01 / For every Runway candidate
The process, start to finish.
Runway is the New York based generative AI video company (formerly reached at runwayml.com, which now returns a permanent redirect to runway.com). This playbook covers the engineering track (software, ML and research engineering) because nearly all public interview material describes it.
It is not the whole company: as of October 2026, about 12 of roughly 50 listings on Runway's careers page sat under Engineering and Research, and the rest were in sales, support, marketing, product, design and operations, for which no public interview material was found apart from a short PM section from one aggregator. Runway does not publish its interview process or an evaluation framework.
Its careers page gives the mission ("We are building AI to simulate the world through merging art and science"). The job postings embedded in that page say only that pay depends on qualifications assessed during the interview process, and a few non-engineering postings (Creative Producer and Support roles) say candidates will use the Runway product during the process and ask applicants to build a custom workflow in place of a cover letter. So no evaluation framework is listed here.
Third-party prep sites broadly agree on this outline: a recruiter screen of about 30 minutes, a live coding screen of about 60 minutes in Python or TypeScript, then a virtual onsite. The onsite has coding rounds (algorithms and data structures, object-oriented design and data modeling, sometimes code review), a domain-specific system design round, a deep dive on a past project, and a behavioral round.
Typical system design themes are video generation pipelines, GPU resource management, credit billing and large media files. Research candidates reportedly add a paper discussion, and one estimate-based guide mentions meetings with senior leaders. The sites differ on round order and count (DesignGurus says both vary by role and team) and on total time (about 3 weeks, 2 to 4 weeks, and 4 to 5 weeks).
The only dated firsthand account found is one ML Engineer candidate (Aug 2025), who had two 45-minute phone screens: ML coding (an n-gram model), then ML system design (video search). Most other detail comes from prep sites that cite no primary sources (TechInterview was published May 2026 and updated July 2026, JobMentis shows an October 2026 update, TechPrep is undated), and one of them (Extern) is an internship guide whose dates are self-described estimates, so treat it all as indicative.
Several coding and system design entries below are themes that prep sites report, not exact prompts, and JobMentis tags its questions as asked by a candidate without explaining how that is verified. Several unrelated companies share the name (Rent the Runway, a financial planning software company called Runway Financial). Check that any review you read is about the AI video company.
Stage 1: Recruiter screen
about 30 minutes
Background, motivation for Runway and generative AI, role fit, logistics. Several prep sites describe this the same way. TechPrep and Extern give the 30 minute figure; the other pages give no length.
Stage 2: Hiring manager chat (some candidates)
varies
Only DesignGurus lists this, as a chat some candidates report that covers role fit, past work and expectations. No other source mentions it and no source says what decides whether it happens, so the length and who gets it are unknown.
single source
Stage 3: Technical screen (live coding)
about 60 minutes (45 to 60 in some reports)
Live coding in Python or TypeScript; TechPrep names CoderPad. TechPrep says clean, production-quality code matters; DesignGurus says working code with clear reasoning. JobMentis describes LeetCode-medium problems under time pressure. TechPrep also says candidates in 2026 noted AI assistants such as Cursor or Copilot may be permitted. ML candidates may get ML coding instead: one Aug 2025 ML Engineer candidate had two 45-minute phone screens, ML coding then ML system design.
Stage 4: Virtual onsite: coding rounds
varies
TechPrep lists two coding rounds: algorithms and data structures at medium to hard level, plus object-oriented design and data modeling. TechInterview also lists two onsite coding rounds without detail. JobMentis lists a single onsite coding round (LeetCode-hard, debugging). DesignGurus says some candidates report a code review round where they read and improve existing code. Extern (an internship guide with estimated dates and no cited sources) lists pair programming and code review and estimates half a day to a full day for the whole onsite. No source gives per-round lengths. DesignGurus says round order and count vary by role and by team.
Stage 5: Virtual onsite: system design (product or ML)
about 1 hour
Domain-specific prompts: video generation pipelines, GPU resource management, credit billing, large media files. ML candidates may get ML system design instead. The one hour figure comes from one DesignGurus article only. Placement differs by source: JobMentis lists system design as its third round, before its onsite coding round.
Stage 6: Virtual onsite: craft deep dive on past work
varies
TechPrep describes a presentation or deep technical discussion of a complex project you built, where interviewers probe architectural decisions, tradeoffs and how you handled scale or complexity. DesignGurus frames it as the hardest problem you solved and the choices you made. TechInterview names the round without detail. No source gives a length.
Stage 7: Virtual onsite: behavioral
varies
Reported focus: ownership, creative taste and customer empathy for creative professionals (TechPrep, TechInterview), plus collaboration, feedback and pace (DesignGurus). JobMentis lists ownership, influence and conflict resolution. No source gives a length.
Stage 8: Research paper discussion
variesResearch roles only
Research candidates reportedly discuss a paper. Extern adds deep learning fundamentals and a PyTorch coding screen, and places these in the technical assessment; DesignGurus and TechInterview do not say where the paper discussion sits in the loop. No source gives a length.
Stage 9: Leadership meeting
varies
Only Extern lists this: conversations with senior leadership or co-founders about culture, vision and research direction, estimated at 30 to 60 minutes. That guide covers an internship cycle Runway does not formally advertise, calls its dates informed estimates, labels its calendar funnel as expected, and cites no source for this stage. No other source mentions it. Treat it as unconfirmed.
single source
Stage 10: Overall timeline
about 2 to 5 weeks
Sources disagree: about 3 weeks (DesignGurus), 2 to 4 weeks (Extern, which cites a Glassdoor average of 20 days but gives 80 interviews in one place and 97 in another), and 4 to 5 weeks (TechPrep, TechInterview). DesignGurus says the loop is about five to six conversations; the TechPrep and TechInterview stage lists add up to seven (recruiter screen, coding screen, five onsite sessions).
A tag is the condition given in brackets in the stage name.
Reported interview time, one scale in minutes
Where the minutes go
- Recruiter screen~30 min
- Technical screen~60 min
Not drawn: Hiring manager chat, Virtual onsite: coding rounds, Virtual onsite: system design, Virtual onsite: craft deep dive on past work, Virtual onsite: behavioral, Research paper discussion, Leadership meeting and Overall timeline, whose durations are not given in minutes.

Sample questions, by category.
Roles in the full set
Roles are grouped by the category each question fits, not by the source. Switching roles is part of Interview Prep, included with Career. The counts show what each role holds in the full set.
Sample question, Coding and ML coding
Implement an n-gram model (a class with fit and generate methods), then explain how you would select the best n.
Tests language-model basics: counting n-gram frequencies, sampling from them, and choosing n with held-out evaluation.
Sample question, System design
Design a scalable video search system, covering both the model and the infrastructure.
Tests retrieval design: embedding models, vector indexing and serving latency for text-to-video and video-to-video search.
Sample question, Behavioral, motivation and project deep dive
Tell me about the hardest problem you have worked on.
