01 / For every Resend candidate
The process, start to finish.
Resend is a developer-facing email platform (email API, SMTP, React Email templates) backed by Y Combinator, a16z and SV Angel, running as a fully remote team across the Americas and Europe. This playbook covers the track Resend is best known for and hires most of: product and backend engineering on email infrastructure, plus the adjacent product design and customer success engineering roles listed on its careers page.
Resend publishes its hiring process openly in its company handbook, which is unusually good primary evidence: the documented pipeline is an introduction call, an async take-home challenge, a technical interview with the hiring manager and one or two peers, a two-part cultural interview (30 minutes with the COO or Chief of Staff, then 45 minutes with three peers), a founders conversation, reference calls, and an offer. Resend does not publish a scored interview rubric.
It does publish four company beliefs (\"Do work that inspires others\", \"No ego\", \"Keep shipping\", \"Default to action\") that the cultural stage is explicitly built around, and those are listed here as the framework with that caveat. Question evidence is much thinner than process evidence: no source publishes word-for-word Resend interview questions, and the handbook says the cultural interview has no script by design.
The sample questions below are drawn from the one third-party interview guide that lists prompts and topics, plus the scope Resend itself documents for each stage and role. Treat them as representative subject matter, not transcripts.
Stage 1: Application via resend.com/careers
varies
Roles are posted by region (Americas or Europe) and routed through Ashby. Openings cluster in Engineering, Design, Customer Success, Sales and Operations, all fully remote. Duration varies by how actively the specific role is being sourced.
Stage 2: Introduction call (recruiting logistics, then Role Owner)
varies
Recruiting runs a short logistics call covering process, location requirements and compensation, so both sides know early whether it makes sense to proceed. You then speak with the Role Owner, the team member leading hiring for that position, as a mutual get-to-know conversation. The handbook states no fixed length.
Stage 3: Take-home challenge (async)
3 to 5 days to submit; reviewed within 3 working days
Turnaround depends on the role and the task. Candidates are added to a shared Slack channel with the Resend team to ask questions while working on it. Resend states the goal is to see not only how you think but how you execute.
A third-party guide describes the work sample as paid and roughly 3 to 4 hours. Resend's own handbook says neither, so treat payment and time budget as unconfirmed.
Stage 4: Technical interview
varies
Depending on the role, the call includes the candidate, the hiring manager and one or two peers. Content is role-dependent: email infrastructure and distributed systems for backend and MTA roles, product and interface craft for product engineering.
Stage 5: Cultural interview (two parts)
30 minutes with the COO or Chief of Staff, then 45 minutes with 3 team peers
Deliberately unscripted so the conversation feels natural. Resend frames it as checking both directions: that the person adds to the culture and that Resend is the right culture for them. It watches for signals of technical or cultural misalignment and positive indicators in how you communicate and the way you work.
Stage 6: Meet the founders
varies
A conversation with the founders about company vision and culture, and a chance for the candidate to ask about direction and the team. No stated length.
Stage 7: Reference calls
varies
Resend asks for at least two references, typically one manager or supervisor and one peer or colleague, to understand work history.
Stage 8: Offer
varies
Final discussion of compensation, stock options and benefits. Posted engineering ranges on current listings are 150,000 to 170,000 USD, with a 2,000 USD home office allowance, 20 PTO days, unlimited sick days, 12 weeks family leave and an annual in-person retreat.

02 / What Resend scores
What we believe
01
Do work that inspires others
02
No ego
03
Keep shipping
04
Default to action
These four items are published by Resend in its public handbook under "What we believe" (intro line: "Principles that dictate how we think, behave, and make decisions."), worded exactly as on that page, which lists these four and no others. Important caveat: Resend publishes them as company beliefs, not as a named interview rubric, and it publishes no scored evaluation criteria or competency ladder.
The connection to hiring is that the handbook's hiring page describes an unscripted cultural interview aimed at understanding a candidate's values and motivations, and at spotting signals of fit in how you communicate and the way you work. So the beliefs are the best public proxy for what the cultural stage tests, but no source says interviewers score against them item by item.

Note: the resend.com/about page paraphrased these as "five core principles" including an added "async-first teamwork" item, but the dedicated beliefs page itself lists exactly four; the about-page phrasing is treated as loose paraphrase, not a fifth official item.

Sample question, Email infrastructure and deliverability
Design an email delivery pipeline that keeps deliverability high, including per-domain reputation management, separate IP pools by customer tier, gradual IP warm-up, and throttling of sends per receiving domain.
Tests email deliverability system design: IP reputation, pooling by tier and per-domain throttling.
Sample question, Systems design, APIs and reliability
Design webhook delivery with retries and strong delivery guarantees: durable queue, exponential backoff with jitter, dead-letter handling and signed payloads.

Sample question, Coding and product craft
