01 / For every Fastly candidate
The process, start to finish.
Fastly is an edge cloud and CDN platform, and this playbook covers the track it is best known for: platform and systems engineering (edge protocols, caching, networking, security products), with a secondary note on its large customer-facing Customer Solutions Engineering track, since both dominate its open roles. Fastly does not publish an interview-process page.
The stage-by-stage structure below comes from a coaching guide that reconstructs candidate reports (recruiter call, technical screen, onsite of roughly 45-minute rounds, a collaborative problem-solving session, and sometimes a final leadership conversation), consistent with aggregate candidate data showing an average of three rounds and a response within one to two weeks.
Fastly does publish eight company values on its careers page, and those are listed here exactly as published, as the only official framework; Fastly publishes no interview rubric that maps questions to those values, so no question is asserted to map to one.
Technical content is grounded in Fastly's own live job descriptions: C, C++ and Rust with TLS, HTTP and QUIC for edge protocol roles; Go for security-product and backend API roles; Go, AWS/GCP, Docker, Kubernetes and Terraform for platform roles; TCP/IP, BGP, Anycast and DNS for network SRE roles; and HTTP, TLS, DNS, Varnish/VCL and HLS/DASH for customer solutions engineering. Candidate-reported questions skew heavily toward caching internals, protocol state machines, concurrency and distributed-systems design rather than puzzle trivia.
Stage 1: Initial recruiter call
about 30 minutes
Screening conversation covering interest in the role, background, work culture and values, plus logistics such as location preference and work arrangement.
Stage 2: Technical screening
varies
Video call led by a hiring manager or senior engineer, focused on live coding and problem solving, plus discussion of past projects and the technical decisions behind them. The source states the format but gives no duration; length varies by role and interviewer.
Stage 3: Onsite interviews
about 45 minutes per round, multiple rounds
Several one-on-one rounds mixing technical and behavioral content: systems programming, distributed systems and performance optimization on the technical side; teamwork, communication and values alignment on the behavioral side. The number of rounds varies by team and level.
Stage 4: Collaborative problem-solving session
varies
Part of the onsite in some loops: a coding or design problem worked through jointly with interviewers, to observe approach and communication rather than only the final answer. Not reported for every candidate.
Stage 5: Final interview with senior leadership or cross-functional partners
varies
Described as happening in some cases only, covering long-term career goals, culture fit and contribution to the mission. Whether it happens varies by role and seniority.
Stage 6: Decision and response
1 to 2 weeks after the last interview
Aggregate self-reported data: the average respondent completed 3 rounds and heard back within 1 to 2 weeks (67 percent said 1 to 2 weeks, 33 percent said within a week). Sample size is small (this breakdown reflects only 3 respondents), so treat as directional.
Reported interview time, one scale in minutes
Where the minutes go
- Initial recruiter call~30 min
- Onsite interviews~45 min
Not drawn: Technical screening, Collaborative problem-solving session, Final interview with senior leadership or cross-functional partners and Decision and response, whose durations are not given in minutes.
02 / What Fastly scores
Fastly company values
01
Have a curious spirit
02
Focus on our customer
03
We are trustworthy
04
Act with passion
05
Operate with integrity
06
We are competitive
07
Embrace transparency
08
We are good people
These eight values are published on Fastly's official careers page and appear here word for word and in the exact published order (https://www.fastly.com/about/careers). A third-party company profile (builtin.com) independently lists the same eight (curious spirit, customer focus, trustworthiness, passion, integrity, competitiveness, transparency, good people), describing them as outlined in Fastly's Code of Business Conduct.
Fastly does not publish an interview rubric, scoring scale, or any mapping from interview questions to these values, and no source shows an interviewer assessing a named value. Behavioral rounds are reported to assess "how you align with Fastly's values" in general terms only (an exact quote from the interviewquery.com guide). For that reason no question below is mapped to a value: no mapping is asserted where none is published.
