01 / For every Virtu Financial candidate

The process, start to finish.

Virtu Financial is a publicly listed global market maker and electronic trading firm. This playbook covers the quantitative trader and quant researcher track, the roles it is best known for. Software engineering differences are noted because Virtu's careers page says traders need strong programming as well as strong academics, and many reports cover both tracks; the coding and systems questions below come mostly from engineer-track reports.

Third-party prep guides broadly agree on the shape of the process, although they count between 3 and 5 stages. Virtu's own notice on an automated employment decision tool says that for certain open roles the first stage of recruitment is an automated resume review, and some guides also list a resume screen first. There is a timed online assessment: coding for engineers, and probability and mental math (sometimes coding) for traders and quants.

Next comes a short recruiter or HR screen, which often includes easy brain teasers. Then 1 to 3 technical phone or video rounds on probability, expected value, statistics and a resume deep dive. The last stage is a superday of roughly 4 to 6 interviews, which may open with an IQ or logic style test, followed in some reports by a modeling-heavy round with a team lead. Reported total timelines run from 3 to 8 weeks.

Virtu publishes no interview evaluation framework or competency list: its careers and about pages describe roles, culture and the business but nothing about how candidates are assessed, and the automated tool notice does not list its scoring criteria. Almost all detail comes from third-party prep sites, and they disagree on several points, such as whether the trader online test is coding or probability.

Several puzzle entries are known by title only, so the questions below are worded to match what the sources actually say.

Stage 1:

Application and resume screen

varies

No source states a length for this step, and it varies by role and team. Virtu's notice on an automated employment decision tool says that for certain open roles, resumes are reviewed by an automated tool against job-specific scoring criteria in the first stage of recruitment; it does not list the criteria. Myntbit lists a resume screen as the first stage, while Quantvault says team resume screens come after the online assessment and HR screen, so the order differs by report and team.

Sources disagree on where the resume screen sits in the order

Stage 2:

Online assessment

30-90 minutes (reported; sources differ)

Timed online test, reported on Codility or HackerRank. Quantvault gives 75 minutes and 5 problems, Quantt and TechPrep give about 90 minutes, and Myntbit gives 30 to 60 minutes. Content varies by track: engineers get algorithmic coding problems (2 to 5 reported), while traders and quants get probability and mental math in some reports and coding in Python or C++ in others. Tradermath says tests are often adaptive in difficulty, and that some trading-adjacent roles add an IQ-style pattern test.

Sources disagree on whether the trader test is coding or probability

Stage 3:

Recruiter / HR screen

20-30 minutes

Phone or video call with a recruiter covering background, motivation (why Virtu, why trading or HFT), communication and the resume. Quantvault says the call almost always ends with 1 to 3 easy brain teasers and reports that missing one is a cut; Tradermath says a simple arithmetic question or brainteaser appears only occasionally.

Sources disagree on how often brain teasers appear in this call

Stage 4:

Technical phone / video interviews

30-60 minutes each

Reported as 1 to 3 rounds with traders or quant researchers. They cover probability, expected value, statistics, mental math, logic brain teasers, market-making scenarios and a resume or research deep dive. Quant strategists and engineers also get a live coding round. One candidate described a technical screen of about 58 minutes, about 40 of them Python coding on HackerRank.

Stage 5:

Superday (onsite or virtual)

Full day; 4-6 interviews of about 45 minutes each (one report)

Back-to-back interviews at the New York office (Austin also mentioned for engineers) or by video, with senior traders, team leads and sometimes executives. One report says the day opens with a 30-60 minute IQ/logic test, followed by resume, probability/combinatorics and brain-teaser rounds, plus a mental math test for traders. The day includes a behavioral interview with a senior person. Reported counts range from 3 to 6 interviews.

Stage 6:

Final round / decision

varies; decision typically within 1-2 weeks (one source)

One source describes a final modeling-heavy round with a head or team lead and calls it a common rejection point. Another describes a senior management review before the decision. Whether this is a separate round or part of the superday varies by team and report.

Sources disagree on whether this is a distinct round

Roles are grouped by the category each question fits, not by the source. Switching roles is part of Interview Prep, included with Career. The counts show what each role holds in the full set.

  1. Sample question, Probability and expected value

A random walk starts at 0 and moves +1 or -1 with equal probability at each step. What is the expected number of steps to reach +5 for the first time?

Tests random-walk first-passage time and why a symmetric walk has an infinite expected time to hit +5.

  2. Sample question, Brain teasers and mental math

What is the angle between the hour and minute hands at a given time, for example 5:15 or 3:25?

Tests the hands' angular speeds, 6 degrees per minute for the minute hand and 0.5 for the hour hand.

  3. Sample question, Behavioral and motivation

Tell me about a time you went beyond what was asked to reach a goal.
