HOW TO READ THIS PLAYBOOK

Independent: SupaCV is not affiliated with or endorsed by Atlan. This is one well-documented shape of Atlan's interviews, not a script: processes change and vary by role, team, level, and region, so confirm specifics with your recruiter.

01 / For every Atlan candidate

The process, start to finish.

Atlan builds a metadata platform and data catalog, and it is best known for hiring engineers (backend, full-stack and data) plus data-adjacent roles, so this playbook covers the engineering track. Non-engineering roles run through the same published stage names but with a role-specific work sample; no public source describes those loops in detail. The shape of the process is unusual for a developer-tools company: the centre of gravity is a take-home challenge or work sample, not a live algorithms gauntlet.

Atlan's own careers page publishes a five-stage flow (Get-to-Know-You Interview, Deep Dive with the Hiring Manager, Work Sample or Challenge, Atlanian Interview, Offer and Decision). Independent candidate write-ups add a screening code test in front of the challenge for some campus and early-career funnels, and describe the technical round as a cross-examination of the submission rather than a fresh problem. One account on Atlan's own blog puts application to offer at roughly 2 to 3 weeks.

The total round count is not published; across sources it lands at about four to six substantive rounds, with an extra coding assessment in some funnels. Atlan does not publish an interview scorecard or a named rubric. It does publish two lists on its careers page, its company values and a set of attributes it looks for in candidates, and both are listed below exactly as published.

Every candidate account of the final round describes it as a long, personal, unstructured conversation with a co-founder or senior leader rather than a structured behavioral loop.

Stage 1:

Application and resume review

varies

Atlan's own hiring post describes a portal application with role-specific questions, and says application answers and evidence of shipped work (GitHub links, apps you have published) count for more than the resume alone. One data-engineering account describes a multi-week wait at this stage. Duration is not published and varies by role and volume.

Duration not stated by any source

Stage 2:

Get-to-Know-You Interview (talent partner)

30-45 minutes

Named and timed on Atlan's careers page. Covers your background, what you are looking for, and Atlan's own picture of the product, culture and team.

Stage 3:

Online coding assessment

30 minutes to about 6 hours, depending on the format used
Some funnels only

Not part of the process Atlan publishes, and it clearly is not applied uniformly. One candidate report describes a 30-minute CodeJudge round with a single LeetCode-medium question; another describes a roughly 6-hour HackerRank round with four mock-production applications to debug plus APIs to build, in Java, Python or Go. A third account, published on Atlan's own blog, says the candidate was told in advance there would be no leet coding. Ask your talent partner which format applies to your funnel.

Inconsistent across sources; varies by role, level and year

Stage 4:

Deep Dive with the Hiring Manager

45-60 minutes

Named and timed on Atlan's careers page: a focused look at a small number of real projects, your role in them, the decisions you made, the trade-offs you navigated and what you learned. A future teammate is sometimes present. Atlan's own published flow places this stage before the Work Sample or Challenge, which this playbook's timeline order follows.

Stage 5:

Work Sample or Challenge (take-home)

varies

The main filter. Atlan's careers page lists it as a take-home or live working session whose format depends on the role, designed to see how you think, use AI, communicate and make judgment calls. On completion windows the sources disagree by funnel: Atlan's internship post says 3 to 8 days, while a backend internship account on Atlan's blog says about 1.5 weeks. Reported briefs include a design challenge with a written spec plus a proof of concept, a choice between building on Atlan's AI SDK or a ticket booking system, and a retrieval-augmented itinerary generator with a React frontend and a Python/FastAPI backend.

Stage 6:

Technical interview on your submission

about 1 hour

Consistently reported at roughly an hour. Sometimes one senior engineer, sometimes a panel of two (one backend, one frontend). The questions are mostly about the thing you submitted: how you would scale it, why you picked that database, caching, rate limiting, concurrency, edge cases. The data-engineering funnel is reported as two technical rounds instead of one, the second going deeper on pipelines and storage.

Stage 7:

Atlanian Interview (co-founder or senior leader)

45-60 minutes on the careers page; candidate accounts report an hour or more

Atlan's careers page frames it as a conversation about how and why you have invested your time to date, agency, feedback, and what doing the best work of your career looks like. Candidate accounts describe it as informal and personal, running over its scheduled length, covering childhood and how you got into technology, family background and values, side projects, motivation and long-term goals. Several accounts treat it as the round that decides the outcome.

Stage 8:

Office visit with the team (historical, selected candidates)

1-2 days

Described in Atlan's own 2019-era hiring posts: selected candidates spend a day or two with the team, meet co-founders and work a real-world problem statement. It does not appear in the current published five-stage flow or in any recent candidate account, so treat it as possible rather than expected.

Sourced only to posts last updated around 2019; may no longer run

Stage 9:

Offer and Decision

varies

Named on the careers page. The talent partner walks through compensation, equity and country-specific benefits. No source states how long this takes; one account on Atlan's blog puts the whole process at roughly 2 to 3 weeks from application to offer.

A tag is the condition given in brackets in the stage name.

    Others Before Self

Atlan does not publish an interview rubric, scorecard or leveling guide. What it does publish, on https://atlan.com/careers/, are two separate lists, shown above exactly as published and in page order. The first five items are Atlan's company values: Bias for Action, Giving 120% & Never Be Satisfied, Be Straightforward, Problem First, Solution Second, and One Team.

The last six are the attributes Atlan says it looks for in candidates: Clarity & First Principles, Agency & Ownership, Growth Mindset, AI-First Thinking, Intrinsic Motivation, and Others Before Self. They are combined into one list here only because interviewers draw on both and the questions below map to both lists; Atlan itself presents them as two lists, not one framework. Note that the item "Problem First, Solution Second" contains an internal comma, so it is one item, not two.

Read the rest of the framework notes

All 11 item names and their page order match the page as of September 2026, and the page gives full description text for "Bias for Action" and for all six "what we look for" attributes (e.g. Agency & Ownership: "You move before you're asked... you don't wait to be told"; Others Before Self: "Customer first. Always... you elevate teammates, share recognition").

The description text for the remaining four values (Giving 120% & Never Be Satisfied, Be Straightforward, Problem First Solution Second, One Team) is not given here, likely because that content sits behind interactive tabs on the page that show only the "Bias for Action" panel by default; their names match the page word for word, but question tags for those four specific values rest on the name alone, not on a description.

Roles are grouped by the category each question fits, not by the source. Switching roles is part of Interview Prep, included with Career. The counts show what each role holds in the full set.

  1. Sample question, Take-home challenge and project deep dive

How would you optimize the project you submitted, improve its functionality, and make it more scalable?

Reported word for word as the opening line of attack in the technical round.

  2. Sample question, Backend and system design

Which database did you choose for this and why? What caching strategy would you add?

Database selection rationale plus caching is reported as a standard pair in the backend half of the panel.

  3. Sample question, Culture and founder round

Tell us about feedback you have received in a previous role and what you did with it.
