01 / For every Jefferies candidate
The process, start to finish.
Jefferies' students and graduates page lists opportunities in investment banking, fixed income, equities, research, wealth management and corporate divisions. This playbook covers the investment banking analyst and summer analyst track, which is the one Jefferies is best known for. Prep guides describe a common path: an online application, online assessments (SHL-style numerical, verbal and logical reasoning, plus a personality or situational questionnaire in some guides), a HireVue recorded video on some paths, a phone screen and/or first-round interview with an analyst or associate, and a superday of several back-to-back one-on-one interviews.
Some guides add a case study presentation to the superday, but they do not say which offices. The order and whether a HireVue is used vary by office, division and year. Guides list technical questions on accounting, DCF, LBO and enterprise value; fit questions centred on "why Jefferies" versus a bulge bracket; and, in some guides, extra weight on leveraged finance and sector knowledge. Jefferies' careers pages do not describe interview stages, durations or a scoring rubric.
The official students and graduates page does publish lists headed "What we look for in candidates" (one for summer internships, one for the full-time Analyst and Associate program), and the four-item full-time list is used here as the framework. It describes what the firm wants in candidates, not a documented interview scorecard. Every process detail here comes from prep and coaching sites, which sometimes disagree, rather than from Glassdoor or Wall Street Oasis candidate reports.
Stage 1: Online application
varies
Submitted through the Jefferies job portal (jefferies.tal.net, which the official students and graduates page links to), a campus channel or a referral. Two guides say review is rolling. One prep publisher (Finbound) says Jefferies allows one application per recruiting season globally and does not review duplicates; Jefferies' own pages do not state that rule. Timing depends on region and program year: one guide's US calendar has applications opening March to June of sophomore year, and another guide says UK windows run from late summer into autumn.
Stage 2: Online assessments
varies
No source states a length. One UK guide describes SHL-style numerical, verbal and logical (inductive/deductive) reasoning tests plus a personality or situational judgement questionnaire, used as a pass/fail gate; another UK vendor names SHL Verify G+. PrepLounge names only numerical and verbal reasoning tests. One guide instead describes cognitive games (pymetrics) bundled with the HireVue. The tests differ between guides.
Stage 3: HireVue recorded video interview
varies; one UK prep vendor reports 5-6 questions, 30 seconds prep, 90 seconds per answer and a 72-hour window to finish, while another guide reports 3 questions
Used on some campus paths, not all. The vendor figures are unverified and a second guide conflicts on the number of questions. The same vendor reports no retakes and a reply between 48 hours and 3 weeks. One guide places the HireVue after the SHL tests; another says it sits before or alongside live screens. Prompts cover motivation, behavioral stories, CV walkthrough, commercial awareness and light technicals.
Not on every path; format figures come from a single prep vendor and conflict with another guide
Stage 4: Phone screen
about 30 minutes
Covers background, motivation for finance and interest in Jefferies. Some candidates report one call, others two. Only PrepLounge lists this as a stage separate from the first-round interview; other guides describe a phone or video first round without a separate screen.
Listed as a separate stage by one publisher only
Stage 5: First-round interview
about 20-30 minutes per interview; 1-2 interviews
Virtual, phone or in person, with an analyst, associate or VP (one source says HR). Mostly behavioral, with basic technicals such as accounting, the three statements and DCF. An optional second round with more senior or group-specific interviewers is reported on some paths.
Stage 6: Superday / final round
half day to full day; interviews about 30 minutes each; case study about 1 hour prep then a presentation
Guides report 3 to 6 back-to-back one-on-one interviews, mixing technical, behavioral and market questions. Interviewers are named as VPs, directors and MDs by two guides; one guide says directors and MDs only. Some guides add group exercises or a case study, where everyone in the group usually presents the same case; another says summer analysts are more likely to get a verbal case, and another says some interviewers give a mini-case. Sources disagree on the number of interviews (3, 3-5, 4-5, 4-6), and the sources do not say which offices differ.
Stage 7: Offer decision
24-48 hours to 1-2 weeks after the superday; 2 weeks to 2 months end to end
Guides disagree. Offers are reported within 24-48 hours after the superday by two guides and within one to two weeks by another. End-to-end estimates range from 2-3 weeks once in the pipeline, to 2-4 weeks, to 4-6 weeks from first-round interviews, to one to two months from application. Summer analysts get formal performance reviews and may be considered for a full-time offer.
Reported interview time, one scale in minutes
Where the minutes go
- Phone screen~30 min
- First-round interview~20 to 30 min
- Superday / final round~30 min
Not drawn: Online application, Online assessments, HireVue recorded video interview and Offer decision, whose durations are not given in minutes.
02 / What Jefferies scores
The framework.
What we look for in candidates (Full-time Analyst & Associate program)
01
Demonstrate the highest level of professionalism, ethics and client management skills.
02
Manage multiple projects simultaneously, under pressure and with adherence to tight deadlines.
03
Possess strong technical, written and verbal communication skills.
04
Work independently and as a member of a team.
Copied word for word from the list introduced by "Additionally, you should be able to:" under "What we look for in candidates" in the Full-time Analyst & Associate program section of the Jefferies students and graduates page (https://www.jefferies.com/careers/students-and-graduates/; the older Summer-Analyst/2cr/828 link redirects to it). That list has four items. The same page has a separate "What we look for in candidates" section under Summer internships for Analysts & Associates.
That one is not a list with a lead-in: it is an opening paragraph (energetic and enthusiastic individuals with a strong academic background, an interest in a finance career, the ability to work independently and in teams) followed by two bullets (multitasking and managing a variety of projects in a team-oriented environment; the highest levels of professionalism with strong analytical skills and attention to detail).

Only the four-item full-time list is used as the framework; the summer wording is summarised here. Jefferies does not publish how interviewers score against these items.
03 / Coach's notes
Coach's tips.
01
Build a specific answer to why Jefferies over a bulge bracket. One guide frames Jefferies' independence as a strength that avoids conflicts and improves client outcomes, and advises against presenting Jefferies as a second choice to the bulge brackets. Tie your answer to the sector or product you want.
02
Prepare leveraged finance and credit basics as well as standard DCF and LBO technicals: high-yield bonds versus leveraged loans, loan syndication and basic credit analysis. Two prep guides single out leveraged finance as a Jefferies strength.
03
Know recent Jefferies deals and the sector of the group you are applying to. One guide lists "Tell me about a recent transaction Jefferies did" and an oil and gas sector question, and another stresses healthcare, technology, industrials or energy knowledge.
04
Submit one application only, early, to the listing that matches your CV. One prep publisher reports a single global application per season with duplicates not reviewed, and two guides say review is rolling. Jefferies' own pages do not state the one-application rule, so check the listing's terms.
05
If you get a HireVue, expect short prep per question and a limited completion window. One prep vendor reports 30 seconds to prepare, 90 seconds to answer, no retakes and a 72-hour window to finish; another guide reports 3 questions. Rehearse your why Jefferies, CV and a few STAR stories in timed form and read your invitation for the real format.
06
Build stamina for a superday of several back-to-back 30-minute interviews. One guide describes a case study where everyone presents the same case after about an hour of preparation, so practise structuring a short presentation as well as the technicals.
