTP endpoint and parses the result; a 2024 Bengaluru report had 3 problems in 2.5 hours. Madrid reports (2022 and 2025) describe 3-hour HackerRank tests mixing SQL, Java implementation tasks and a Java OOP skeleton with failing unit tests; a second 2025 Madrid report describes a payment-system task with a card-count-in-last-ten-seconds method. The 2020 Amsterdam test was a 3-hour Codility test with bug fixing, an easy algorithm, SQL and a Java Streams question. The 2025 Chicago report mentions a timed coding test without a length. One 2025 Netherlands report lists a programming assignment (format not stated) after two interviews, and TechPrep lists a take-home as an alternative to HackerRank.

Stage 4:

Team / technical review of the assessment

about 1 to 1.5 hours

Usually two engineers. They go through your assessment code: why you chose that approach, the data structures, the complexity, and how it behaves under concurrent use. Expect Java fundamentals and a past-project deep dive, and sometimes system design or security topics. The length is 1 hour in the 2020 Amsterdam and 2025 Chicago reports (the Chicago session was with engineers from different teams) and 1.5 hours in a 2024 Bengaluru report where the same sitting also covered a payment service provider design; the other reports give no length. A Blind reply says the review is now combined with system design. In the 2025 Madrid reports a separate Zoom round with two team members came first in one case and covered experience, adaptability, conflict handling and learning mindset. One 2025 Chicago candidate waited about 3.5 weeks after submitting the test, partly because of a company-wide offsite. Some candidates are rejected at this stage even after passing every test. Adyen's FAQ describes the team interview as a conversation about the role, your experience and ways of working and does not mention an assessment review, so placing this round under that official step is an inference from candidate reports.

Reported in the 2020 Amsterdam, 2024 Bengaluru, 2025 Madrid and 2025 US reports (one from Chicago); one 2025 Netherlands report describes a programming assignment reviewed in a final interview; the 2026 Bengaluru reports describe a live DSA round and do not mention this review

Stage 5:

Live coding (DSA) round

70-75 minutes

Two engineers (described as senior in one report) set two problems (medium, sometimes one hard); candidates often finish only one. Problems cited include tree diameter, backtracking, a TreeMap lookup, DFS on graphs and DP.

Reported in Bengaluru loops from 2026; European reports describe a review of the assessment instead

Stage 6:

System design

55-60 minutes

Two engineers, sometimes in person. Prompts are often in the payments domain (design a payment service provider) but not always (ticket booking, car pooling, a campaign reward). Interviewers go step by step: requirements, entities, APIs, then the high-level design, tracing each request through every component. In some loops this is folded into the assessment review round.

Stage 7:

Leadership interview

varies

No candidate report gives a length, and it varies by team, level and region. The official FAQ says this is with a leader from the team you are interviewing for, focused on your motivation. One Bengaluru candidate had it in person with the Head of Engineering and the hiring manager: standard behavioral questions (proudest project, disagreements, stakeholders, why Adyen). That candidate believes not using STAR structure cost them the offer. One aggregator (TechPrep) lists a separate 45 to 60 minute behavioral round scored against the Formula and a closing leadership conversation without a length; no candidate report confirms either figure.

Stage 8:

Final interview (Management Board or Global Leadership)

about 30 minutes (single report)

The official FAQ says this is with a senior executive from the Management Board or Global Leadership team. The 30-minute figure comes from a single 2020 Amsterdam report (a board member), and that candidate was told about the round but was rejected before reaching it. Bengaluru candidates describe a Global Leadership round run by someone from an overseas team, covering culture fit; the 2026 L4 candidate was rejected before reaching it. A 2025 Chicago candidate who received an offer describes a final behavioral interview with an SVP, with no length given, and a 2025 US report lists a Board round at the end of its process but the candidate did not reach it.

  4. 04

Winning is more important than ego; we work as a team - across cultures and time zones

  5. 05

We don't hide behind email, instead we pick up the phone

  6. 06

We talk straight without being rude

  7. 07

We seek out different perspectives to sharpen our ideas

  8. 08

We create our own path to grow toward our full potential

The eight principles are copied from https://careers.adyen.com/formula, which states there are eight. The count, order and wording match the page, and the only change is that the curly apostrophe in "don't" is rendered as a plain ASCII apostrophe. Adyen's recruitment team says to learn all eight principles, connect them to your own experiences, and ask interviewers how they see the Formula in practice. The careers FAQ lists learning about the Formula as a preparation step.

Candidate reports describe culture-fit and behavioral questions, and an anonymous Blind reply tagged as an Adyen employee advises studying the Formula for behavioral questions. One aggregator (TechPrep) describes a separate behavioral round scored against the eight principles, but no candidate report confirms a scored round. Adyen does not publish a scoring rubric beyond the principles themselves.
