01 / For every Loom candidate
The process, start to finish.
Loom is the async video messaging product founded in 2015. Atlassian announced an agreement to acquire Loom in October 2023, and the deal closed that November (per Wikipedia; we could not locate Atlassian's own press release or an SEC filing stating the exact close date, so treat November as the best-supported figure rather than a primary-source fact). It is best known for product and engineering roles, so this playbook covers software engineering, product management and product design.
Hiring is no longer run by Loom as a standalone company. A request to loom.com/careers returns a 308 redirect to Atlassian's job board, Loom openings are posted as Atlassian roles, and the published stage names, durations and the values rubric below come from Atlassian's own interview handbooks.
Two Loom-era practices are still documented on Loom and Atlassian pages and are worth preparing for: a take-home assignment submitted together with a five-minute Loom recording, and a final-round panel that Loom calls a "superday", in which typically four to five employees interview the candidate individually. Loom itself never published an evaluation framework.
Atlassian publishes one, its five company values, and runs a dedicated Values Interview against them, so that is the framework listed here, applied to Loom roles by inheritance since the acquisition rather than something Loom itself published. Atlassian's early careers guide says candidates should expect 3 to 4 interviews, while the design handbook lays out six named rounds, so loop size clearly varies by track and level.
No public source states an end-to-end duration for Loom hiring specifically; one coaching guide puts Atlassian's overall loop at 2 to 4 weeks, which should not be treated as authoritative.
Stage 1: Application or sourced outreach
varies
Loom's talent team opened contact with personalized video messages to handpicked candidates instead of standard cold email, and hiring managers recorded Loom videos posted on Twitter and LinkedIn to announce openings and describe role nuances. Timing varies by role and by whether you apply or are sourced.
Stage 2: Recruiter screen
30 minutes
Atlassian's design interview handbook describes it as an informal 30 minute chat about your background, skills and career goals. Atlassian's handbooks are the published source for Loom roles now that hiring runs through Atlassian.
Stage 3: Hiring manager interview
60 minutes for design roles, not stated for other tracks
The design handbook splits it into roughly 30 minutes of structured questions on core competencies, a 20 minute block holding a 10 minute case study presentation plus 10 minutes of Q and A, and 5 minutes for your own questions. The engineering handbook names a Manager Interview and describes it as a one on one on who you are today and who you want to be at Atlassian, without publishing a duration.
Stage 4: Take-home assignment submitted with a five-minute Loom
varies
Loom's talent team asks prospective team members to complete an assignment and send it along with a five-minute loom, so the panel reads personality and working style alongside the work itself. Scope and deadline vary by role and level. The source post is dated July 2022 and predates the Atlassian acquisition.
Pre-acquisition practice; confirm with your recruiter that it still applies
Stage 5: Superday final-round panel
varies
Loom describes a superday as a big series of interviews with the panel, in which typically four to five loommates each interview the candidate individually. The talent blog places superday on-sites in San Francisco and says recruiters send pre-briefs to panelists on why the company is hiring and what to prep for. Length varies by track and level, and both sources predate the acquisition.
Pre-acquisition format; Atlassian's published loop below may replace it
Stage 6: Coding interview (engineering track)
varies
Run in two parts, Data Structures and Code Design. Candidates choose their own programming language. Atlassian states that clean code matters but what is most important is how you think. No duration is published on the handbook. Example prompts sit in linked Google Drive and PDF documents covering Frontend, Backend, Fullstack and SRE at both Software Engineer and Principal Engineer levels.
Stage 7: Systems design interview (engineering track)
60 minutes
The interviewer chooses from a set of structured questions designed to show how you would tackle the problems Atlassian solves. Assessment covers how you explore an issue, the clarifying questions you ask, and how you talk through constraints such as reliability and cost.
Stage 8: Portfolio review and portfolio follow-ups (design track)
45 minutes plus two 30 minute sessions
Portfolio Review runs 45 minutes with Q and A led by the hiring manager, and content design roles add a writing exercise. Two 30 minute Portfolio Follow-up Interviews run back to back or within 24 hours, the first on Product Thinking and the second on Craft Excellence. Atlassian asks for recent projects, preferably from the past 3 to 4 years, structured around problem, approach, time management, collaboration, success metrics and learnings.
Stage 9: Craft interviews (product management track)
varies
Three named interviews: Lead and Inspire, Craft Mastery and Deliver Outcomes. Craft Mastery evaluates a customer-first mindset and T-shaped skills across the General Manager, Artist and Scientist dimensions. Deliver Outcomes asks whether the products you shipped drove value rather than how long they took. Durations are not published.
Stage 10: Triad interview
variesSenior design roles only
Applies to senior individual contributor and manager design roles only. Meetings with engineering and product counterparts. Timing is not stated in the handbook.
Stage 11: Values interview
45 minutes for design roles, not stated for other tracks
A conversational assessment run by someone from another department or outside your team, measuring alignment with Atlassian's five core values. The engineering handbook calls these usually fairly informal meetings whose goal is to understand your mindset and the way it guides your actions. The product handbook confirms a separate values-focused interview alongside values signals gathered throughout the loop.
Stage 12: Hiring committee review
varies
The engineering handbook names a final Hiring Committee Review that looks at skills, strengths and behaviors objectively. For product roles, all four interviewers give individual feedback through specific assessment frameworks and then meet collectively to discuss recommendations. No turnaround time is published.
Stage 13: Offer and "all of the Looms"
varies
When Loom decided to extend an offer, the team packaged a document it called all of the Looms, holding a personalized video from every panelist. The hiring manager typically recorded around 3 minutes and panelists 30 to 50 seconds each. Pre-acquisition practice.

02 / What Loom scores
The framework.
Atlassian company values (assessed in the Values Interview)
01
Open company, no bullshit
02
Build with heart and balance
03
Don't #@!% the customer
04
Play, as a team
05
Be the change you seek
Loom never published an evaluation framework of its own, and no surviving Loom values page could be found. Loom has been part of Atlassian since the acquisition closed in November 2023 (announced that October), and loom.com/careers now redirects to Atlassian's job board, so Loom candidates are assessed against Atlassian's five published company values.
Item names and count above match Atlassian's official values page word for word (five values, including the exact wording of "Don't #@!% the customer" and "Be the change you seek", each linked to one question below). Atlassian runs a dedicated Values Interview against them, typically conducted by someone from a different team or department, and the engineering, product and design handbooks all confirm this round exists.
