01 / For every Akuna Capital candidate

The process, start to finish.

Akuna Capital is a Chicago-headquartered proprietary trading firm that specializes in options market making and hires early-career candidates into Trading, Quant, Technology and Operations. Akuna is best known for options trading, so this playbook covers the junior trader / quant trader track. Coding questions for quant and developer candidates are included only where sources report them, and no source describes an Operations interview process. Every source that describes the process is a third-party prep or coaching site.

Candidate reports on Glassdoor, Wall Street Oasis, 1Point3Acres and UNSW careers could not be accessed. Most sources agree on the early core: a HackerRank mental math test (80 questions in 8 minutes) and sequences test (24 questions in 12 minutes), a HackerRank coding test, a VidCruiter letter-betting game with recorded video answers, a technical interview with a trader covering brainteasers, market-making games, probability and basic derivatives, and a final round or Super Day. They do not agree on the total.

TradingInterview lists six rounds, adding a separate behavioral recruitment interview; TraderMath, QuantVault and the TechInterview guide list five stages; Quantt describes four, with a single 60-minute online assessment instead of the 8-minute and 12-minute tests. The order of the recorded behavioral round and the recruitment interview also differs between sources, and it is unclear whether they are the same step.

Akuna's own pages (careers, early careers, internships, life at Akuna, who we are, options market making) do not describe the interview process and do not publish an evaluation framework or scoring rubric. They contain only general messaging such as "Own your impact on day one", culture themes and benefits, and a free Options 101 course, so no framework is listed here.

Stage 1:

Online application

varies

Candidates apply online through Akuna's careers page, which lists roles under Internships, Early Careers and Experienced. No source states how long this stage takes, when application windows open or how soon candidates hear back, so the length varies by career level and is not documented. One OpenQuant interviewee says he applied through the website when the application opened.

Stage 2:

HackerRank online assessment: mental math and sequences

8 minutes (math) + 12 minutes (sequences)

Math test: 80 questions in 8 minutes, about 6 seconds each. Answers are not multiple choice and you click submit to advance, so navigation uses clock time. Sequences test: 24 questions in 12 minutes, covering number, letter and other logical patterns. TradingInterview says you must pass both tests to reach the coding test. Prep sites differ on how much this gate removes: TraderMath says the majority of candidates stop at the two assessment rounds at the front (these tests plus the coding and VidCruiter assessments), and the TechInterview post says the math test knocks out more candidates than any later brainteaser. Neither gives a pass rate. Not every source describes this format: Quantt describes a single 60-minute online assessment of mental maths and probability for trader and research candidates, and the TechInterview guide and QuantVault describe the online assessment without timings.

Stage 3:

HackerRank coding test

varies

Usually 2 to 3 easy-to-medium problems (the TechInterview post names arrays, hash maps, greedy and simulation). TradingInterview and TraderMath give no fixed time limit, so the length varies with the problems drawn and with the track; TraderMath's practice estimates of about 15 and 25 minutes for two reported problems are not official timings. For software engineer candidates, Quantt describes two algorithmic problems in 90 minutes and Codemia describes a 90-minute coding assessment. One OpenQuant interviewee says the coding result decided whether they interviewed as a quant trader or a discretionary trader; this is a single account.

Stage 4:

VidCruiter game and recorded video interview

varies

A letter-betting game on a 13-row table pairing A-M with N-Z. A winner row is drawn at random, and each letter's value depends on its row relative to that row. You pick the signed letter wager with the highest expected payout or give a P/L answer once the winner row is shown. QuantVault reports around 23 timed questions (after two warm-ups on one page), altered boards and memory questions; its two pages disagree on the per-question countdown (20 to 60 seconds on one, 20 to 90 seconds on the other). No source gives a total length, so it varies with the number of questions. TraderMath lists a separate short recorded behavioral round with randomly sampled questions; sources disagree on whether it is part of the same stage.

Stage 5:

Technical phone/video interview with a trader

30-45 minutes

Led by an Akuna trader: brainteasers, expected-value and probability problems, market-making games and basic derivatives. Only two sources give a length for the first interview round: Quantt says a 45-minute virtual call and the TechInterview guide says 30-45 minutes; TradingInterview, TraderMath and the TechInterview post give none. The TechInterview guide lists a further technical interview after it, and QuantVault describes separate 45-60 minute video rounds on probability/mental math and on brainteasers/game theory, so the number of technical rounds may vary by office and year.

Stage 6:

Recruitment (behavioral) interview

varies

Only TradingInterview lists this as a separate round. It describes a behavioral interview on cultural fit, motivation for trading, teamwork and communication, and career goals, and gives no length; its lesson page lists it as Round 5 without describing the format. TraderMath instead places a short recorded behavioral round before the technical phone interview and does not mention a separate recruitment interview, and Quantt, QuantVault and the TechInterview guide do not list one. It is unclear whether these are the same step. No source states a length.

Stage 7:

Final round / Super Day

1-4 hours

In person or by video. One technical half (expected-value games, timed harder problems) and one HR half (motivation, fit, strengths and weaknesses). TradingInterview says 3-4 hours and revisits all earlier elements with deeper HR questions; TraderMath says 1-4 hours. Quantt and the TechInterview Five Rings post describe a Chicago Super Day of 4 to 5 back-to-back 45-minute interviews, a trading game and lunch with the team. The TechInterview guide says the Super Day is on-site in Chicago (or Sydney for Australia hires) or virtual, with multiple back-to-back interviews, lunch with employees and behavioral conversations, but gives no count or length. Format varies by office and year.

Stage 8:

Decision

1-2 weeks

Quantt says offers usually arrive within a week of the Super Day. The TechInterview guide says a decision typically comes within 1-2 weeks after a senior partner review. Codemia gives an overall 3 to 6 week timeline, but only for the software engineer track.
