01 / For every Airtable candidate

The process, start to finish.

Airtable is a no-code / low-code database and app platform ("bases", tables, views, formulas, automations) headquartered in San Francisco. This playbook covers the track Airtable is best known for hiring: product and software engineering (frontend, backend and full-stack, plus new grad and intern SWE). Coverage of product management, data and go-to-market roles is thin in public sources, so it is not filled in here. The loop is unusual in two ways that candidates report consistently.

First, Airtable offers a choice between a live technical phone screen and a paid take-home exercise, and one candidate report puts the take-home stipend at $500 for roughly 4 to 8 hours of work with about a week to submit.

Second, the technical rounds lean heavily on Airtable's own product surface: candidates are asked to design or extend a real Airtable feature, to design the APIs behind one, and to write small practical functions over rows of a table, rather than to grind classic algorithm puzzles.

One Blind poster describes the loop as "no LC" (no LeetCode), though a separate Blind thread has a commenter calling one system-design round "really a leetcode problem", so this is a tendency candidates report rather than a guarantee. Scalability and trade-off follow-ups attach to almost every technical round. Airtable does not publish a named evaluation framework, leadership principles or a public values list on any public page that could be checked, so no framework is listed here.

The only company-published statement found on official Airtable-controlled pages (its Greenhouse job board) is the mission: "give everyone the tools they need to organize their world". Candidates should anchor behavioral answers to that mission and to product judgment rather than to an invented principles rubric. A caution on the timeline below: several coaching sites and search results attribute a "3 to 4 weeks" figure and a recruiter-screen / hiring-manager / practical-evaluation / panel sequence to airtable.com/careers.

That attribution could not be confirmed on the page itself, so none of it is cited here. The durations below come only from sources whose text could be checked.

Stage 1:

Application and resume screen

varies

Resume review before any live contact. One guide puts the advance rate around 20 percent. Duration is not stated by any source and will vary by team, level and whether the application is referred or cold.

Stage 2:

Recruiter phone screen

about 30 minutes

Introduction to the company and role, background and motivation, and role fit. Coaching guides describe it as resume-driven with an eye on whether your interests match the team.

Stage 3:

Online assessment (HackerRank) for new grad and intern pipelines

varies

Reported for early-career pipelines rather than experienced hires. Typically one data-structures-and-algorithms problem, sometimes a multi-part table-style problem that mirrors Airtable's own row-and-field data model. Presence and length vary by pipeline and level.

Stage 4:

Technical phone screen or paid take-home (candidate chooses)

phone screen about 60 minutes; take-home about six hours of work with one week to submit (candidate reports say 4 to 8 hours)

Candidates report being offered a choice between a live technical screen and a take-home. Airtable compensates for the take-home; one Blind report puts the stipend at $500. Phone-screen coding is described as practical rather than leetcode style; a build-dependencies problem is reported repeatedly at this stage, with the interviewer spending 15 to 20 minutes setting it up. One guide notes an average response time of about two weeks after a take-home submission. The extern.com early-career pipeline describes two separate ~60-minute live technical rounds rather than a take-home; that source is cited here for the phone-screen duration and practical-problem style, not for the take-home terms.

Stage 5:

Onsite / virtual loop

about 5 hours in one day (experienced-hire pipeline); separate feature/API-design and general-coding rounds run about 60 minutes each in the early-career pipeline

Reported composition varies by track, pipeline and year: three to five rounds drawn from general coding, feature and API design, system design, a review of your take-home submission, product design, and behavioral. Candidates say they pick a frontend or backend track and the loop is weighted accordingly. Several rounds ask you to design an Airtable feature the interviewer describes; interviewers demo the relevant product surface if you have not used it. Expect a scalability and reliability discussion after each technical round even when the coding itself takes 10 to 15 minutes. Note that one Blind commenter describes one system-design round in this stage as 'really a leetcode problem', which cuts against the 'not leetcode style' characterization reported elsewhere.

Stage 6:

Behavioral and values round

about 60 minutes

Run as one of the onsite rounds rather than a separate stage. Covers past experience, teamwork, conflict, feedback and cross-functional collaboration. Guides frame it as alignment with Airtable's mission and culture; note that Airtable publishes no named values rubric to map answers onto.

Stage 7:

References, final review and offer

varies

Professional reference checks before the offer is finalized, plus final debrief, team matching and compensation discussion. No source states a duration for this stage.

Stage 8:

End to end total

about four weeks (early-career pipeline); varies by role, level and team

The only source that states an end-to-end figure gives roughly four weeks from application to decision for the new grad pipeline. Experienced-hire loops with a take-home can run longer, since one guide reports about two weeks of turnaround on the take-home alone. One candidate reports a cold rejection email with no feedback.

Reported interview time, one scale in minutes

Where the minutes go

  • Recruiter phone screen~30 min
  • Technical phone screen or paid take-home~60 min
  • Onsite / virtual loop~60 min
  • Behavioral and values round~60 min

Not drawn: Application and resume screen, Online assessment for new grad and intern pipelines, References, final review and offer and End to end total, whose durations are not given in minutes.

  1. Sample question, Coding and data structures

Implement undo and redo for a spreadsheet, framed around reversible cell-value edits.

  2. Sample question, Feature, API and system design

Design extensible undo and redo for a spreadsheet.

Extensibility is the point: the source's own answer frames it around extending to row deletion, column deletion and similar new operation types.

  3. Sample question, Behavioral and collaboration

Tell me about a time you had to learn a new technology quickly for a project.
