01 / For every DRW candidate

The process, start to finish.

DRW is a Chicago-headquartered trading firm founded in 1992 by Don Wilson. It hires traders, quantitative researchers and software developers, and this playbook covers the track it is best known for, the Quantitative Trading Analyst (QTA) trading path, with notes where the developer and researcher tracks differ.

DRW's own graduate page describes four steps: an application reviewed on a rolling basis, a timed at-home technical challenge (a probability and logic challenge for traders and researchers, a computer science coding challenge for software roles), a Zoom or phone interview with a developer, quantitative trader or researcher mixing technical and behavioral questions, and a final round that DRW describes as two days.

DRW says the phone interview runs about 45 minutes and that the final round opens on a day-one afternoon with introductions and a technical challenge, followed by a full day of technical and behavioral interviews. Third-party guides and candidate reports add that the trader final round (Superday) includes a Python data challenge, a trading or market-making simulation and several back-to-back technical interviews, and that some candidates also get a recruiter or HR screen.

Content centers on probability, expected value, mental math, brainteasers, market-making games and, especially in recent London reports, options pricing intuition. DRW does not publish an evaluation framework, rubric or list of principles for interviews; its graduate page only names the areas tested (probability and logic, computer science fundamentals, technical and behavioral questions).

Its careers page does list seven company principles (Integrity, Critical thought, Learning, Challenge consensus, Preparation, Respect, Sense of urgency) but does not say they are used to assess interview candidates, so no framework is included here. DRW also says its recruitment process may be slightly different for some candidates.

Stage 1:

Application

varies

Resume application reviewed on a rolling basis; DRW recommends applying early and says its teams use the resume as a reference throughout the recruitment process and draw interview questions directly from it. DRW states no response time, so how long it takes depends on when you apply and is not published.

Stage 2:

Timed at-home technical challenge (online assessment)

about 45 minutes for trading/research (candidate reports); about 90 to 150 minutes for software developers (candidate reports)

DRW describes a timed challenge taken at home: a quantitative challenge on probability and logic for trader and researcher roles, or a coding challenge on computer science fundamentals for software roles. DRW publishes no time limit and says the invitation email states the length; for software roles it links a sample Codility test. Candidate reports and prep sites say roughly six math and probability questions in 45 minutes for traders and researchers, and three Codility problems in about 150 minutes for software developers (one guide reports two HackerRank problems in about 90 minutes). TraderMath says limits vary and its own 45 minute figure is for its practice mock, not the real test. One September 2026 new-grad researcher report says the link expired seven days after the invitation.

Stage 3:

Recruiter or HR screen (not universal)

varies

Some candidates describe a recruiter or HR screen, sometimes semi-technical with a quick probability or mental-math warm-up. DRW's own steps do not list it. Reports disagree on where it sits: after the online assessment in two London quantitative analyst reports, and before it (a recruiter call, then the math test, then an HR screen) in a third. No report states a duration, and the detailed reports are all from London candidates.

Stage 4:

Zoom or phone technical interview

about 45 minutes

With a developer, quantitative trader or researcher. Mix of technical and behavioral questions; covers everything on the resume, mental math and, for trading, live probability and statistics problems where one guide says answers are expected out loud and quickly. Software candidates should have a computer ready for coding; one guide reports one or two live coding sessions of 45 to 60 minutes. DRW asks candidates to offer at least three weekday slots between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. local time, and says afternoons suit QTA teams better. Third-party guides give lengths from 30 to 60 minutes, and one lists separate 45 to 60 minute probability and market-making video rounds, whereas DRW lists a single Zoom interview.

Stage 5:

Final round (Superday), two days

two days (DRW); third-party guides report 4-6 sessions of about 45 minutes each

DRW: day one starts in the afternoon with introductions and a technical challenge; day two is a full day of technical and behavioral interviews, possibly back to back, with time to network. DRW describes the round as a visit and says its on-site interviews are mostly technical. For traders, guides describe a Python coding/data challenge, a trading or market-making simulation and multiple technical interviews with traders from different teams. The number of interviews is not published by DRW and varies by team; some guides describe a half-day or multi-hour Superday, which does not match DRW's full second day, and some say it can be virtual while TraderMath describes it as in person at a DRW office.

Stage 6:

Decision

1-2 weeks (third-party reports)

Third-party guides report an offer decision typically within one to two weeks after the final round. DRW does not state a timeline.

  1. Sample question, Probability and Expected Value

You roll two fair six-sided dice. What is the probability that their sum is at least 9?

Tests counting favorable outcomes among the 36 equally likely dice pairs.

  2. Sample question, Market Making, Options and Markets

Quote a two-sided market on an unknown quantity, such as an integer sealed in an envelope, the number of countries in Africa or the population of a random city.

Tests setting a fair value and bid-ask width under uncertainty and updating quotes as information arrives.

  3. Sample question, Behavioral and Fit

Tell me about a time you strongly disagreed with a senior team member. How did you handle it?
