01 / For every Postman candidate

The process, start to finish.

Postman is an API development and testing platform company, and this playbook covers the track it is best known for: software engineering (backend, frontend and fullstack product engineering), which is where nearly all public candidate reporting sits. Postman does not publish a named interview rubric or a stage-by-stage careers page describing its loop (its careers FAQ path returns a 404 and its blog has no careers-tagged posts describing the loop).

It does publish five company values on its careers page, and its engineering blog states that its hiring framework "focuses on the traits and values that we look for in candidates (rather than the skills), and assigns evaluations of those traits and values across various interview rounds", so those published values are used here as the framework and are marked as such.

A separate, more recent official source, an April 2026 first-person blog post by a Postman engineering hiring manager, gives the most detailed account of an actual current loop among the sources cited here: a three-stage process (an untimed take-home task with a follow-up pairing code-review session, a system design conversation, and a behavioral conversation) that the post frames as his own redesigned process for the Codegen team specifically, not a declared company-wide standard, so it is treated here as a valuable but team-specific and time-bound data point alongside the older candidate-reported loop below.

Publicly reported loops run roughly three to five rounds: an online assessment for interns and new grads, a technical fundamentals interview, a timed machine-coding round that is usually API-shaped, a system design round, a non-coding problem-solving round, and a hiring manager or culture-fit conversation (not every report includes every stage). Reported end-to-end duration is about two to four weeks in one coaching write-up and about one month in a candidate report.

Most detailed round-by-round reports come from India-based intern, SDE-1 and SDE-2 processes between 2020 and 2022, so recency and level coverage are uneven. Product management and go-to-market tracks exist but are not covered here; the sources available do not document them.

Stage 1:

Online assessment (HackerEarth or HackerRank)

varies

Reported for intern and new-grad pipelines: three coding problems spanning easy, medium and hard, plus 17 multiple-choice questions on databases, OOP and networking. One report notes negative marking on some MCQs. Experienced-hire reports do not mention this stage, so whether it appears varies by level and pipeline (campus or off-campus versus experienced hire). No source states a time limit.

Stage 2:

Technical fundamentals interview

about 45 to 50 minutes

Projects walkthrough plus rapid-fire fundamentals: HTTP and networking, databases, operating systems, and JavaScript or Node.js. One candidate reports the interviewer steered toward JavaScript and Node.js rather than the candidate's own Java, blockchain and ML projects. Called a fundamentals round in one SDE-2 report. The 45 to 50 minute figure comes from two intern-level reports; length at senior levels is not stated.

Stage 3:

Machine coding round

45 minutes in one backend report; varies otherwise

Build something small and working, then walk the interviewer through it and answer questions on the code. Reported prompts are API- or data-store-shaped: a REST API for nested comments, a Twitter-style comment section, a PickleDB clone. The 45 minute figure is stated only in the backend off-campus report; the prompt itself varies by track (backend versus frontend, where React work is reported).

Stage 4:

System design round

varies

Reported as mostly high-level architecture with follow-on scalability discussion. No source states a duration. Depth and who runs it varies by level: one SDE-2 report calls it mostly high-level, while a coaching write-up separates 'Technical Interviews (1-2)' from a distinct System Design/Problem-Solving stage, implying the split depends on the loop.

Stage 5:

Problem-solving round without coding

varies

One backend candidate reports an interview with no code written at all: the interviewer asked problem-solving questions and the candidate explained the approach and dry-ran it, covering two problems. An SDE-2 report lists a separate problem-solving round with an open-ended elevator business question. No duration is stated and this round does not appear in every report, so its presence varies by team and level.

Stage 6:

Hiring manager and culture-fit conversation

varies

Background, projects, internships and way of working with the engineering manager, plus a managerial or HR conversation in coaching write-ups. Postman's own blog says traits and values are evaluated across rounds rather than concentrated in one, so expect values probing earlier too. A separate, more recent (April 2026) hiring-manager blog post describes a distinct 'Behavioral' stage for the Codegen team specifically, framed around mutual fit and what genuinely excites the candidate rather than scripted values-checking, showing this stage's design varies by team and era. No duration stated for any version.

Stage 7:

Total loop

about 2 to 4 weeks in one coaching write-up; about one month in one candidate report

Round count is reported as roughly three to five: a coaching guide states 'Typically 3-5 rounds', and candidate reports range from four (SDE-2 backend, 2020 intern off-campus) to five (backend off-campus, frontend Bengaluru, and one intern report on the coaching site). No report describes more than five rounds. One frontend candidate in Bengaluru reports five rounds and describes the process as long. Total length varies by level, team and how quickly rounds are scheduled.

Not drawn: Online assessment, System design round, Problem-solving round without coding, Hiring manager and culture-fit conversation and Total loop, whose durations are not given in minutes.

02 / What Postman scores

Postman core values

  1. 01

    Create with curiosity

  2. 02

    Earn trust

  3. 03

    Embrace constraints

  4. 04

    Win together

  5. 05

    Own & deliver

These five item names are given exactly as they appear on Postman's official careers page at https://www.postman.com/company/careers/, which is where Postman publishes them, each with a one-line description (for example, Own & deliver is defined there as "We learn from our mistakes and adapt with ease. We push ourselves to take bold but smart risks, and we celebrate failures for the learnings we gain as a result").

Postman does not publish an interview rubric or a leadership-principles-style scoring guide; its careers FAQ path returns a 404 and its blog's careers-tagged archive is empty. The link between the values and the interview loop comes from Postman's own engineering blog, which says the hiring framework "focuses on the traits and values that we look for in candidates (rather than the skills), and assigns evaluations of those traits and values across various interview rounds", and that Postman has a defined set of criteria for each stage.

The blog does not name which value maps to which round, so any per-round mapping would be invention. Treat the five values as the vocabulary Postman evaluates against, not as a published scorecard.
