01 / For every Alvarez & Marsal candidate

The process, start to finish.

Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) is best known for restructuring, turnaround and performance improvement work, so this playbook covers the restructuring and consulting analyst and associate track. It also notes where the Global Transaction Advisory Group (TAG, accounting and deal diligence) and Private Equity Performance Improvement (PEPI) tracks differ.

The A&M pages that could be checked give only a skeleton: TAG lists apply, review, an initial virtual interview and final in-person interviews, and PEPI lists on-campus events, two interview rounds (on campus or virtual) and an offer. The main alvarezandmarsal.com and careers.alvarezandmarsal.com pages could not be checked, and none of the official pages checked covers the restructuring track or gives durations. Finer detail comes from coaching guides and forum posts, which disagree in places.

Those sources describe a resume screen first, then in some offices an online numerical and verbal test and a recruiter screen (Road to Offer says campus recruiting skips or sometimes skips the recruiter screen). The first round is described as behavioral-heavy and focused on fit and motivation (why restructuring, why A&M), although Extern says each first-round session also includes a candidate-led case. A final round or Super Day follows with several interviews, and some offices add senior partner conversations.

Extern's FAQ counts two to three rounds, including the recruiter screen; Road to Offer says round count varies by office and role. Restructuring and PEPI roles may add a financial modeling test, with a 13-week cash flow model as the usual example; guides differ on whether it is a take-home or a timed exercise and where it falls in the process. Restructuring cases are finance-heavy and start from liquidity and cash runway rather than growth strategy.

Formats vary noticeably by practice and office: one 2020 Dubai coach describes a practical case presented in PowerPoint, and a 2018 forum post describes a written case presentation for the corporate performance improvement team. No interview evaluation framework is published on the A&M pages that could be checked, so none is given here. A&M's TAG page lists core values and its PEPI page lists candidate traits, but neither says they are used to score interviews.

Public, firm-specific question data is thin: Glassdoor, Wall Street Oasis, Fishbowl and several coaching sites could not be checked, so most sample questions come from editorial practice sets (some with generic wording that is not specific to A&M) and coaching guides, not verified candidate reports.

Stage 1:

Application and resume screen

varies

You apply online for a specific practice and office, and Extern says applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. TAG campus candidates apply to their top-choice city, and the TAG recruiting team reviews applications (official TAG page). The official PEPI campus page starts with on-campus events, info sessions and coffee chats in fall or spring. Road to Offer says screeners look for analytical signals and quantified impact. Timing varies by practice, office and campus cycle: Road to Offer gives full-time campus recruiting as September to November and summer internships as November to February, while Extern describes target-school recruiting starting around August with a general deadline around mid-November.

Stage 2:

Online assessment

25-40 minutes
Some offices and roles only

Road to Offer lists a numerical and verbal reasoning test of 25-40 minutes, used only in some offices and roles, and says it checks quantitative accuracy under time pressure. The duration comes from that coaching guide only; no A&M page confirms the test or its length.

office-dependent

Stage 3:

Recruiter phone screen

about 30 minutes

Extern describes a call of about 30 minutes covering your resume, why A&M, why this practice area, and basic fit. Road to Offer says campus recruiting skips this step (case interview guide) or sometimes skips it (consulting guide), so it may not apply if you are recruited through campus.

campus candidates may skip

Stage 4:

First round (behavioral-heavy, often virtual)

30-60 minutes per interview

Road to Offer reports 1-2 interviews of 30-60 minutes and Extern reports 2-3 interviews of 45-60 minutes, the latter mostly with consultants or managers. The focus is fit, communication, motivation and ownership stories. Extern says each session also includes one candidate-led case, while Road to Offer says only a short case discussion may come up. TAG campus candidates get an initial virtual interview, and the official PEPI campus page says there are two interview rounds, on campus or virtual, without giving durations. A 2022 report from A&M Germany said HR told the candidate the first interview would be mostly behavioral, with questions on theoretical principles or terms and no case. A 2025 Kuala Lumpur post mentions a video interview but does not say which round it was.

Stage 5:

Financial modeling test (Restructuring and PEPI roles)

varies

Extern says Restructuring and PEPI roles often add a financial modeling test, gives a 13-week cash flow model completed remotely before the Super Day as its example, and says some roles include a take-home modeling exercise before live interviews. Road to Offer instead calls it a timed spreadsheet exercise that may be part of the second round, mainly for Corporate Finance and Restructuring roles in some offices. No source gives a duration, and the format and position in the process vary by practice, office and role, so confirm with your recruiter.

practice-dependent

Stage 6:

Written or practical case presentation (some practices and offices)

varies

Reported only in a few forum threads, and not as a firm statement. In 2018 a candidate for the corporate performance improvement team asked how to prepare for a written case presentation, with two days to prepare. In 2020 one Dubai coach (Luca) described a practical case: candidates gather information by interviewing people between case rounds, then present findings in a PowerPoint deck. In the same threads another coach said the case is sent in advance, to prepare and present with an interviewer-led discussion, and a former consultant said A&M usually provides a written case. Another coach said candidate-led cases are the usual model. The format varies by office, team and level, and the duration is not stated.

office-dependent

Stage 7:

Final round / Super Day

45-60 minutes per interview

Extern describes 2-6 interviews of 45-60 minutes with senior managers, directors or partners, assessing case performance and executive presence. Road to Offer says the number of interviews, format and timing of later rounds vary by office and role and can mix case, behavioral and modeling parts. TAG invites selected candidates to final in-person interviews, and the official PEPI page counts two interview rounds in total. Dubai accounts from 2020 conflict and cover the whole process, not just the last round: one coach expected 4-5 interviews in total, rising from Senior Associate through Manager and Director to Managing Director, with the final MD interview possibly fit-only, while another described four case interviews with consultants, three with directors, and a practical case.

Stage 8:

Senior partner conversations (select offices)

about a half day

Road to Offer lists a half-day Round 3 or Super Day in select offices, with senior partner interviews on commercial judgment, cultural fit and leadership potential, sometimes with a networking lunch or dinner. This appears to be the same final step described above rather than an additional stage, and it applies only to some offices.

office-dependent

Stage 9:

Offer

1-2 weeks after the final round

Road to Offer says offers typically arrive within 1-2 weeks of the final round and that the whole process averages about one month, attributing the one-month figure to A&M's careers page, which could not be checked. Extern cites about 38 days from application to offer, based on Glassdoor data. Extern's FAQ says the process involves two to three rounds, counting the recruiter phone screen; Road to Offer says round count varies by office and role. The official PEPI campus page lists an offer step after the two interview rounds.

A tag is the condition given in brackets in the stage name.
