01 / For every Standard Chartered candidate

The process, start to finish.

Standard Chartered hires through two main routes. Early Careers covers apprenticeship, internship, graduate and Insight programmes across its business areas, which the bank's careers navigation lists as Corporate & Investment Banking, Wealth & Retail Banking and Ventures. Experienced Hire covers lateral roles. This playbook covers the Early Careers route because it is the best documented and most searched. Experienced-hire stages are included as flagged entries.

According to the bank's current Early Careers pages, selection runs: online application with CV upload, an online Skills Insight Assessment (behavioural plus timed reasoning), a Coding Simulation for technology roles only, a Workplace Scenarios one-way video interview, an Assessment Centre, then offer. That is three assessed stages after the application, or four for technology roles. The bank says there may be minor variations by market and programme.

A separate official Valued Behaviours Assessment (VBA) page, still live and undated, describes a different early stage: Pymetrics games followed by the VBA, which that page says is not required for roles in Korea, France, Germany or the United States. The Skills Insight Assessment page now sits at the old Pymetrics web address, which suggests it replaced the games, but no official page says so, so the VBA flow is shown as a flagged older or market-specific entry.

Experienced hires may get a telephone screen with the Talent Acquisition Partner, then a VBA (timing and assessment types vary by team), then a competency-based interview of about 60 minutes. Standard Chartered publishes three valued behaviours: Do the right thing, Never settle and Better together. These are treated as the evaluation framework. The experienced-hire page says its VBA helps the bank understand how consistently you demonstrate them; the current Early Careers assessment pages do not name them.

The bank publishes no interview question bank. The sample questions below come mostly from coaching sites, plus Indian on-campus technology write-ups from 2019 and 2020. Glassdoor and similar candidate-review sites are not drawn on. Third-party estimates of the whole process range from four weeks to about ten weeks and are unverified.

Stage 1:

Online application (CV upload)

varies

Find a role, upload a CV and follow the guided application. The official tips say to apply on a laptop or desktop and keep the CV to two pages. You must choose one business area per application. Most roles recruit on a rolling basis, and some have deadlines or close early. The FAQ says vacancies outside Africa and the Middle East open on 1 July and typically close by February, and in Africa and the Middle East open on 1 January and close on 30 April, while the graduate programme page lists applications opening August to September. You must wait 6 months from your original application date before reapplying. Timing varies by role, market and time of year.

Stage 2:

Skills Insight Assessment (online)

About 60 minutes; 14 days from the invitation to complete

The first assessment stage. A behavioural section (untimed, 15-20 minutes recommended) asks you to select the behavioural skills that describe you. A timed reasoning section of 36 minutes covers scenarios, patterns and sequences, numerical calculations and logical conclusions, and it cannot be paused. The FAQ says AI is not used here: the system scores responses against preset criteria and the result is compared with a threshold set in advance by people. Everyone gets a feedback report, and the bank says you hear back on next steps within a couple of days. The tips page says only 'a few days' to complete online assessments, so follow the deadline in your invitation email.

Stage 3:

Coding Simulation

45-85 minutes depending on the role
Technology roles only

Only for technology roles. Done in one sitting with no pause, on a laptop or desktop. The FAQ says AI automatically evaluates programming ability, and for some roles AI-based proctoring flags potential violations. Candidates below the set level do not progress. A 30-minute practice test is available.

Technology roles only

Stage 4:

Workplace Scenarios (one-way video interview)

About 20 minutes; per question 1 minute to prepare and 2 minutes to record

Assesses motivation for applying and other key skills. The FAQ says you are presented with four scenarios and asked one question about each. Content includes videos and reading. You get one chance to re-record each answer, and the second attempt is final. A member of the Early Careers team reviews the responses, and AI is used only for device checks. After you submit, the full application is reviewed, and the bank warns this can take a few weeks.

Stage 5:

Assessment Centre (final stage)

varies

Format varies by role and market. It may include interviews with HR and the hiring team, group or collaborative exercises, and a work simulation. It can be virtual or in person, and preparation details arrive about a week before. Assessors look at how you think, communicate, work with others and solve problems. TARGETjobs describes a half-day in-person event, but the bank publishes no duration. The outcome comes within two weeks of the centre.

Stage 6:

Offer and hiring

varies

Successful Assessment Centre candidates move to the offer stage. Timing varies by market and programme. Official pages disagree on programme dates: the FAQ says programmes commence on 1 September each year, while the graduate programme page lists a July start.

Stage 7:

Older Early Careers flow: Pymetrics games, then Valued Behaviours Assessment (VBA)

VBA: five days from the invitation email to complete; the bank says it replies within 48 hours of submission

A separate official page, still live and undated, says that if your Pymetrics games evaluation matches the role, you are invited to the VBA. You are shown scenarios reflecting everyday situations at the bank and asked to evaluate the available responses. Applications are withdrawn if the VBA is not done within five days. The page says candidates for roles based in Korea, France, Germany or the United States are not required to take it. It gives the reply time as both 48 hours and two days. It does not mention the Skills Insight Assessment or say what the VBA measures. A May 2026 third-party guide still describes this sequence, so it may apply in some markets.

Stage 8:

Experienced hire: telephone screen and Valued Behaviours Assessment

varies

After a CV review you may be invited to a telephone screening, a conversation with the Talent Acquisition Partner leading the hiring project. The online assessment stage is a Valued Behaviours Assessment, which the page says helps the bank understand how consistently you demonstrate its Valued Behaviours. Some questions may ask about your work style. The page says timing, deadlines and assessment types vary by team, and it gives no completion window for this route.

Stage 9:

Experienced hire: competency-based interview

About 60 minutes

Virtual or in person. Typical structure: introductions (about 3 min), role overview (about 5 min), your career summary (about 5 min), skills and competency questions (about 35 min), your questions (about 10 min). Job-related assessments may be added depending on the role. The page says to expect a response within 10 business days at the latest after your interview, followed by an offer and pre-employment checks for successful candidates.

02 / What Standard Chartered scores

Valued Behaviours

  1. 01

    Do the right thing

  2. 02

    Never settle

  3. 03

    Better together

Item names are copied from the official culture page (sc.com/en/about/standard-chartered-culture), which lists exactly three under 'Our valued behaviours'. That page defines Do the right thing as acting in the best interests of clients, colleagues and stakeholders. Never settle is the constant pursuit of excellence and market-leading innovation. Better together is building relationships with clients and each other to share unique capabilities. The official VBA page also names three: do the right thing, never settle and better together.

The experienced-hire page names them in recruitment as Never Settle, Do the Right Thing and Be Better Together, and says its Valued Behaviours Assessment helps the bank understand how consistently you demonstrate them. The VBA page itself does not say what the assessment measures or how it is scored. The current Early Careers Skills Insight Assessment pages do not name the behaviours.
