01 / For every Flow Traders candidate

The process, start to finish.

Flow Traders is a market maker and liquidity provider founded in Amsterdam in 2004; Flow's own site describes it as a liquidity provider that trades ETPs among other products, and candidate reports describe ETFs and market making as its core business. This playbook covers the Graduate Trader track, the role the firm is best known for hiring into.

Technology hiring (HackerRank test, codepair session, Team Lead interview) is separate and only mentioned; its final interview is described as checking alignment with company values, but the trader track is not described that way. Flow's graduates page lists five official steps for Graduate Trader: (1) CV and cover letter; (2) a numerical test of mental math and sequences; (3) a recruiter interview on business knowledge, motivation and cultural fit; (4) a trader interview on business knowledge, problem-solving and brainteasers; and (5) a case study led by two senior traders that tests trading intuition, decision-making and adaptability.

That page gives no durations and does not say which interviews are remote or in person; Flow's careers FAQ says candidates are required to visit an office during recruitment but does not name the stage. Three New York Graduate Trader job ads posted in February and March 2023 give a different five-step outline: a resume and motivation letter, an online behavioral traits assessment, a mental math test, motivational interviews with HR and Trading, and a final case study run by senior traders.

They say the whole process can take 3-4 weeks. On Wall Street Oasis, ten candidate reports from 2023 to 2026 are readable (the page lists 14 submissions). Only two are labeled Graduate Trader (both Amsterdam: under one month in February 2025, 1-2 months in May 2026). The other eight are labeled internship or similar programs, so their stage details are treated as indicative, not as proof of the Graduate Trader process.

Hong Kong may add a group interview (one 2023 internship report). Candidates repeatedly say ETF and market-making questions come up as early as the recruiter call, not only in the final case. Flow publishes no evaluation framework. Its careers page lists four company values, but it does not say they are used to assess trading candidates, so they are not treated as a framework here. Graduate Trader is open only to penultimate- and final-year students. It runs on a rolling basis with four intakes per year.

Stage 1:

Application (CV and cover or motivation letter)

varies

Official step 1: submit a CV and cover letter. Graduate Trader applications are rolling with four intakes per year, so the wait after applying depends on the intake. The 2023 New York ads ask for a resume and a motivation letter that answers why the applicant wants a career in trading.

Stage 2:

Online behavioral traits assessment

varies

Listed as step 2 of the five-step outline on three New York Graduate Trader ads posted in February and March 2023. It is not on the global graduates page and no length is stated, so the duration is shown as varies. None of the 2024-2026 New York candidate reports on Wall Street Oasis mention it (they describe an online assessment of mental math and sequences), so whether it is still used is unconfirmed.

Office-specific; seen only on 2023 New York ads

Stage 3:

Numerical test (mental math and sequences)

about 8 minutes for mental math plus about 25-26 minutes for sequences (candidate and prep-site figures, not official)

Official step 2. The graduates page calls the test a key part of the process and links to tradinginterview.com for more, but it states no question counts or time limits. A February 2025 Amsterdam Graduate Trader report gives 80 multiple-choice mental math questions in 8 minutes and 26 sequence questions in 26 minutes. A September 2024 Amsterdam internship report mentions a supervised 8-minute math test, and a September 2024 New York internship report mentions an 80% accuracy minimum. On tradinginterview.com the page body gives 60 math questions in 6 minutes (its page description says 8 minutes) and 26 sequences in 25 minutes, with a point lost for each wrong answer. Tradermath lists a 60-question math practice test and 26 sequences in 25 minutes and does not state a penalty. The prep-site figures are not official. The 2023 New York ads name only a mental math test.

Stage 4:

Recruiter (HR) interview

varies

Official step 3, assessing business knowledge, motivation and cultural fit. In candidate reports it is usually a phone call. It often includes ETF and market-making basics, quick ETF arithmetic, probability or a brainteaser. One 2024 New York internship candidate called it the hardest round to pass. No source gives a length, so the duration is shown as varies; reported whole-process lengths range from under one month to 1-2 months depending on the candidate and office.

Stage 5:

Group interview (Hong Kong office)

varies

One 2023 Hong Kong (Causeway Bay) report, tagged as a trading internship, describes a group interview with brainteasers and finance questions before a superday with a behavioral round and a technical round. No other source mentions a group interview, so treat it as office-specific and unconfirmed for Graduate Trader. No length is stated.

Office-specific; single candidate report (internship-tagged)

Stage 6:

Trader (technical) interview

varies

Official step 4, testing business knowledge, problem-solving and brainteasers. Candidates report ETF pricing, currency pairs and market-making games in the technical round (two September 2024 internship reports, Amsterdam and New York). The Amsterdam report describes a phone interview with a current trader; the New York report describes a technical round with traders before an on-site superday; the 2023 Hong Kong report puts the technical round inside a superday. Poker-odds and brainteaser questions are also reported in some New York recruiter-led rounds. The number of rounds reported varies from report to report, and the 2023 New York ads combine the recruiter and trader interviews into one step called motivational interviews with HR and Trading. No length is stated.

Stage 7:

Final case study with two senior traders

varies

Official step 5, testing trading intuition, decision-making and adaptability, led by two senior traders. A forum commenter around 2017, writing as a question and not a first-hand account, says it seems to be 45 minutes of preparation and then about 2 hours of evaluation with a head trader and a senior trader; that thread concerns an older junior trader process and may be out of date. The thread's original poster (a 2016 junior trader applicant) says the case is about hedging one ETF with another and spotting mispricings. A September 2024 Amsterdam internship candidate says the case was held in the office and included making a market, with more preparation time than the technical round.
