01 / For every FTI Consulting candidate

The process, start to finish.

FTI Consulting is a global business advisory firm with five segments: Corporate Finance and Restructuring (CF&R), Forensic and Litigation Consulting, Economic Consulting (called Economic and Financial Consulting in UK recruiting), Technology and Strategic Communications. It is best known for CF&R. This playbook covers the student and early-career track (internships, graduate and entry-level roles), using CF&R as the main reference point because it accounts for the largest share of the public candidate reports found.

Candidates generally apply to a specific practice or career area, and FTI advises reading the practice job descriptions to pick the best fit. Per FTI's own careers page, the process varies by country, region and hiring team. Its published general outline is: a pre-recorded video interview, online assessments (numerical and written abilities), then virtual or in-person interviews that may include a technical interview, a behavioral interview, a case study and a group exercise.

A UK path described by FTI recruiters puts the online assessments before a first-stage interview, so the order varies by region. In 2025-2026 US intern reports on Wall Street Oasis, the usual sequence is a HireVue with about two questions (why FTI, a team experience or tell me about yourself), then one first-round interview of about 30 minutes, often with a senior director or SMD, then a superday of 3 to 4 back-to-back interviews of about 30 minutes with directors and SMDs.

This rests on a handful of reports. Superdays are mostly behavioral but often include light technicals such as accounting flows, liquidity or capital structure. Some practices add a case study. Economic Consulting reports describe a shorter final round. In the UK, the final stage is an assessment centre, which for economic and financial consulting roles includes a group exercise and a case-study interview (per an FTI-sponsored TargetJobs article from 2023).

Glassdoor puts the average hiring time at about 30 days across all job titles and levels, and WSO intern reports range from under 1 month to 1-2 months. FTI does not publish a formal interview scoring rubric. Its careers page says the behavioral interview focuses on how past experiences align with its values, and it publishes five values (Integrity, Creativity, Achievement, Respect, Empathy, spelling I CARE). Those values are treated as the framework below.

FTI also asks candidates not to use AI tools during the application and interview process, and its Gradcracker employer hub says suspected AI use during an interview may lead to disqualification.

Stage 1:

Online application to a specific practice

varies

Apply through the global careers site (Early Talent hire type) to a role in a specific practice. FTI advises reading the job descriptions to pick the career area that fits best. In the UK path, some segments send application questions along with the online assessment invite, and Glassdoor graduates describe them as motivational. Response time varies by practice, office and season. Two US intern reports say attending FTI's IMPACT early-access program gave them priority.

Stage 2:

Pre-recorded video interview (HireVue)

about 2 questions; 30-60 seconds to prepare and 2-3 minutes to answer each, per one guide

FTI's outline lists a pre-recorded video interview that assesses communication skills and motivation; it does not name the vendor, and candidate reports call it HireVue. WSO reports describe two questions, typically why FTI plus a team experience, tell me about yourself, or why restructuring. Not every office or segment uses it: the UK path described by FTI recruiters in TargetJobs has a live telephone or video first-stage interview instead, which some segments skip.

Stage 3:

Online assessments

often 20-30 minutes, per one guide; varies by role

FTI describes assessments of role-relevant skills, such as numerical and written abilities. UK sources describe verbal, logical and numerical reasoning tests, with a technical test for Technology and a written assessment for Strategic Communications. In the UK path described by FTI recruiters these come before the first-stage interview, whereas FTI's global outline lists the video interview first. Use varies by office and practice. The US WSO reports mostly do not describe this stage, though a few tag a personality test or skills test without saying what it was.

Stage 4:

First-round interview

about 30 minutes (one older forum report: 45 minutes)

In CF&R and similar practices it is usually virtual and one-on-one with a senior director or SMD. Two Economic Consulting reports describe two interviewers instead (an analyst or senior analyst with a manager, or two senior consultants). It is mostly behavioral: tell me about yourself, why FTI, why this practice, resume walk-through. Two restructuring reports mention an unexpected easy technical, such as liquidity management. Two reports mention time for the candidate's questions: about 10 minutes at the end of a 30-minute Teams slot, and, in an older forum thread about Economic Consulting, whatever remained of a 45-minute slot after 15 to 20 minutes of behavioral questions. Time to the superday varies in reports: right after, about one week, about two weeks.

Stage 5:

Superday / final round (US)

3-4 back-to-back interviews of about 30 minutes each in CF&R-type reports

Interviewers are directors, senior directors and SMDs. Content is mostly behavioral, with some technicals: three-statement mechanics, bad debt, debt financing and write-downs, cap tables and liens. Two reports (an OCFO intern and a Data and Analytics intern) add a case study handed out on the day with no advance information. Economic Consulting reports describe a shorter final round, such as one 30-minute round with two managers or directors, rather than 3 to 4 back-to-back interviews. Two prep guides say 3 to 6 interviews, and two prep guides mention possible networking with FTI staff or an informal lunch; no candidate report in these sources confirms the lunch.

Stage 6:

Assessment centre (UK)

varies

Described as the final stage of the UK path, usually at a London office. It includes a second and possibly a third interview with senior segment members, plus segment-specific exercises. For economic and financial consulting: a group exercise and a case-study interview. For strategic communications: a group exercise and another written assessment. One London report describes a group case study, one interview with two junior staff, one with a director or partner, and a market-sizing question. The TargetJobs article is an FTI advertising feature from 2023. Length varies by segment.

Stage 7:

Offer

about 30 days end to end on average (Glassdoor, all job titles); reports range from under 1 month to 1-2 months

Glassdoor's company average across about 1,400 submissions is roughly 30 days, covering all job titles and levels, with large spread by role. Senior and lateral roles can take much longer. WSO intern reports cluster at under 1 month to 1-2 months. One guide says a few weeks to a couple of months.

    Integrity

  2. 02

    Creativity

  3. 03

    Achievement

  4. 04

    Respect

  5. 05

    Empathy

These are FTI's published common values from the Culture and Values section of its careers site (five values, initials spelling I CARE). They are not published as a scoring rubric. FTI's early-careers hiring page says the behavioral interview "focuses on past experiences and how they align with our values," and tells candidates to research its mission and values.

An FTI recruiter quoted by Bright Network and TargetJobs says interviewers have been known to ask students whether they know the values, and that the values are in the back of the team's minds when deciding who to hire. No public source maps specific interview questions to specific values, so no question below is mapped to a value.
