01 / For every AQR Capital candidate

The process, start to finish.

AQR Capital Management is a systematic, factor-based investment manager in Greenwich, CT. Its Greenwich internship page lists five tracks: Research and Portfolio Management; Portfolio Implementation, Trading, and Portfolio Finance; Business Development; Engineering; and Risk. This playbook covers the research track (Research Summer Analyst, Research Analyst, Quant Researcher), which is the track AQR is best known for. Software engineering details are mentioned only where they shape the online assessment. AQR's own pages say little about the process.

The Greenwich internship page gives an application window of June 30 to mid-August with interviews throughout September, without naming a year. The India page describes applying through campus placement, then an online test and interviews. Everything else comes from prep sites and a few candidate posts.

They describe broadly similar stages (an online test or assessment, a recruiter or phone screen, one or two technical screens, then a superday with several back-to-back interviews, sometimes with short written tests), but no single source lists every stage, and they disagree on round counts and durations. Two of the prep sites (techinterview.org and extern.com) give near-identical stage figures and should be read as one source, not two.

QuantVault supplies most of the question wording, as titles rather than word-for-word questions. The technical content centers on regression and OLS theory, probability and statistics, portfolio and factor finance, and Python coding. AQR publishes no evaluation framework or competency list. Its careers page and job postings describe only general traits: intellectual curiosity, problem-solving and quantitative skills, communication, attention to detail and collaboration.

This playbook does not draw on firsthand candidate review sites (Glassdoor, Wall Street Oasis), so the evidence base is limited.

Stage 1:

Application (careers portal or campus placement)

Greenwich internships: application window June 30 to mid-August; interviews throughout September

AQR's Greenwich internship page gives this window for summer internships and does not name a year. In India, students apply through their university placement center, and the Bangalore internship runs eight weeks from May to July. The full-time Research Analyst posting (posted November 2025, for 2026 graduates) places hires in the Global Stock Selection team or one of the Macro teams.

Stage 2:

Online test / coding assessment

varies; 75-90 minutes for the coding OA per one prep site

AQR's India page names an online test before interviews but gives no format. Blind posts (2018 to 2023) mention a CodeSignal assessment, mostly for software and research-development roles, and one Blind commenter replying to a post about the CodeSignal round says the questions were basic LeetCode medium without naming the role. QuantVault describes a 75-90 minute, 3-problem CodeSignal or HackerRank coding OA, labeled for the software and quant developer track, and sometimes a recruiter-sent math take-home of about 8 GRE-level multiple-choice questions plus 2 bonus questions instead, labeled for the quant researcher track. QuantVault's own research-track path does not list an OA. The format for research candidates varies by team and region.

Use for the Greenwich research track is unconfirmed; the only official mention is the India page

Stage 3:

Recruiter or initial phone screen

about 30 minutes (prep-site reports)

Covers background, motivation and role fit, and per extern.com also AQR's published research and factor-investing literature. The 30-minute figure comes from prep guides, not from AQR, and techinterview.org and extern.com repeat the same figure, so it is effectively one source. Tradermath lists a recruiter and phone screen stage but gives no duration.

Stage 4:

Technical screens (phone or video)

about 1 hour each, 1-2 rounds (prep-site reports)

QuantVault reports two back-to-back rounds of about 1 hour on OLS assumptions, deriving beta, coding a covariance function, outliers and return skewness, hands-on pandas and statsmodels work, plus a deep dive on your own research; it does not say whether they are by phone, video or onsite. Other guides put the screen at 60-90 minutes on probability, statistics and factor methods. PracHub relays a July 2026 Reddit post about virtual research interviews, one associated with machine learning.

Stage 5:

Superday / final round

varies; reported as 4 to 7 interviews of 30-90 minutes, usually described as one day

Reported counts conflict: QuantVault gives 4 sessions of 45 minutes in one place and six 30-minute one-on-ones in another, sometimes with three written exams (finance, math, programming) and a deliberate stress interview; Tradermath says up to six rounds with short timed exams and a paper presentation for PhD candidates; techinterview.org says 5-7 rounds of 60-90 minutes. Content covers statistical inference, finance across asset classes, ML, projects and behavioral questions. The count varies by level and team.

Round counts and durations conflict across prep sites

Stage 6:

Decision and offer

1-3 weeks after the final round (one prep site)

techinterview.org describes a calibration meeting, then an offer in 1-3 weeks. Prep sites put the whole process at 4-8 weeks or 1-2 months from application, and extern.com says offers land in October and November for September interviews. No AQR source states a total.

No official source gives decision timing; prep-site figures conflict

Roles in the full set

Roles are grouped by the category each question fits, not by the source. Switching roles is part of Interview Prep, included with Career. The counts show what each role holds in the full set.

  1. Sample question, Statistics and Regression

Walk through the OLS assumptions. Which ones break in financial data, and how would you diagnose a violation?

Tests classical OLS assumptions and residual diagnostics such as heteroskedasticity, autocorrelation and omitted variables.

  2. Sample question, Probability and Math

X and Y are jointly normal. What is the covariance of X and Y squared?

Tests moments of a bivariate normal using conditional expectation or Isserlis' theorem for Cov(X, Y^2).

  3. Sample question, Research Fit and Behavioral

Walk me through a research project in depth: the hypothesis, the data, the alternatives you rejected, and how you guarded against overfitting.
