01 / For every Plivo candidate
The process, start to finish.
Plivo is a CPaaS company founded in 2011 that sells programmable voice, SMS, WhatsApp and, more recently, voice AI agent APIs; its own careers page describes a team of 100 plus people across offices in India and the US, profitable since 2015 and backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Battery Ventures, Qualcomm Ventures and Y Combinator.
This playbook covers the software engineering track (SDE, SDE II, senior software engineer, SDET and DevOps/SRE), which is the track Plivo is best known for and the one with the most detailed public interview reports: AmbitionBox's per-role pages skew toward engineering titles roughly two to three to one over product, support and sales titles, though Glassdoor's own by-title interview counts (Software Development Engineer 12, Product Support Engineer 10, Software Engineer 9, Product Manager 7, Product Support 5, Sales 5, Senior Software Engineer 5, and several smaller titles) are close to an even split between engineering and product/support/sales, not two to one.
Product, design, support and sales loops are only touched on where a report overlaps. Plivo publishes no interview guide, rubric, competency list or values list, so there is no evaluation framework to copy: its careers page offers only perks language about "high ownership", a "feedback-driven environment" and "trust, ownership, and open communication", which is marketing copy rather than an interview rubric.
Reported loops run about three to five rounds (resume shortlist, coding test or take-home, one or two live technical rounds covering DSA and low level design, a system design or techno-managerial round, then HR), with some candidates in product and support reporting six.
Glassdoor puts the average hiring process at 16 days across 75 reports, but the same page says DevOps roles average 120 days, and AmbitionBox shows 57 percent of processes finishing in under two weeks with 14 percent running beyond eight weeks, so the spread is wide by role.
Candidate sentiment is poor on both sites (Glassdoor 34.7 percent positive with difficulty 2.88 out of 5; AmbitionBox 2.4 out of 5 across 12 rated experiences), and several reports complain about take-home effort and panel quality.
Stage 1: Application or recruiter approach
varies
Varies by entry route. Glassdoor's 75 reports break down as applied online 29 percent, recruiter 23 percent, employee referral 16 percent and campus recruiting 15 percent. AmbitionBox reports list entry via 'Approached by Company', LinkedIn and the company website, so inbound recruiter contact is common for experienced engineers.
Stage 2: Resume shortlist
varies
Several reports (Developer, Senior SDET Engineer, Software Developer) list a resume shortlist as round 1 before any technical contact. No source states how long this takes.
Stage 3: Screening call (recruiter or first technical phone screen)
varies
A phone interview appears in 24 percent of Glassdoor reports. A Java developer write-up describes a telephonic round on Java basics; a DevOps report describes a screening round on load balancing, Linux basics, Kubernetes architecture and Docker. Depth of this call varies by track.
Stage 4: Online coding test
varies
A Software Developer report describes a coding test with three questions at medium to hard level; a Senior SDET Engineer report lists a coding test round described as 'moderate but logical'. A skills test appears in 14 percent of Glassdoor reports. Not every reported loop includes this round.
Stage 5: Take-home assignment plus assignment discussion
varies
Varies by track. A DevOps candidate was asked to build and deploy a messaging app with three APIs, then defend it in a dedicated assignment discussion round; a Full Stack Developer report lists a React web app assignment; a Senior Product Manager report describes an assignment that 'requires at least 3 days to complete'. Presentation rounds appear in 14 percent of Glassdoor reports.
Assignment-heavy. At least one candidate reports a working submission still being rejected without clear feedback.
Stage 6: Live technical rounds (DSA and low level design), one to three of them
varies
Varies by level and track. A Software Developer report describes a one-on-one with two DSA questions plus a low level design question; an SDET-I report describes two consecutive one-on-one coding rounds; a Java developer report describes two technical rounds; an SDET automation report describes two technical rounds mixing one DSA problem with Selenium and API testing. One-on-one interviews appear in 26 percent of Glassdoor reports.
Stage 7: System design or techno-managerial round
varies
SDE and SDE1 reports both end on a TinyURL design question and both give the same advice, 'Prepare for system design'. A Java developer report has a dedicated system design round on messaging and chat systems. A Software Developer report calls round 4 a techno-managerial round covering past projects plus high level design.
Stage 8: HR round and offer
varies
The closing round in the Java developer, Software Developer and SDET automation reports is HR or managerial, covering background, motivation, teamwork and compensation. Glassdoor puts the whole process at an average of 16 days over 75 reports, with Senior Customer Support Engineer fastest at about 1 day and DevOps Engineer slowest at about 120 days; AmbitionBox shows 57 percent of processes finishing in under two weeks and 14 percent taking more than eight weeks.
One selected Senior Product Manager describes six rounds with poor negotiation and time management at the end.
