01 / For every Grant Thornton candidate

The process, start to finish.

Grant Thornton is a network of independent member firms providing audit, tax and advisory services, and each member firm runs its own hiring. This playbook covers the track the firm is best known for in public recruiting material: early-careers (graduate, trainee, school leaver, intern) hiring into audit, tax and advisory.

The UK member firm is the main reference because it publishes the most complete process; Australia and Greece are noted where they differ, and the US firm publishes no interview process. The official UK page lists: an online application form, a short Neurosight strengths assessment (under 5 minutes), an AI-enabled case study (about 50 minutes, with a coaching call offered beforehand), a virtual group exercise, and a final-round experience day that includes an interview with senior people from the chosen service line.

The firm promises detailed feedback after the final outcome. Candidate reports and prep guides also describe a recorded video interview and a timed 20 to 22 minute written case study; the official UK page lists neither, and it is unclear whether they were replaced or still run for some programmes. Australia uses a 30-40 minute strengths and cognitive assessment, a 10-15 minute video interview, and a half-day assessment centre with a service-line interview.

The UK interview guide says the firm moved from competency-based to strengths-based questions (a mix is possible) and suggests STARE or STARR answers that end with reflection. The UK firm publishes seven competencies it will look for evidence of at every stage of the application; these are used as the framework below. It also publishes three values, named in the notes below the framework. No scoring rubric or pass mark is published.

Other member firms and several prep guides use the global CLEARR values instead. The question bank leans on official guidance plus commercial prep sites rather than candidate-report sites such as Prosple, Bright Network, Indeed and Wall Street Oasis, and only part of the bank is confirmed by candidates.

Stage 1:

Online application form

no more than 20 minutes (UK employability hub)

Short form with a few questions to get to know you and understand why you would like to join. UK: you can ask for reasonable adjustments on the form, and you can opt into the positive action scheme for enhanced coaching (the employability hub says the enhanced coaching is for applicants with a disability). The UK accepts one trainee application per year, and roles are filled as applications arrive, so apply early. Australia: CV and most recent academic transcript, with a first and second service-line preference; cover letter optional.

Stage 2:

Online strengths assessment

under 5 minutes (UK); 30-40 minutes (Australia)

UK: a Neurosight assessment designed to measure the strengths which enable high performance in a trainee role. No significant preparation needed; trust your instincts. A personalised report of your top strengths follows. Australia: the Grant Thornton Strength Assessment covers cognitive ability and behavioural strengths, with a feedback report within 24-48 hours, and can be taken only once every 12 months. Greece: an older page (under the site's career-old path) describes two online questionnaires plus a testing session of about 2 hours (logic and maths); the current Greek careers FAQ does not mention tests, so this may be out of date.

Stage 3:

Recorded video interview

10-15 minutes (Australia); varies elsewhere

Australia (official): one warm-up question and three assessed questions, judged on communication, answer structure and response quality; the video interview can be taken only once every 12 months. Greece: the current careers FAQ lists a video interview after application screening, with no format given. UK: a March 2024 Glassdoor review describes a competency-based video interview after the strengths test, a 2015 article quoting a Grant Thornton UK resourcing officer says video interviews had replaced phone interviews, and a prep site describes a HireVue round, but the current official UK page does not list this stage.

Stage not on the current official UK process page; present in Australia, in the current Greek FAQ and in earlier UK reports

Stage 4:

Case study (AI-enabled on the current official UK page)

about 50 minutes (UK official, AI-enabled); 20-22 minutes for the written version (candidate reports and prep guides)

Current official UK format: you are invited to book a coaching call with the early careers recruitment team first, then you review business materials, write a recommendation using a built-in AI tool (up to 10 prompts), and record two short videos. It looks at analytical skills, critical reasoning, written communication, and judgement about when to rely on AI and when to question it. Written version: a March 2024 Glassdoor review says 22 minutes to analyse 6-7 tabs and write; a July 2026 review also says the case lasted 22 minutes with no time to review the answer; Graduates First says about 20 minutes. The official page does not say the written version was retired.

Official UK page describes a 50-minute AI-enabled case; a July 2026 Glassdoor review and third-party guides still describe a 20-22 minute written case, so the format may differ by programme or cycle

Stage 5:

Group exercise

about 40 minutes (third-party estimate; not on the official page)

UK: virtual, run by a member of the recruitment team. It assesses collaboration, listening, understanding of the requirements and time management. The group size of about 4-6 and the 40-minute length (10 minutes individual review, 25 minutes group discussion, 5 minutes presentation) come from prep sites, not the official page. In Australia the group activity is part of the half-day assessment centre.

Stage 6:

Final round: experience day or assessment centre with service-line interview

varies; the UK experience day has no stated length (a prep site's sample schedule runs about 08:45 to 13:00); third-party estimates put the interview at 30-60 minutes; the Australian assessment centre is half a day

UK: in person at the London office (with extra Manchester dates for school leavers based in the North). The day includes talks from senior leaders and a final interview with senior people from your service line, covering what motivates you, why you want to join and the skills you would bring. An individual coaching call comes first, and the firm says the conversation will not always follow a set format. Australia: a half-day centre with a group activity, an individual activity, a service-line interview and a Q&A with graduates, held in person, virtually or hybrid. Greece: the current careers FAQ lists an in-person or virtual interview with relevant team members; an older page said interviews could include service-line partners, team members and People and Culture.

Stage 7:

Decision, offer and feedback

about 29 days end to end on average (Glassdoor, UK Graduate Trainee Audit, 21 reports)

Your recruiter follows up after the final round, and the UK firm promises detailed feedback whatever the outcome. Candidates report feedback even after failing an early stage (March 2024 review) and several training calls plus post-interview feedback (December 2023 review). One March 2024 UK candidate reported a 4-week process. Across all UK roles Glassdoor shows a 35-day average. Greece: the careers FAQ says to expect to hear back within 2-3 weeks of applying, varying by role. The current official UK process has four stages after the application form; earlier UK reports add a fifth (video interview); Australia lists three.

Source: https://www.grantthornton.co.uk/careers/early-careers/employability-hub/skills-we-look-for/, which lists seven competencies (or strengths) and says the firm will look for evidence of them at every stage of the application. The same page says applications are reviewed holistically across more than one assessment, and that strengths, motivations and connection with the firm's values are equally important. The UK values page (https://www.grantthornton.co.uk/en/about-us/leadership-and-governance/culture-and-values) lists three values, Purposefully driven, Actively curious and Candid but kind, which it says set the parameters of how people are expected to behave.

The UK early-careers FAQ (https://www.grantthornton.co.uk/careers/early-careers/faqs/) says candidates are assessed on behaviours across several assessments and that the firm looks for people who connect with its brand, values and culture, and the official UK interview guide tells candidates to think about the firm's values and how they have shown them. This is a published list of competencies, not a scoring rubric or pass mark, and it comes from the UK early-careers pages only.

The global network and other member firms (for example https://www.grantthornton.global/en/Careers/the-grant-thornton-difference/values/ and the Belgian careers page) publish the six CLEARR values (Collaboration, Leadership, Excellence, Agility, Respect, Responsibility). Several prep guides, including US-focused ones, still tell candidates to prepare against CLEARR, so check which set your member firm uses.
