01 / For every Moelis & Company candidate

The process, start to finish.

Moelis & Company is an independent advisory investment bank. This playbook covers its best-known track: campus investment banking recruiting for Summer Analysts (undergraduate) and Summer Associates (MBA), mainly in the US. Moelis's own careers page splits campus recruiting into an application process and an interview process.

The application process is a one-page resume through the student application website (cover letter not required, up to two applications), plus the Suited Assessment for US and UK candidates, which takes about 30 minutes and measures more than 50 traits linked to investment banking success. The interview process is one to two first-round interviews with investment bankers (technical and behavioral), then an onsite final round with multiple senior bankers for second-round candidates.

This playbook lists the Suited Assessment as its own stage for clarity, although Moelis files it under application. Third-party guides add detail. First-round interviews run about 20 to 30 minutes, usually by phone or video, with junior bankers. The final round (Superday) is 3 to 5 back-to-back interviews of about 30 minutes each, usually in person at a Moelis office; some guides say 4 to 6, and one says it can be virtual when geography requires.

Guides put the whole process at about 20 days on average, 2 to 3 weeks, or 4 to 6 weeks from application to offer. Technicals cover accounting, valuation, M&A math and LBOs. One guide says Moelis summer analyst technicals also reach capital structure and downside scenarios (liquidation valuation, debt waterfalls) that many bulge bracket screens save for full-time hiring, while saying restructuring questions appear less consistently than accounting and valuation.

Moelis publishes a list of six qualities it wants candidates to show; it is listed in the Evaluation Framework section below. It is not described as a formal interview scorecard. Moelis says the interview process for experienced professionals "varies by role"; those processes are not covered here. Candidate self-reports (Wall Street Oasis, Glassdoor) are not included, so the question bank comes mostly from prep and coaching sites.

Stage 1:

Online application

varies

Resume submitted through the Moelis student application website. Moelis says one page, cover letters are not required, and candidates may submit up to two applications; if invited to interview for more than one role, you choose one to continue. Moelis says timelines vary by location, university and program, and gives typical opening months: US Summer Analyst December of sophomore year, US Summer Associate October before the internship, London and Beijing August for internships starting the following year, Hong Kong May for internships starting the following year. Moelis files the Suited Assessment for US and UK candidates under this application step.

Stage 2:

Suited Assessment (US and UK applicants)

About 30 minutes

Moelis says to set aside 30 minutes of uninterrupted time. Per the firm, it measures more than 50 traits linked to investment banking success, including attention to detail, critical reasoning and logical thinking. You take it once and can share the result with other firms that request it. One prep guide splits it into an untimed psychometric part (about 20 minutes) and a timed competencies part (about 15 minutes); those parts add to more than the 30 minutes Moelis states. Three guides say a US or UK application is incomplete, or not considered, without the Suited score. Guides disagree on timing: one says complete it at application before Moelis reviews it, another says the invitation arrives 1 to 2 weeks after you apply.

Guides disagree on whether Suited is completed with the application or 1 to 2 weeks after submitting it.

Stage 3:

First-round interviews

About 20 to 30 minutes each per guides, 1 to 2 interviews

Moelis says candidates have one to two first-round interviews with investment bankers, covering technical and behavioral assessments; it does not state their length or format. Prep guides say these are about 30 minutes (one says 20 to 30), by phone or video, with analysts or associates. One guide says to expect about two short behavioral questions and then technicals for the rest of the time; others describe a resume walkthrough, why investment banking and why Moelis, then 2 to 3 technical questions. One guide says some offices add a separate technical screen of about 45 minutes. Another says the round comes 2 to 4 weeks after the assessment.

Stage 4:

Final round (Superday)

3 to 5 back-to-back interviews of about 30 minutes each, per guides

Moelis says second-round candidates attend an onsite final round, meeting multiple senior bankers who further evaluate knowledge and capabilities; it gives no interview count or length. Prep guides report 3 to 5 back-to-back interviews of about 30 minutes each with bankers from analyst to Managing Director, and some say 4 to 6; day length is given as 3 to 4 hours by one guide and as a full day of 8 to 12 hours by another. Two guides say junior bankers tend to test technicals while senior bankers focus on fit, market awareness and commercial instinct. One guide says a live case study (a short deck and about 30 minutes) appears in some Superdays; other guides mention case studies without describing them as live or timed. One guide places US Superdays at the New York office (399 Park Avenue); another says Superdays are in person at Moelis offices, or virtual if geographic constraints exist.

Sources disagree on the number of Superday interviews (3 to 5 versus 4 to 6), the length of the day, whether it can be virtual, and whether a case study is included.

Stage 5:

Offer

Same day to 48 hours of the Superday per most guides; within one week per two guides

Moelis does not publish offer timing. Three guides say decisions usually come within 24 to 48 hours of the Superday (one says same day to 48 hours). One of them gives 3 to 7 days in its FAQ, and another guide says within one week. Two guides add a 1 to 2 week deadline to decide.

Offer timing comes only from third-party guides and they differ.

The campus recruiting page adds: "Most importantly, be authentic: We value curiosity, drive, and enthusiasm." It also tells candidates to review the firm's vision and values and its recent news and transactions, and to do mock interviews that include contributing to market discussions.

Roles are grouped by the category each question fits, not by the source. Switching roles is part of Interview Prep, included with Career. The counts show what each role holds in the full set.

  1. Sample question, Behavioral

Tell me about a time you had to be persistent in the face of repeated obstacles. What kept you going and what was the outcome?

  2. Sample question, Accounting and valuation

    Walk me through a DCF.

Tests the DCF chain: project unlevered free cash flow, discount at WACC, add terminal value, then bridge EV to equity value.

  3. Sample question, M&A and deal judgment

A deal is dilutive by 10 cents per share. The buyer has 100M shares and a 20% tax rate. What pretax synergies are needed to break even?

    Tests accretion/dilution breakeven: gross up the after-tax shortfall (10 cents x 100M shares = 10M) by 1 / (1 - 20%) to get 12.5M.
