01 / For every Strategy& candidate

The process, start to finish.

Strategy& is the strategy consulting business of the PwC network, built on Booz & Company, which PwC acquired in 2014. This playbook covers the generalist strategy consulting track (Associate, Consultant, Senior Consultant and MBA hires), which is what the firm is best known for. Each Strategy& territory runs its own recruiting, and the official UK FAQ says each territory "has its own recruitment process". The format therefore varies by office.

Across the official pages reviewed, the pattern is an online application (Amsterdam asks for a CV, transcripts and a cover letter, the UK for a CV and personal statement, and the US MBA track for a resume only), an online assessment in several territories (Amsterdam, UK and Poland internships; the US MBA page does not mention one), and then usually two interview rounds, with about 45 to 60 minutes per interview where a duration is stated.

Interviews typically mix personal fit questions with a case, which the Amsterdam page says is usually based on a real client engagement the interviewer has worked on. Official pages describe interviewers only as consultants (Amsterdam round one) and seniors (Amsterdam round two); coaching sources name managers, principals or senior associates in round one and directors and partners in the final round. Some offices differ. London's first round has one unstructured case and one structured case with a slide pack.

Amsterdam runs three 60-minute interviews in each of two rounds. The Middle East page describes three to four 45-minute interviews in total. The US MBA track runs one round of three virtual interviews. Poland's consultant track opens with an HR phone interview and typically has three meetings with management. Written cases or presentations appear only in coaching sources, and some experienced hires get a third round. No single global interview scorecard is published on the pages reviewed.

Strategy& Netherlands publishes three personal-fit areas under "The interviews": LEAD SELF, LEAD OTHERS and MOTIVATION. These are used as the framework here and are an Amsterdam-office list. Strategy& US tells MBA candidates to review the PwC Professional framework, but its page does not list the dimensions, and the PwC pages that do are not drawn on here. Public sample questions come mostly from coaching and prep sites, and first-hand candidate reports (Glassdoor) are not drawn on.

Stage 1:

Online application

about 10 working days to hear back (Amsterdam); varies elsewhere
CV or resume plus cover letter or personal statement, depending on office

Applicants submit through the territory's careers portal, and the official Careers FAQ says the first step is to decide which country you will join and use its local recruiting site. Amsterdam asks for a CV, academic transcripts and a cover letter and says it replies in about 10 working days. The UK graduate page and FAQ ask for a CV and personal statement, the UK experienced-professional page asks for a CV and cover letter, and the UK FAQ says you can only apply for one job within PwC UK within a six-month window. The US MBA track asks for a current resume and says a cover letter is not required. A RocketBlocks guide by an ex-Strategy& consultant, published July 2022, says portal applicants can expect to hear back in 4 to 6 weeks. Response times therefore vary by office and source.

Stage 2:

Online assessment

about 60 minutes (Amsterdam); varies by office

Amsterdam says matching candidates are invited to complete a two-part cognitive and behavior assessment of about 60 minutes 'within one week' (the page does not make clear whether that is the invitation time or the deadline), recommends a practice test first and sends a report of the outcome afterwards. The UK requires an online assessment after the application. The Poland internship track uses a game-based assessment of no more than 15 minutes, then a HireVue English test. The US MBA page and the Poland consultant page do not mention an assessment. A PrepLounge guide describes numerical reasoning, a games-based assessment and a video interview totalling over 2 hours and spread across about four weeks, which does not match the Amsterdam description. Content and length vary by office and level.

Stage 3:

Recruiter or HR call and interview preparation

varies

Strategy& Poland starts consultant and senior consultant hires with an HR phone interview about reasons for changing jobs, reasons for applying and development plans. Amsterdam has a recruiter call to schedule interviews, a practice case with a consultant and an assigned consultant buddy. Whether this stage exists varies by office.

Stage 4:

First round interviews (fit plus case)

varies by office: London 2 interviews of c.45 minutes; Amsterdam 3 interviews of 60 minutes; Middle East 3 to 4 interviews of 45 minutes in total; US MBA 3 interviews, length not stated

London runs two back-to-back interviews of c.45 minutes, virtual or in person. One is an unstructured case that opens with questions about background, experience and motivation. The other is a structured case with a slide pack from a real client project and c.10 minutes to review it. Amsterdam runs three 60-minute interviews with consultants that mix personal fit and case; the page says the case makes up about half of the interview time and it tries to reserve the last 5-10 minutes for your questions. The Middle East page says its process includes a total of three to four 45-minute interviews and that both sessions include a real-world case discussion. The US MBA track uses a single round of three virtual interviews driven by the practice team, each with a case and a behavioral component. Coaches on PrepLounge (Dubai thread, August 2025) say round one is run by managers, principals or senior associates, RoadToOffer says managers and senior associates, and a RocketBlocks guide says managers.

Stage 5:

Final round interviews with senior staff

Amsterdam: 3 interviews of 60 minutes; other offices not stated on official pages (coaching sources say 2-3 interviews of about 45-60 minutes)

In the UK the second round is either the same day (in-person full-day assessment) or a separate assessment day; the FAQ gives no interview count or length. Amsterdam's second round is three similar 60-minute fit-and-case interviews with seniors. Official pages reviewed do not name directors or partners for any round. Coaching sources (PrepLounge Dubai thread, RoadToOffer, RocketBlocks, CaseBasix) describe directors, principals or partners, cases that are more open than in round one, and more weight on fit. A 2016 PrepLounge reply describing the German interview day says feedback is given at the end of the day and successful candidates may get an offer then; it is a community-management description, not a first-hand account.

Stage 6:

Written case or presentation (some offices)

varies

Not universal and not described on any official page reviewed. A PrepLounge community-management reply from 2016 describing the German interview day gives about 25 minutes to work through a problem from given material and about 10 minutes to present and take questions. CaseBasix describes 45-60 minutes to build a 3-5 slide deck, then a 20-30 minute discussion. RoadToOffer mentions a 48-hour take-home written case in some offices. Ask the recruiter whether your office uses one.

office-specific

Stage 7:

Additional round for experienced hires

varies

The UK FAQ and the UK experienced-professionals page say some experienced hires may be asked to complete a third round of interviews. Strategy& Poland says its consultant and senior consultant process typically consists of three meetings with management after the HR phone interview, and that a business case is typically, but not necessarily, part of the conversation. Depends on level and office.

experienced hires only

Stage 8:

Feedback and offer

within about three weeks of the interview day (US MBA); varies elsewhere

Strategy& US aims to give MBA candidates an offer decision within three weeks of the interview day, with the offer letter by email about a week after the verbal offer. Amsterdam says candidates receive feedback after the first round and again with the offer decision. A 2016 PrepLounge reply on the German interview day reports feedback at the end of the day and possible same-day offers, and HackingTheCaseInterview says some European and Middle East offices give feedback the same afternoon. Both of those are non-official. HackingTheCaseInterview also cites a Glassdoor average of about 38 days from application to decision; treat that figure as second-hand.

  3. 03

    MOTIVATION

Published on the Strategy& Netherlands (Amsterdam) recruitment process page under "The interviews" as three headings. The page says each interview includes a general discussion of your background, covering leadership, team skills and other experiences, and an assessment of your motivation for consulting in general and for Strategy& specifically. Wording under the headings: LEAD SELF: develop and learn through every opportunity, take care of your own wellbeing and remain steady under pressure.

LEAD OTHERS: know when and how to lead, be part of a team, get things done, and handle and drive transformational change. MOTIVATION: choosing consulting, and continuously deepening and broadening your understanding of how business works, how it is changing and why this matters. The same page says the case portion assesses problem-solving and analytical skills, and that interviewers focus on approach and way of thinking rather than the answer.

Read the rest of the framework notes

Its checklist is: understand the question and build a framework, use hypotheses and stay in the lead, work your numbers, articulate your assumptions, stick to the question, synthesise your findings. This is an Amsterdam-office publication and is not a global scorecard, so other offices may assess differently.

Strategy& US tells MBA candidates to review the PwC Professional framework, but that page does not list its dimensions, and the PwC pages that list them are not drawn on here, so the dimensions are not reproduced.
