HOW TO READ THIS PLAYBOOK

Independent: SupaCV is not affiliated with or endorsed by Elastic. This is one well-documented shape of Elastic's interviews, not a script: processes change and vary by role, team, level, and region, so confirm specifics with your recruiter.

01 / For every Elastic candidate

The process, start to finish.

Elastic is the company behind Elasticsearch, Kibana, Logstash and Beats (the Elastic Stack), sold across search, observability and security. It hires for several tracks, including Solutions Architect and support engineering, but this playbook covers the track it is best known for: software engineering on the Elastic Stack (search, distributed systems, Java and Lucene internals, plus Kibana front end and cloud/SRE work).

Elastic has been a fully distributed company since founding, with staff in roughly 40 countries and 18 time zones, so the process is remote-first and conducted over video. Elastic does publish a hiring-process page and a values framework: the six-step flow on its careers site (recruiter screen, department interviews, panel presentation, technical assessment, decision, onboarding) and "Our Source Code", nine named values that its own hiring page tells candidates to familiarize themselves with before interviewing.

Elastic also publishes explicit rules on candidate AI use and says it runs AI monitoring throughout hiring. What is thin in public sources is the engineering loop itself: no official round count, no official end-to-end timeline, and no published interview rubric beyond the Source Code values.

Round counts, per-question content and the 4 to 6 week timeline below come from coaching guides rather than from Elastic or from first-hand candidate reports; Glassdoor, Indeed, InterviewQuery and the one detailed Medium write-up are not among the sources.

Stage 1:

Application and resume review

varies

Elastic reviews the application before any call. Its published AI guidance applies from this point: AI may help organize thoughts or polish a resume but must not fabricate experience, and Elastic states it uses AI monitoring tools throughout the hiring process. Duration is not stated by any source and varies by team and req volume.

Stage 2:

Recruiter screen

30 minutes (official); coaching guides report 30 to 45 minutes

Elastic's own page calls this the recruiter screen and describes it as a brief phone or Zoom introduction and a chance to ask questions before the formal interview phase. Coaching guides describe it as covering background, motivations and why Elastic. This is also where you can ask for the interview guide and the topic list for later rounds.

Stage 3:

Department interviews (hiring manager, peers, leadership)

45 to 90 minutes per interview (official); coaching guides report a 45 to 60 minute hiring manager conversation

Elastic's page describes multiple rounds that may include peer-to-peer, hiring manager and leadership interviews assessing role fit and alignment with the department's goals. The number of these interviews is not published and varies by level, team and region. Coaching guides describe the hiring manager round as a structured discussion of past experience, technical depth and how you approach complex problems rather than a quiz.

Stage 4:

Panel presentation

45 to 90 minutes

Elastic's page describes role-playing scenarios and product demonstrations intended as a realistic simulation of your potential performance. Elastic's own wording frames it as conditional ('you may be asked to participate'), not universal. No source, official or coaching, states which roles or engineering levels actually see this step, so do not assume it applies to a given software engineering loop. Elastic's page sequences this step before the technical assessment, not after.

Stage 5:

Technical assessment

60 to 90 minutes (official); coaching guides report 2 to 3 technical rounds of 60 to 90 minutes each

Elastic's page says this can take the form of a technical deep dive discussion, coverage of multiple areas (product knowledge, architecture, problem-solving), or a coding exercise with proctored observation. Which form you get varies by role and team. Coaching guides add that engineering loops commonly include coding, a distributed systems or search architecture round, and a code or pull request review round.

Stage 6:

Behavioral and values round

varies

Coaching guides describe a dedicated values-based behavioral session tied to Elastic's Source Code, and Elastic's own hiring page tells candidates to familiarize themselves with its values and demonstrate that understanding during interviews. No source states a duration, and it may be folded into the department interviews rather than run as a separate slot. This is a coaching-guide addition, not one of Elastic's own six named stages, so its position in a live loop (placed here, before the decision) is an editorial best guess, not a documented fact.

Stage 7:

Decision

follow-up within a few days (official)

Elastic's page states, word for word: 'We will do our best to follow up within a few days, but the process may take longer if multiple candidates are interviewing for the same role,' after an internal review of application and interview materials. A HackerRank blog interview with Elastic's own Global Senior Technical Recruiter states interviewers complete candidate scorecards within 24 hours of each interview and that feedback sessions are scheduled after rounds to decide whether to advance; Elastic's own careers page does not mention scorecards. Coaching guides describe a hiring committee style review, which Elastic itself does not name.

Stage 8:

Offer and onboarding

varies

Elastic's final published step covers compensation, benefits, start date and onboarding as a new employee. No source states negotiation or offer-window durations.

    Speed, Scale, Relevance

Elastic publishes these nine values as "Our Source Code" at https://www.elastic.co/about/our-source-code, and the item names above are copied from that page exactly, in order, count of nine. Elastic's own hiring page points candidates at "Our Source Code" and advises familiarizing yourself with the company's values and demonstrating that understanding during interviews, so this is a genuine interview-relevant framework rather than marketing copy. Two caveats.

First, Elastic does not publish an interview rubric, scoring scale, or any mapping from these values to specific interview questions, so treat the values as themes to have stories for, not as named scoring dimensions an interviewer will read out. Second, the value tags on the behavioral questions below are a conservative reading of which value a question touches, not a published mapping: only four questions carry a tag, and the rest are left untagged on purpose.

Read the rest of the framework notes

The complete paragraph text behind both cited values, not just their opening line, supports the inferred tags: "01.02, /FORMAT" in full reads "Our products are distributed by design, our company is distributed by intention. With many languages, perspectives, and cultures, it's easy to lose something in translation. Over email and chat, doubly so. Until we get a perpetual empathy machine, don't assume malice.

A distributed Elastic makes for a diverse Elastic, which makes for a better Elastic," which directly supports its use on the remote-collaboration question; and "HUMBLE, Ambitious" in full reads "Ambition drives us to challenge ourselves and the people around us to do better. It is not an excuse to be an asshole. Be humble. Be ambitious. At Elastic, we are both," which supports its use on the conflict-handling and speaking-up questions.

  1. Sample question, Coding

Implement an inverted index: accept a list of documents and build a map from term to the documents containing it.

Tests inverted-index construction, the core Lucene/Elasticsearch data structure for term lookup.

  2. Sample question, System design and distributed systems

Design a search system over one billion documents, covering sharding, routing, BM25 scoring and aggregations.

Tests distributed sharding and routing design plus relevance scoring at scale.

  3. Sample question, Behavioral and Source Code values

Describe a situation in which you had to work with remote or distributed team members on an Elasticsearch project. What strategies did you use to maintain clear and consistent communication?
