01 / For every BDO candidate
The process, start to finish.
BDO is a global accounting network with audit/assurance, tax and advisory business lines. This playbook covers the early careers (graduate, school leaver, intern and industrial placement) entry route into Audit, Tax and Advisory, which is the best documented track. Most of the detail comes from BDO UK, whose official careers site sets out four steps: online application, an online task-based assessment (puzzle-style tasks that BDO says are based on quantitative and inductive reasoning), a timed video interview with scenario-based questions, and a virtual assessment centre with a case study presentation and a group exercise.
Graduates and school leavers then have a face-to-face final interview at the office they applied to. Interns and industrial placement candidates have their interview as part of the assessment centre, at the end of it, instead. Other member firms run similar but different funnels. BDO Australia uses an application review, a 3 to 5 question video interview, then an assessment centre or individual interview, with an outcome 2 to 3 days later.
BDO New Zealand lists a video interview, online testing, an office visit, a one-on-one behavioural interview, a reference check and an offer. BDO UK publishes a competency framework called 'Skills for Success' with four items, and its interview tips page asks candidates to link answers to four values (Being Responsible, Being Bold, Being Collaborative, Being Genuine).
BDO USA's careers pages publish five values but no interview stages or assessment criteria, and no official BDO Canada process page was found, so US and Canadian processes are not covered. Reported US formats on Glassdoor and Indeed could not be accessed and were not used.
Stage 1: Online application
About 1 hour to complete the form (WikiJob)
BDO UK's recruitment page describes the application as short and simple, and as quick and easy as possible for applicants. WikiJob says the form takes about an hour and asks about academic background, work experience and extra-curricular activities. It can be saved as a draft but not amended after you submit. BDO UK's FAQs say most applications open in late September and closing dates vary by programme. No source gives a time to hear back after applying. BDO Australia advises applying early because roles fill quickly.
Stage 2: Online task-based assessment
varies
BDO UK describes puzzle-style tasks measuring cognitive ability, resilience and decision-making, and says the tasks are based on quantitative and inductive reasoning. It says no preparation is needed and AI tools must not be used to complete them. The tips page says a practice question is available, progress saves automatically if you are interrupted, and you get personalised feedback afterwards. The FAQs say some online elements are timed. Practice Aptitude Tests says the platform is Amberjack. No official source gives a duration, and the format varies by member firm and by source. WikiJob (June 2025) names numerical and critical reasoning tests, TargetJobs (April 2025) names numerical and verbal tests, and Graduatesfirst names numerical, verbal and situational strength questions in game-style tasks; all of these differ from the current official wording. BDO New Zealand lists its online tests after the video interview and says they may include verbal, numerical and logical or abstract reasoning, varying by location.
Stage 3: Video interview (recorded)
varies
BDO UK says questions are scenario-based and assess communication, awareness of the business stream you applied to, and fit with BDO's values. Its FAQs say the video interview is timed, and there is a practice question first. No official source gives the number of UK questions or the total time, and the figures vary by member firm. Intervyo (a coaching site) says the UK version has 4 to 5 questions with up to 2 minutes to record each answer, unlimited unrecorded practice, and no retakes of the real answers. BDO Australia says 3 to 5 questions. BDO New Zealand says three questions taking about 5 minutes.
Stage 4: Virtual assessment centre: case study presentation and group exercise
Full day (third-party reports)
BDO UK lists two parts. In the case study you analyse information and present recommendations to assessors. In the group exercise you analyse a business problem as a team and present recommendations. For summer internship and industrial placement roles, BDO's FAQs call it a continuous assessment with key objectives to achieve by the end of the day, with a separate interview at the end. WikiJob (updated June 2025) describes a full-day format with up to ten candidates that differs from the current official order: 15 minutes reading plus 45 minutes of group discussion, a 20-minute individual presentation followed by assessor questions, lunch with trainees, a partner interview and a written exercise. Graduatesfirst calls it an all-day virtual exercise. No official duration is given, and exercise timings may differ by year and office.
Stage 5: Final interview (face to face at the applied office, graduates and school leavers)
varies
BDO UK describes a conversation with senior staff about motivation, decision-making, learning agility and potential, with time for your own questions. Graduatesfirst calls it competency-based, covering role-specific skills, motivations and strengths, and Practice Aptitude Tests describes a competency-based interview on motivation and strengths. No official source gives a duration or names the interviewer, and reports vary by source, office and year. WikiJob describes an interview of about 50 minutes with a BDO partner, including about eight competency questions, but places it inside its full-day assessment centre format rather than as a separate office interview, so that timing may not apply to the office interview.
Stage 6: Outcome
2 to 3 days (BDO Australia); varies elsewhere
BDO Australia says candidates hear back 2 to 3 days after the assessment centre or interview. BDO UK's FAQs say successful candidates are told by phone call from the Early Careers team and give no timing. BDO New Zealand runs one reference check, then makes a verbal offer by phone followed by official offer documents, with no timing stated.
Timing is documented only for BDO Australia
02 / What BDO scores
Skills for Success
01
Leading Self & Others
02
Driving Growth
03
Harnessing Business Thinking
04
Activating Innovation & Change
BDO UK's early careers recruitment page lists these four 'Skills for Success' under the heading 'What do you need to demonstrate?' and says they sit alongside the technical knowledge you gain in your stream. It also says the role of the assessment process is to identify whether you have the mindset for BDO to support your career growth. It does not say which stage tests which skill.
Descriptions, paraphrased: Leading Self & Others means understanding yourself and your impact on others, and creating the conditions for others to grow and perform well. Driving Growth means building strong relationships, communicating with impact and creating value for clients, colleagues and the firm. Harnessing Business Thinking means applying commercial insight, professional judgement and high standards to make sound decisions and produce high-quality work.

Activating Innovation & Change means embracing new thinking, technology and insight to solve problems, improve how the firm works and adapt to change with confidence. Separately, BDO UK's interview hints page tells candidates to link answers to its values: Being Responsible, Being Bold, Being Collaborative and Being Genuine. This framework is published by BDO UK only. BDO USA's careers pages list five values (Caring, Curious, Collaborative, Candid, Committed) but no assessment criteria. Australia, New Zealand and Canada pages were not found to publish a framework.
