01 / For every Okta candidate

The process, start to finish.

Okta is an identity and access management company (single sign-on, MFA, customer identity). This playbook covers the software engineering track. Other tracks differ and are not covered in depth: Okta's early careers page lists a different sequence for non-technical internship and new graduate roles (recruiter screen, team member interviews, hiring manager interview), one coaching page describes a professional services loop with a technical identity discussion and a project scenario, and sales and solutions engineering loops are not covered.

Okta's careers pages do not set out its full-time engineering interview steps: the careers page links to an "Okta Interview Guidelines" page hosted on Splash, but that page's contents are not reflected here. The only official description found is on Okta's early careers page, which lists for technical internship and new graduate roles a CodeSignal pre-screen, a recruiter screen, a technical interview and a hiring manager interview, in that order, with no durations.

Everything else below comes from third-party prep guides and a few candidate reports. For experienced hires the reported shape is: recruiter screen, an online coding assessment (often CodeSignal) and/or a technical phone screen, a hiring manager call, and a final virtual loop of roughly 3 to 5 interviews (coding, system design for mid-level and senior, behavioral). Guides describe about 4 to 5 stages over 3 to 6 weeks, and stage order differs between sources and by level.

Some senior or frontend roles add a take-home with a presentation. Identity concepts (SSO, MFA, OAuth) reportedly come up inside Okta's technical rounds, and design rounds are often judged through a security lens. Okta's careers page publishes eight value statements under "Who we are" and "How we work"; no page says they are used to score interviews, so they are listed as the company's published values, not as a confirmed rubric. Candidate experience reports are mixed, with several mentions of slow or absent recruiter follow-up.

Stage 1:

Recruiter screen

about 30 minutes

Non-technical call on background, current role, level, motivation for Okta and logistics; some guides say security domain familiarity is touched on. The most commonly reported first stage in guides for experienced hires. Okta's early careers page also lists a recruiter screen for internship and new graduate roles, without a duration.

Order differs by level: Okta's early careers page lists the CodeSignal pre-screen before the recruiter screen for technical internship and new graduate roles; guides for experienced hires put the recruiter screen first.

Stage 2:

Online coding assessment

70 to 90 minutes

Timed test, often on CodeSignal, with about four easy to medium problems; speed is reported to matter. Not present in every loop. One guide reports some 2025 variants asked candidates to build an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server with AI assistance. Okta's early careers page names a CodeSignal pre-screen for technical internship and new graduate roles but gives no length. The 70 to 90 minute figure comes from coaching guides, not from Okta.

Order relative to the recruiter screen and hiring manager call varies; some loops use a live technical screen instead.

Stage 3:

Hiring manager call

45 to 60 minutes

Project deep dive (what you built, what you decided and why, what broke), team fit, why Okta, light technical discussion. Some candidates have it before the assessment, others after. Okta's early careers page lists a hiring manager interview as the last stage for internship and new graduate roles, with no duration.

Position varies: last in Okta's early careers list, usually before the final loop in guides for experienced hires.

Stage 4:

Technical phone screen

45 to 60 minutes

Live video interview with an engineer on a LeetCode-medium style problem, explaining the approach before coding; one guide adds a brief design discussion. An intern report gives 45 minutes; guides give 60. Okta's early careers page lists a technical interview for technical internship and new graduate roles but gives no format or duration.

Stage 5:

Final virtual loop (onsite)

varies

Reported as 3 to 5 interviews, usually described as about 60 minutes each, in one day or split over two: one or two coding rounds, a system design round for mid-level and senior candidates (often security-flavored), sometimes an architecture deep dive for senior+, and a behavioral or hiring manager round. Length varies by level and team; one intern report was scheduled for 3 technical and 2 behavioral interviews (one technical interview was cancelled), and a commenter on a May 2021 Blind thread reported no system design round.

Stage 6:

Behavioral round

45 to 60 minutes

Conflict, failed projects, mistakes that affected users, hard decisions; for senior roles the interviewer may be a director. Often part of the final loop.

Stage 7:

Take-home project and presentation (select roles)

2-day assignment

Reported for select senior or frontend roles: a two-day take-home (examples given include a pixel-perfect React UI and a visual form builder), then a presentation to a panel during the loop.

Single source family; confirm with the recruiter.

Stage 8:

Decision and offer

varies

One guide says candidates hear back two to three weeks after the final loop; another describes a panel review that can decide borderline cases. End-to-end reports range from 3 to 6 weeks, with an aggregated Glassdoor average of about 24 days cited by one aggregator. Varies by level, team and region; several reports mention ghosting.

Panel review step appears in one source only.

  7. 07

    Thrive in change.

  8. 08

    Move fast. Simplify. Repeat.

Copied from the Okta careers page (https://www.okta.com/company/careers/), where the first four appear under "Who we are" and the last four under "How we work"; eight statements in total. Okta's early careers page (https://www.okta.com/company/careers/intern-program/) repeats the first four and, under "What are we looking for?", describes candidates in terms that echo several of the values (turning action into measurable traction, embracing change, moving with urgency to simplify), but it does not name the values as an interview scorecard.

Neither page says the values are used to evaluate candidates, and no public source documents a scored rubric. Treat them as context for behavioral answers, not as a confirmed interview scorecard. No sample question below is mapped to a value because none of the sources ties a question to one.
