01 / For every Rothschild & Co candidate

The process, start to finish.

This playbook covers analyst and summer analyst hiring in Global Advisory (M&A, debt advisory and restructuring), the track Rothschild & Co is best known for. The firm also hires into Wealth Management, Asset Management, Five Arrows (private equity and private debt), Rothschild & Co Redburn and Support, but those are not covered here.

Rothschild & Co's own graduate and internship pages give three steps: an online application, a first-round interview (online or in person) covering experiences, skills and motivations, and an assessment centre with a further interview with senior colleagues, a collaborative group exercise and a case study. The student FAQ adds an untimed online assessment that has to be completed when one is part of the application, and a cap of seven applications per recruitment cycle worldwide.

Third-party guides fill in the format. In the UK, the first round is reported as a 30 to 45 minute live interview, and guides describe a half-day or full-day assessment centre for the UK and Europe. In the US, a first round with a VP, by phone or on campus, leads to a superday of roughly 3 to 5 interviews.

Counting the online assessment, candidates describe about three to four stages after applying, and some guides add a recorded video interview or an extra interview round. The firm publishes a "What we look for" list of seven qualities, reproduced below; it is a statement of desired qualities, not a published scoring rubric. Every sample question here comes from third-party prep sites and coach answers, and none comes from a firm-published question list.

Only the Jobmentis questions carry an individual "I was asked this" tag, and that page describes a process run in French; PrepLounge presents its question bank as reported by past candidates without tagging each question. Most guides include firm-specific motivation questions, such as independent advisory versus balance-sheet banks, and Rothschild versus Lazard, Evercore or the bulge brackets.

Stage 1:

Online application

varies

CV and cover letter go through the careers portal (the official FAQ refers to both; PrepLounge also mentions a transcript). UK applications reportedly also need written answers to motivation questions. The official FAQ caps applications at seven per recruitment cycle worldwide (the same programme in different regions counts separately), says duplicate profiles under different email addresses are not considered and only the first application submitted is reviewed, and says that for many opportunities the vacancy closes once all positions are filled, so early application is advised. Opening and closing dates are not given on the student pages; the FAQ points to the Search Opportunities page for each role, so timing varies by role and region.

Stage 2:

Online assessment

untimed (per official FAQ); links can take up to 3 working days to arrive

The official FAQ says the online assessment is not timed, has no extensions, and must be completed for the application to be considered when one is part of the application, so it is not stated to apply to every role. A result from an earlier application in the same year can be reused unless stated otherwise. The official graduate and internship pages do not list this stage. Third-party guides describe SHL-style numerical reasoning and situational judgement tests (Extern names numerical and logical reasoning, and ResumeGeni also lists a behavioural assessment). ResumeGeni gives the numerical test 20 to 25 minutes, which conflicts with the FAQ's untimed statement.

Sources disagree on test timing and on whether a recorded video interview (HireVue) comes before the live first round.

Stage 3:

First-round interview

30-45 minutes

Officially, this round is online or in person at an office and covers experiences, skills and motivations. In the UK it is reportedly a single live video interview with an Associate or VP (Intervyo), and PrepLounge adds a 30 minute competency interview or a 45 minute online group interview with four candidates. In the US it is reported as a one-on-one, often with a VP and heavier on technicals (PrepLounge), held on campus for core schools and by phone for others (Wall Street Prep, an article last updated December 2023); Extern instead gives the US first round as 30 minutes by phone or HireVue. Coaches describe a mix of motivation questions and core technicals (DCF, comps, precedents, three-statement links).

Stage 4:

Assessment centre (UK/Europe) or superday (US)

half day to full day

Officially: a further interview with senior colleagues, a collaborative group exercise and a case study. Third-party guides add 45-minute behavioural and technical interviews, an individual written or Excel case with a 60 to 90 minute work window and a verbal defence, and a senior MD or Partner interview (Intervyo), or a group discussion, individual case, group case and final one-on-one with a senior banker (ResumeGeni). Extern reports a half day with 60 minutes of case prep. SuperdayAI describes a full day of roughly 8 to 12 hours for Paris, with the interview count given as 4 to 6, 4 to 5 and 3 to 5 in different places on the same page. US superdays are reported as 3 to 5 back-to-back interviews with VPs and MDs. Format varies by office and division.

Stage 5:

Offer decision

1-2 weeks after the final round

Extern and SuperdayAI give 1 to 2 weeks after the final round (SuperdayAI refers to its Paris superday). Overall length varies by source: PrepLounge says candidates report roughly one to two months from the start of formal interviewing to an offer, Extern estimates 8 to 12 weeks from application to offer in the US, and ResumeGeni gives 3 to 8 weeks from application, up to 90 days for analyst roles. This is not an official stage.

Sources give different overall timelines from application to offer.
