01 / For every Tower Research Capital candidate

The process, start to finish.

Tower Research Capital is a quantitative trading firm. It calls itself a leader in quantitative trading and describes a team-based structure with independence and autonomy for its teams, and candidate accounts also describe high-frequency trading work. Its careers page groups jobs into quantitative trading, core engineering and business support. Tower publishes no interview stages on its careers, internships or other public pages.

Most of the public candidate evidence is for the engineering track: 12 Naukri Code360 reports for SDE, software engineer, application engineer and intern roles dated 2020 to 2022, where a city is listed it is Gurgaon. This playbook therefore covers the engineering track and adds what little is public about the quant track.

In those reports, 10 of 12 begin with an online assessment on HackerRank or HackerEarth (60 to 90 minutes: usually 2 or 3 coding problems, often with MCQs on CS fundamentals, C++, Linux or SQL). Next come usually 2 or 3 technical interviews covering data structures and algorithms, plus a lot of operating systems, networking, C++ and DBMS internals.

Some loops add a design or machine-coding round (Splitwise, a high-frequency trading system), a hiring-manager or senior round, and a short HR round. Reported loops list 2 to 5 rounds including the assessment. Prep sites describe a longer version with one or two 60-minute phone screens, a super day of 4 to 6 back-to-back interviews with 2 or 3 trading teams, and then team matching.

No first-hand report describes that version, and QuantVault says there is no single Tower onsite because each team runs its own process. On the quant track, prep sites and a few reports point to a probability and statistics screen, then interviews on probability, puzzles, statistics and market microstructure.

Sources disagree on the overall timeline: TechPrep says 3 to 5 weeks, while one TechInterview page says 1 to 2 weeks (a second TechInterview page applies 1 to 2 weeks only to the final decision after the super day). Tower's careers page publishes a short list of qualities it says it always looks for (Entrepreneurial spirit, PASSION, CLEAR COMMUNICATION, CALM AND FOCUS).

The same page says interviews have no gotcha questions or random logic problems, but candidate reports describe puzzle rounds anyway.

Stage 1:

Online assessment (engineering)

60 to 90 minutes

In candidate reports the test ran on HackerRank, or HackerEarth in one case; two reports do not name the platform. Most had 2 or 3 coding problems, often with MCQs on CS fundamentals, C++/Java/shell, Linux or SQL. One report included 15 aptitude questions, and one SDE-2 test added a React to-do app task with 25 MCQs and 2 SQL questions. Some links stayed open for 48 hours or a week, so candidates picked their own time. One application-engineer test had 5 questions on Linux, log parsing, SQL and a graph problem. Two reports (a March 2022 software engineer loop and an October 2021 campus intern loop) list no assessment at all. Prep sites quote 75 to 135 minutes (QuantVault gives 75 minutes and 4 problems for developer roles; Quantt, TraderMath and TechInterview give 90 to 120; TechPrep gives 90 to 135).

Stage 2:

Technical interviews: DSA plus CS fundamentals (usually 2 to 3 rounds)

30 to 120 minutes per round

Video call, phone or face to face. Individual reports list between 1 and 4 technical rounds. Each round usually has one or two coding problems plus questions on OS, networking, C++/OOP, DBMS, or Linux and Python for application roles; one campus intern round was a 30-minute Java discussion. In one report, two interviewers asked many OS and computer architecture questions after the coding problem. Prep sites describe these as one or two 60-minute live-coding phone screens where the interviewer changes the problem mid-solve.

Stage 3:

Design or machine-coding round

60 to 90 minutes

Low-level or machine-coding design (Splitwise came up twice), a high-frequency trading system design for a campus intern, and debugging a slow API service. Prep sites add order book or matching engine and in-memory file system designs. Only 3 of the 12 reports list a round like this, so it is not in every loop.

Stage 4:

Puzzle round (some engineering loops)

60 minutes

One SDE-2 loop had a round with only puzzles (a balance-and-weights puzzle and a rate puzzle). Not every report has one.

Tower's careers page says there are no gotcha questions or random logic problems, which conflicts with this report.

Stage 5:

Hiring manager or senior leader round

30 to 60 minutes

A discussion of resume, internships, past system architecture and situational questions, sometimes with basic high-level design. Interviewers in reports included a hiring manager, a team lead, a division manager, a senior member and, at one campus drive, the firm's CIO. One of these rounds is labeled an HR round in its report but was a projects and resume discussion with a senior member.

Stage 6:

HR round

15 to 60 minutes

Questions on motivation (why Tower, why finance, why change jobs), strengths and goals, plus compensation logistics. One prep site gives 20 to 30 minutes.

Stage 7:

Super day

one day, 4 to 6 back-to-back interviews
Prep-site description only

Prep sites describe a final day with interviewers from 2 or 3 trading teams, covering coding, systems, C++ internals and behavioral questions for engineers, and probability, statistics and market microstructure for quant roles. Quantt, TraderMath and TechInterview say 5 to 6 interviews; TechPrep and a second TechInterview page say 4 to 6, and the second page places it at the New York office or virtually. QuantVault disagrees on the shape: it says there is no single Tower onsite and that final rounds depend on the team. None of the first-hand reports describe a super day.

Only prep sites describe this stage, and they disagree on its size and on whether it exists as a single event.

Stage 8:

Quant or strategist track: probability and statistics screen, then math interviews

varies

Length varies by role and by team, since QuantVault says each team (pod) runs its own process. Prep sites say the quant track gets a probability and statistics test or screen in place of the engineers' coding test. Quoted lengths range from 45 minutes for a QR phone screen and 45 to 60 minutes for a probability round (QuantVault) to 90 to 120 minutes for the test (Quantt). It is followed by probability and brainteaser rounds and statistics rounds whose content depends on the team. QuantVault also describes a recruiter call where candidates are matched to a team before the technical rounds. An undated GeeksforGeeks account of a campus strategist hire (page last updated March 2023, the candidate's contest wins date to 2012) describes a written test, then 3 interviews on one day of math puzzles and algorithm or proof questions, with eliminations after each round. A June 2026 PracHub report of a US quantitative analyst loop says it had five rounds covering probability, puzzles, computer architecture, networks and OS, but lists no questions.

Stage 9:

Team match after offer

several days

Prep sites say that after an offer, candidates talk with the teams that want them, and pay and day-to-day work can differ by team. QuantVault instead places team matching in an early recruiter call, before the technical rounds.

A tag is the condition given in brackets in the stage name.

02 / What Tower Research Capital scores

The framework.

Qualities Tower says it always looks for (careers page)

  1. 01

    Entrepreneurial spirit

  2. 02

    PASSION

  3. 03

    CLEAR COMMUNICATION

  4. 04

    CALM AND FOCUS

Tower's careers page (https://tower-research.com/careers/) introduces these four items with the sentence "That said, there are a few qualities we always look for." The item names are copied exactly as the page shows them, mixed capitalization included, and the page lists exactly four.

The page's descriptions are: Entrepreneurial spirit (embrace innovative ideas, learn new things, make an impact), PASSION (for technology, the markets and maximizing your potential), CLEAR COMMUNICATION (within your team and cross-functionally) and CALM AND FOCUS (when the unexpected occurs). This is a short list of traits, not a published scoring rubric. Tower's Quantitative Trading page (https://tower-research.com/quantitative-trading/) shows a related but different list under "Qualities We Prize": DRIVE, CLEAR COMMUNICATION, FLEXIBILITY, CALM AND FOCUS.

Read the rest of the framework notes

The careers-page list is used here because it is the general hiring page. Under "A Practical Process", the careers page says the firm aims for a straightforward process with no gotcha questions, random logic problems or abstract, overly academic discussions, but candidate reports still describe puzzle rounds and deep OS and C++ questioning.

The one link below between a question and a quality (a motivation question to PASSION) is an inference from that item's description about the markets, not something Tower publishes.

Roles in the full set

Roles are grouped by the category each question fits, not by the source. Switching roles is part of Interview Prep, included with Career. The counts show what each role holds in the full set.

  1. Sample question, Coding

Alien Dictionary: given words and an alien alphabet, check the words against a given letter order, or derive the letter order from the sorted words.

Tests letter-rank lookup and adjacent-word comparison, or topological sort when the order must be derived.

  2. Sample question, Systems fundamentals

What is the TLB and why is it used? Is the TLB or the cache accessed first, and can they be accessed in parallel? What are huge pages?

Tests address translation: TLB before cache, why a TLB hit avoids a page walk, and why huge pages need fewer entries.

  3. Sample question, Behavioral and motivation

Tell me about a time you disagreed with a senior colleague about a system design or research decision.
