01 / For every Macquarie candidate
The process, start to finish.
Macquarie Group hires across several tracks (Macquarie Capital investment banking, Macquarie Asset Management, Commodities and Global Markets, Banking and Financial Services, technology and corporate roles). This playbook covers the early-careers graduate and summer intern route into its best known front-office business, Macquarie Capital investment banking, with notes where asset management differs. The process is documented officially, but only at a high level and by region.
The Australia, Hong Kong and UK pages list an online application, a psychometric assessment (cognitive ability plus behavioural style, no pass or fail), a recruiter call or one-way timed video interview, then interviews with team members (the Hong Kong and UK pages describe a case study, problem-solving activity or article to present on, plus competency questions; the Hong Kong page calls this a Superday), sometimes a final senior interview, and an offer, followed by employment screening (and reference checks on the Australia and Hong Kong pages).
The US page lists the same kinds of stage in a different order, with typically two rounds of interviews before the psychometric assessment. Offer acceptance windows are stated only on the Hong Kong page (5 days) and the UK page (7 days). The order and number of interviews vary by business group, team and region.
Candidate reports on Wall Street Oasis, mostly from US Macquarie Capital offices, describe an HR screen, a first round with two associates or analysts mixing technicals, behaviorals and brainteasers, sometimes a skills or modelling test and a psychometric assessment, and a Superday of back-to-back interviews with VPs, SVPs or MDs, most often two interviews of about 30 minutes with two interviewers each (older posts from 2008 and 2010 describe 45 minutes, 2-on-2 and 2-on-1 formats).
Mental math and brainteasers (the lily pad doubling puzzle, square roots, estimation) and questions on a recent Macquarie deal and infrastructure or energy trends appear in several sources, although some prep pages and the editorial list on the Wall Street Oasis company page may copy each other.
Macquarie publishes three principles (Opportunity, Accountability, Integrity) on its What We Stand For page, next to a link to its Code of Conduct, but it does not present them, or any other framework, as interview evaluation criteria, so no evaluation framework is included here.
Stage 1: Online application
varies
Online form plus resume. In Australia, the graduates page and recruitment page say Macquarie Capital and Macquarie Asset Management applicants must also submit a cover letter, while the Australian FAQ says a cover letter is not needed, so follow the program page and the posting. The UK page says no cover letter is needed and asks for a one-page CV, and the US pages do not mention a cover letter. Windows vary by program and region and are subject to change: the Australian 2027 Graduate Program opened 21 September 2026 and closed 13 October 2026; the 2026/2027 Summer Internship opened 5 May 2026 and closed 21 July 2026 (Melbourne and Perth) or 4 August 2026 (Sydney and Brisbane); the Hong Kong page says applications open 1 September; the US page says summer internship applications open in January and reopen in August, and graduate applications open in September, closing on a rolling basis. UK recruitment is rolling, so apply early.
Stage 2: Psychometric assessment
About 1 to 2 hours; early-careers candidates get 48 hours to complete it
Two parts: cognitive ability and behavioural style. No pass or fail and no minimum score; results are read alongside other information for the role. The recruiter sends the only authentic practice assessment. AI use is not allowed (UK page). A verification assessment may be required later, at the Superday stage (Hong Kong page). Length differs by page: about an hour (Hong Kong), one to two hours (UK, US), up to two hours (Australian FAQ).
Order differs by region: the Australia, Hong Kong and UK pages place the assessment before the interviews, while the US page lists the interview stage before it and several US candidate reports describe it after the first-round interview. Confirm the sequence with your recruiter.
Stage 3: Recruiter or HR screening call
varies (one Brisbane asset management graduate report: about 10 minutes)
A recruiter calls to learn about your career ambitions. Candidate reports describe it as background and motivation questions (why Macquarie, why banking, why private markets) with no technicals. Used in Australia and in US Macquarie Capital processes; the Hong Kong and UK pages list a video interview instead.
Stage 4: One-way video interview
varies
Pre-recorded questions answered under timed conditions, tailored to the business group, for candidates who are a strong match (Hong Kong and UK pages). The Australian page names a video or phone interview in its overview but describes only a recruiter call and face-to-face interviews; the US page mentions video interviews only in its adjustments section. The number of questions and time limits are not published; one coaching site (not first-hand) says about 30 minutes for the Australian summer internship. The UK page says not to use AI. For the UK Insight Programme this is the final step before decisions.
Stage 5: First-round interview with the team (Macquarie Capital)
varies
Reported mainly for US Macquarie Capital summer analyst and generalist roles: two associates or analysts (often over Zoom or on campus) asking a mix of technical, behavioral and brainteaser questions. Some reports also mention a skills or modelling test at this point. Format varies by office and team. The US page says typical graduate and intern roles include two rounds of interviews.
Stage 6: Superday / further interviews
varies; several US reports describe two interviews of about 30 minutes each (a 2008 report says 45 minutes)
Interviews with members of the business, virtual or in person. Officially, candidates generally consider a case study, a problem-solving activity or an article and present their views, plus competency-based questions; format depends on the team. The Australian page describes face-to-face and further team interviews and does not use the word Superday. US Macquarie Capital reports describe back-to-back interviews with VPs, SVPs or MDs, usually with two interviewers each, mixing behaviorals, valuation and accounting technicals and quick math. An asset management report describes a company case study with three team members.
The Hong Kong page still says Superdays are virtual due to COVID-19; confirm format with your recruiter.
Stage 7: Final senior interview (some programs)
varies
Graduate Programme applicants may be invited to a final interview after the Superday, and some business areas bring candidates back for a senior leader interview. One asset management intern report describes a final round with the head of asset management.
Stage 8: Offer
5 days to accept (Hong Kong page); 7 days to accept (UK page); not stated on the Australian or US pages
The recruiter gives an estimated feedback timeframe after the final interview. The Hong Kong page says candidates receive feedback on their interview outcomes. Overall process length varies: the FAQ says some roles take several weeks and graduate and intern roles may take longer; candidate reports range from under one month to two or three months.
Stage 9: Reference checks and employment screening
varies
Required after an offer and before you start. The Australia and Hong Kong pages name reference checks and employment screening; the UK and US pages name employment screening only. The recruitment team provides details.
