Interview Playbook / Consulting
How McKinsey & Company Interviews in 2026: Process, Questions & What They Score
Compiled from 32 public sources: candidate interview reports, coaching guides, and McKinsey & Company's own hiring pages. Interview processes change and vary by role, team, level, and region. This is one well-documented shape of McKinsey & Company's interviews to prepare against, not a script of what your interview will be. Confirm specifics with your recruiter. SupaCV is not affiliated with or endorsed by McKinsey & Company.
McKinsey's hiring process for generalist consulting roles (Business Analyst / Associate) runs through resume screening, a gamified digital assessment (McKinsey Solve), a short recruiter screen, and two rounds of structured interviews (first round and final/partner round). Every interview blends a business case with a Personal Experience Interview (PEI) segment; McKinsey does not split these into separate "case-only" and "PEI-only" interviews, so candidates need to be case-ready and story-ready in the same 45-60 minutes. Independent sources consistently describe the full process as taking roughly 5-8 weeks end to end; Glassdoor's aggregated candidate-reported data (thousands of submissions) puts the average at about 40 days from application to offer, which checks out and is one of the more reliable numbers in this profile. Exact stage count, interviewer seniority, and timing vary by office/region and by whether the role is generalist consulting vs. a specialist track (e.g., McKinsey Digital). McKinsey publishes official practice cases and an "Interviewing at McKinsey" guide, and in summer 2025 it renamed and restructured its PEI evaluation dimensions, which is reflected below and corroborated across multiple independent prep sources. Case-evaluation criteria (structure, math, insight, synthesis, communication) are consistently described across independent prep sources but are not published by McKinsey as a single named, branded list the way the PEI dimensions are; that distinction is called out explicitly so you don't over-index on a "framework" that isn't officially McKinsey's own.
The Process
- 1
Resume / CV screening · Ongoing/rolling; no fixed interview time
Automated and recruiter screening for academic achievement (GPA thresholds vary by office), leadership experience, and evidence of impact/extracurriculars.
- 2
McKinsey Solve (digital assessment, formerly 'Imbellus' / 'Problem Solving Game') · ~65 minutes (two modules) to ~85 minutes (three modules), depending on which are assigned
A gamified assessment taken online, not timed question-by-question but bounded overall. Most candidates get two modules: 'Sea Wolf' (an ecosystem/optimization simulation, ~30 min) and 'Red Rock Study' (a data-driven case study, ~35 min), while some candidates' invitations include a third, newer module, 'Sustainable Futures Lab' (a ~20-minute behavioral/stakeholder scenario). Which combination you get depends on your invitation rather than a strict office rule. McKinsey states it measures Critical Thinking, Decision Making, Metacognition, Situational Awareness, and Systems Thinking rather than business knowledge, and scores both the final answer (product) and how the candidate worked through it (process). Independent sources put the pass-through rate at roughly 25-35% of takers, with more competitive offices reportedly setting a higher bar.
- 3
Recruiter screen · 15-20 minutes
A short call to verify resume details and gauge motivation ('Why consulting?', 'Why McKinsey?'). More of a confirmation step than a substantive interview.
- 4
First-round interviews · ~45-60 minutes per interview (roughly 25-30 min case + 15-20 min PEI); 2 interviews total
Typically two separate interviews, usually virtual, conducted by Business Analysts, Associates, or Engagement Managers. Each interview pairs one case (interviewer-led, McKinsey controls the pace) with one PEI segment covering one or more of the four PEI dimensions. Cases here tend to be more foundational/structured.
- 5
Final-round ('partner') interviews · ~45-60 minutes per interview; 2-3 interviews total
Two to three (occasionally up to four) interviews with Partners and Associate Partners. Format mirrors first round (case + PEI per interview) but cases are often drawn from real client work, carry more ambiguity, and interviewers weigh business judgment and 'client-readiness' more heavily.
- 6
Decision / offer · Often within ~1-2 weeks of the final round, though this varies by office
Debrief among interviewers; a verbal offer commonly follows within days of the final round, with a written offer after. Pass-through estimates vary a fair amount across independent sources, so treat any single number as directional, not precise: roughly 25-35% of first-round candidates are most commonly cited as advancing to the final round; final-round-to-offer estimates are far less consistent, with some sources citing ~20-30% and others citing 50-70%, likely reflecting differences by office, role, and cohort.
Evaluation Framework
Personal Experience Interview (PEI) - Four Dimensions, plus Case-Interview assessment criteria
The PEI four-dimension framework is McKinsey's own named evaluation model for the behavioral portion of every interview. It is corroborated across numerous independent prep sources (IGotAnOffer, RoadToOffer, StrategyCase, HackingTheCaseInterview, ManagementConsulted, MECE Academy) as having been renamed and restructured in summer 2025: 'Problem Solving' (previously one of the named PEI qualities alongside the four above) was removed from the PEI grid and is now assessed exclusively via the case interview. Direct verification against McKinsey's own careers page (mckinsey.com/careers/interviewing) and its official Solve FAQ PDF was attempted multiple times but both repeatedly timed out on fetch; search-engine snippets of the McKinsey careers page do corroborate a four-area PEI structure and 'personal experience interview, followed by a problem-solving interview' framing, which is consistent with this framework, but the exact current dimension names could not be pulled as a direct quote from McKinsey's own site. Treat this as well-corroborated secondary reporting rather than a verbatim citation. Separately, the case-interview portion is commonly described by prep sources as being judged on structure/MECE-ness, quantitative (math) skills, insight/creativity, synthesis and communication, and coachability, but unlike the PEI dimensions, McKinsey does not appear to publish this as a single official named list, so it should be treated as consistent third-party characterization rather than a formal branded framework. The Solve digital-assessment traits (Critical Thinking, Decision Making, Metacognition, Situational Awareness, Systems Thinking) are attributed to McKinsey by prep sources as the game's explicit design goals.

Coach's Tips
Treat the PEI as equally weighted with the case: a strong case cannot offset a weak PEI (and vice versa). Prepare 8-12 stories (roughly 2-3 per dimension: Connection, Drive, Leadership, Growth) using a five-part structure (situation, your role, actions, obstacles, quantified outcome), each ready to open in 1.5-2 minutes and to withstand 3-5 follow-up probes like 'What did you learn?' or 'What would you do differently?'
Build every case structure to be MECE (mutually exclusive, collectively exhaustive) and specific to the prompt rather than a memorized template; interviewers at McKinsey reportedly expect deeper frameworks (3-5 buckets with 2-3 sub-points each) than at some peer firms.
Work hypothesis-driven, not exhaustive: state an early hypothesis ('I suspect this is a pricing issue because revenue fell while volume held steady'), use it to decide what data to request next, and revise it openly as new facts arrive; this is repeatedly cited as what separates 'drove the case' feedback from 'limited personal impact' feedback.
Practice on McKinsey's own official released cases (Diconsa, Electro-Light, GlobaPharm, National Education, Talbot Trucks, Beautify, and Shops Corporation; these are seven distinct cases, not variations of one another) since interviewers frequently draw style and pacing directly from them, and McKinsey itself points candidates to them as prep material.
Don't underestimate the Solve digital assessment: it has no business-knowledge component but is reported to screen out roughly 65-75% of takers; do a few practice runs of the Sea Wolf and Red Rock Study formats beforehand (and the newer Sustainable Futures Lab module if your invite mentions an 85-minute window) so the controls and pacing aren't a surprise on test day.
For 'Why McKinsey,' avoid generic prestige answers: name 2-3 specific, personally-grounded reasons (e.g., a particular practice area, apprenticeship model, or alumni conversation) and tie them explicitly back to your own goals; interviewers are reported to penalize answers that could apply to any top consultancy.
