HOW TO READ THIS PLAYBOOK

Independent: SupaCV is not affiliated with or endorsed by Netlify. This is one well-documented shape of Netlify's interviews, not a script: processes change and vary by role, team, level, and region, so confirm specifics with your recruiter.

01 / For every Netlify candidate

The process, start to finish.

Netlify is a remote-first developer platform company (build, deploy and serverless backend services for web apps), and this playbook covers the track it is best known for: engineering and technical roles (frontend, backend, platform, support engineering). Netlify does not publish a stage-by-stage interview page or an interview scoring rubric.

What is documented publicly is a philosophy: interviews are framed as two-way conversations with a structured focus area per role plus reserved time for candidate questions, communication (including asynchronous and documentation-forward communication) is assessed alongside role skills, and for engineering roles the technical assessment is a take-home project rather than a whiteboard algorithm gauntlet, run in a dedicated Slack channel where the candidate can talk to the team while building.

A vendor interview with Netlify's talent team describes a "gated" model in which the advance or reject decision is made after each stage rather than at the end of a panel, a cap of two interviewers per session, an interview guide handed to the candidate at the phone screen, an optional reverse interview with anyone at the company including co-founders, and feedback sessions offered to rejected candidates.

Netlify publishes company values on its careers page, but nothing public says those values are used as an interview rubric, so treat them as context rather than a scored framework. Note a real tension in the evidence: aggregator question banks list generic distributed-systems and LeetCode-style prompts for Netlify, while every first-hand and company-published account describes project-based assessment and discussion of work you have actually done. Prepare for the project review first.

Stage 1:

Application or referral, then recruiter phone screen

varies

Applying online is the most common entry route in candidate-reported data. At the phone screen Netlify's talent team says it hands the candidate an interview guide covering the full process, interviewer names, timelines and preparation tips. No source states a length for this call, so it varies by role and region.

Stage 2:

Hiring manager and team conversations (structured focus area)

varies

Netlify describes each conversation as an intro to the team, then a structured focus area that depends on the role, then deliberate time for the candidate's questions. Sessions are capped at two interviewers to avoid large Zoom panels. Candidate reports list one-on-one interviews as a common stage. Number of these varies by role and level; one candidate reported six interviews in total.

Stage 3:

Take-home project, built in a shared Slack channel

varies

For engineering roles the technical assessment is a take-home project plus discussion, not a whiteboard. Netlify opens a single Slack channel so the candidate can ask the team questions live while building; the talent team says the channel is itself part of the assessment (engagement, collaboration style, communication). One hire describes being given full autonomy over project scope, with a brief such as building a single page React app that consumes an API endpoint to show front-end patterns, error handling and asynchronous programming. Candidate reports also list skills tests and homework assignments. Scope and turnaround are candidate-set or role-set, so no fixed duration.

Stage 4:

Project review and technical discussion

varies

The take-home is followed by an online or onsite discussion of the work. A 2026 senior software engineer report shows the review probing specific implementation choices, for example why synchronous filesystem methods were used instead of async ones. Netlify engineers say the interview values honesty about what you do not know over textbook recitation, and asks candidates to talk about impact on customers rather than output.

Stage 5:

Leadership and cross-team conversations, optional reverse interview

varies

Later rounds bring in leadership and cross-functional teammates; one early hire (a Senior Solutions Engineer, a customer-facing technical role rather than core software engineering) describes four back-to-back conversations with leadership, engineering and the co-founders, and reports it felt conversational rather than adversarial. Treat that exact conversation count and tone as illustrative rather than a documented figure for the frontend/backend/platform tracks this playbook covers, since no equivalent first-hand account exists from a core engineering hire for this specific stage. Netlify also offers a reverse interview in which candidates can request time with anyone, including the co-founders, to ask their own questions.

Stage 6:

Decision and offer, or a feedback session

Average 20 days end to end across 30 self-reported interviews of all job titles (Glassdoor, updated April 2026); reported extremes range from about 2 days for IT support specialist to about 56 days for senior program manager

Advancement is decided after each stage rather than after a full panel, so the process can end at any gate. Netlify says candidates it declines are offered a feedback session explaining the rationale. Candidate reports on responsiveness are mixed, with some describing clear stage-by-stage communication and others reporting long silences.

02 / What Netlify scores

Our values

  1. 01

    Be inclusive

  2. 02

    Own it, ship it

  3. 03

    Care deeply, and have fun

  4. 04

    Simplify

These four are the values Netlify publishes on its careers page (netlify.com/careers), copied exactly as written there, with the descriptive sub-bullets under "Own it, ship it" reading "Admit mistakes, ask for help, apologize, and be open and honest when you don't know something" and "shipping means owning the business outcome... not just checking a mark," which is why some questions below are linked to that value.

Netlify does not publish an interview rubric, competency ladder or scoring guide, and no public source says these values are scored in interviews, so treat them as company context, not as a leadership-principle style rubric. Be aware that Netlify publishes a second, older values document at netlify.com/about/values with different item names: "Netlivate", "Weigh In, Then Buy In", "Own It, Ship It", "Care Deeply, and Have Fun" and "Diversity = Intelligence".

Read the rest of the framework notes

Only "Own it, ship it" and "Care deeply, and have fun" appear in both. Candidates asked to relate their experience to Netlify's values should work from the careers page version, which is the current hiring-facing one. Questions below are linked to a value only where they unambiguously probe it; most behavioral questions here are generic and are not linked to any value.

Roles in the full set

Roles are grouped by the category each question fits, not by the source. Switching roles is part of Interview Prep, included with Career. The counts show what each role holds in the full set.

  1. Sample question, Ownership and collaboration

How have you learned from a time in which you failed badly?

  2. Sample question, Project review and debugging

In your project, why are you using synchronous methods for filesystem operations instead of async methods?

Tests justification of sync versus async I/O choices in your own take-home code.

  3. Sample question, Systems and platform depth

Explain your approach to handling eventual consistency in a distributed system.

Tests distributed systems knowledge of eventual consistency tradeoffs.
